Know about ganglion cysts?

I have been struggling with a ganglion cyst in my wrist for the last year. I saw a hand specialist, but he's so busy that the pain is gone and my x-rays are clear by the time my appointment rolls around. They cyst is not presenting as a swelling in the wrist, it just hurts like hell whenever I bend the wrist. Any suggestions on how to ease the pain, how to get through my daily activities when I have one, how help it go away faster, and prevent them from coming back?
Just to clarify, there is NO visible swelling or lump in my wrist. The first doctor diagnosed it based on symptoms, and the specialist confirmed the first diagnosis based on symptoms. By the time I get into the specialist, the problem has usually resolved.

I have one on my finger and i was told either steroid injections which only have a 40% thingy or operation (but it would probably grow back) or just leave it..

i have had mine for as long as i can remember - like over 8 years.. some do go away on there own though.

i can't bend my finger totally but it doesnt bother me much other than that..

go to your doctor again and stress how much it is hurting you and request an operation..

Do you actually have a lump there? if not then maybe it is something else?

the hitting it with a book thing - my doctor said it more of a joke than anything so i wouldnt try it if i were you unless you love pain!!!! O.o  (+ info)

A question about Ganglion Cysts...?

Has anyone ever had a ganglion cysts on their wrist? What are you supposed to do about them? Are they supposed to be considered dangerous? What do doctors usually recommend?
----------

I have had one on my wrist for several years now. My doctor said that as long as it does not cause much pain its better to do nothing. Surgery would be the only way to deal with the cyst. My cyst does not bother me much and I also have one on my Achilles tendon. They really seem to have no treatment except surgery . I will not have surgery unless it gets too painful or prevents me from normal range of motion on my hand. I thought it was something due to aging as I am 66 but my doctor said any age may get ganglion cysts.  (+ info)

Is it okay if a ganglion (?sp) cysts bursts on its own?

I had a cyst on my wrist that burst today and was wondering if it was okay. I am still going to go see a doctor about it.

It is absolutely O.K. The so called Ganglion cyst's usual treatment is the spontaneous rupture. Sometimes back it is used to be called "Bible Treatment" because there used to be very large and heavy bible in the Churches. The hand was put in the middle of the book and then the book forcibly shut thus crushing the cyst. Basically gnaglion cyst is collection of excessive synovial fluid caught in the synovial membrane. It is a jelly like material. After rupture it usually disapper and do not recur  (+ info)

Ganglion cysts helppppppppppp ?

Does Ganglion Cyst removal hurt...because I just watched a video and it's really nasty looking? How bad? Can it leave a scar? Is that "bible bashing" method safe to do? How bad does that hurt? I've had it for a year and want it gone now. It's very annoying.
...
----------

I had a very large ganglion cysts surgically removed about 6 years ago. I was put under using general anesthetic, and spent the day in the hospital.

The felt no pain after the ganglion was removed, becuase of the size of the ganglion I have a scar. When the doctor stitched up the incision he use a very cosmetic stitch so that the scar was minimized.

"Bible Bashing" does not work to removed a ganglion cysts - you are basically pushing the ganglion down behind the tendons and you could cause more damage to your body.

You could try draining the ganglion or steroid injections into the ganglion that may get rid of it, stop doing the motion that caused the ganglion grow, or have it surgically removed.

If you get it surgically removed you should be given some type of pain killers to reduce the swelling and pain that may result from the removal.  (+ info)

Excuse me but, that was the dumbest thing you could have done. Had that cyst been tumorous you may have spread it. This, besides the infection therein.

This is one reason I don't recommend a chiropractor, they don't have that much medical training and are good for one thing, massaging the muscles, that's all. They are not doctors.

Go see your primary physician and tell him what happen, he'll most likely take a bunch of X-Rays and MRI's and then operate.  (+ info)

I have a Ganglion cysts in my wrist?

Ok I went to ER 3 months ago after falling and landing on my wrist in a weird position, they did an x-ray which showed no fracture but they thought I had a scaphoid fracture so they made me an appointment at the fracture clinic 3 days later. They did another x-ray 3 days later but of the whole arm and hand-again no fracture but still suspected I had a scaphoid fracture so I was put in a plaster.4 weeks later I had a follow up appointment and more x-rays were taken which showed no fracture but again they thought I had a scaphoid fracture so I was put in another plaster and they made me an appointment to have an MRI.4 weeks later I had another follow up appointment (I hadnt had the MRI yet) and had more x-rays and they showed no fracture but they still thought I had a scaphoid fracture but was given a splint instead to wear.Anyway I had my MRI and had my last appointment yesterday. It turns out I have ganglion cysts in my wrist and they suggested I saw my GP to get referred to a hand surgeon to have them removed.I was just wondering 3 things.
1)Will I have full movement of my wrist after I have them removed?(Obviously after it has healed)
2)Will I need physiotherapy afterwards?
3)Is there anything I can do to prevent them getting worse until I go to doctors?(I'm not able to see the doctor until 2 weeks as I'm on holiday)
I have been told I HAVE to have them removed besides it is limiting how much I can move my right hand (my dominant hand) and I haven't for the past 3 months.I could be waiting for another year before it goes. This is simpler as I plan to study at university next year (I wanted to this year but can't as I wouldn't be able to write my assignments thats how bad it is)
Having the surgery is not the question-the questions are:-
1)Will I get full range of movement after they are removed?
2)Would I need physiotherapy?
My 3rd question has been answered and seems a logical answer since they have got *slightly* better in the past 3 months whilst my wrist was immobilized.

Ganglions will go away on their own if you keep wrist movement to more of a minimum (meaning take a break from video games or playing guitar, or typing a lot, or whatever it is you do). I've heard a remedy for them is to hit it against a desk or hit yourself with a brick. I had them once, but I was too chicken to try, eventually they just went away. I'd do a little reading on them first. try wikipedia.  (+ info)

does heat or ice help ganglion cysts?

I've got a ganglia / gangion cyst on the inside of my wrist & it's been pretty painful lately.

would heat or ice help at all?

(i'm really super busy--just moved to a new town--and i don't have a doctor yet so i can't go & get it aspirated again right away. i just need some immediate pain relief)
thanks a bunch!!!
can't pop it--it's SUPER deep.
could barely aspirate it in the doc's office after it was pierced 5 times with a large gauge needle--the stuff inside is like clear jello! WEIRD!!
i'll get it aspirated again as soon as i find a doctor... but i'm so busy with the move, changing address, unpacking, cleaning, etc, etc... it might not be for another week or so.

Ice helps me more than heat. They used to call them Bible Bumps cause the old timers would smack em with a Bible and burst them.  (+ info)

Ganglion Cysts- To be removed....or not to be removed...?

Heya

Its not a major problem and i am not embarrsed by it and was just wondering has anybody every had one of these? And wether its worth me havin it surgicly removed...like my mum keeps naggin for lol

Thanks for your help
xx

As long as a ganglion cyst isn't causing any problems, then there is no need to have it removed. But that's not true anymore for you, is it? You may not have to have it removed, you may be able to have it aspirated. That means the doctor will insert a needle and sort of suck out the contents of the cyst if he can. Some cysts are fluid filled, and some contain a thicker mucus that won't aspirate. If yours won't aspirate, or it just reappears, then you might consider having it removed. Although they say surgically removed, it isn't to sort of surgery you do in the operating room with you asleep. We do those in a sterile treatment room special for minor procedures just like this. The doctor usually uses a local anesthetic, much like your dentist uses, to deaden the skin around the cyst. Then he makes the incision, removes the cyst, and sews up the incision. You get a bandage and are on your merry way in about an hour or two. You might have to stay off the foot and keep it up for a day or two, and it will be a bit tender for a few weeks. Not anything major though, and you won't need anything stronger than Motrin for that pain. In a lot of cases, that solves your problem for good. Sometimes they will return, but not most of the time. Since yours is causing some pain, it is worth it to have it looked at and decide what to do to change things for you. It's a minor inconvenience, easily fixed- so go ahead and do it. You will be happy you did, and your mom will stop fussing at you. That generally makes it worth doing just for that reason alone.  (+ info)
