Is the surgery done for gastric outlet obstruction is a life risk one?

All surgeries carry inherent risks, including the risk of death. A major surgery should never be approached before comprehensive testing and evaluation are completed. Your age, general health, etc have to be considered. Any chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, need to be optimally controlled prior to surgery. A complete cardiac evaluation should be performed. Above all, your choice of surgeons is probably the most important factor to consider. Do not be afraid to interview doctors. Ask how many successful surgeries of this type he or she has done and ask what type of complications they are equipped to handle.  (+ info)

Can a bezoar or gastric obstruction be diagnosed with abdominal ultrasound?

GI obstruction is usually diagnosed with a CT scan. The sensitivity of abdominal ultrasound is not as good.  (+ info)

i have a bladder outlet obstruction with possible detrusor sphincter dyssynergia. I am unable to empty bladder

I have to go to pass urine several times. never able to empty bladder completely. I have tried alpha blockers but does not seem to work. I am not able to work due to this condition. Can some one suggest any alternative medicine?
i did get the diagnosis from a qualified urologist. he did suggest surgery. but will I not have trouble withholding urine when I get old. I am 27 now.
----------

You got that diagnosis by searching the Net or via a qualified urologist? If it really is detrusor sphincter dyssynergia, what this means is that your detrusor muscles (which contract and relax to allow urination) is not working together all at the same time.

Alpha blockers are mainly to relax the smooth muscles of the sphincter and those surrounding the prostate. If this does not work for you, perhaps surgery is the next best thing.

Do consult a qualified urologist to help you in your problem.

Hope this helps :)  (+ info)

From what percentage of obstruction a heart surgery is recomended?

My father has a 40% obstruction on his right coronary and 50% on his left coronary, and a 80% obstruction on his left marginal. With these levels what is the best approach? Heart surgery, angioplasty or other? Detail: although in good health he is 73 yo.
----------

It is not clear from your answer where the 50% on the left coronory was located....
The reason this is important is that disease in the Left Main or 3 vessel disease (L coronory, R coronory, Circumflex) are the 2 clear cut indications for CABG or coronory artery bypass grafting. Mostly of the other blockages are handled and handled well with Angioplasty with or without stents..
Your cardiologist will look at several different things to decide on the treatment approach including collateral blood flow..pump function of the heart etc..
And by the way some of the answers above are ridiculously flawed...if the lesions are such that your cardiologist suggests CABG then that is what he should have.  (+ info)

What are the symptons of gastric problems and how can this be solved?

My mum is suffering from stomach aches and she has been diagnosed to have gastric problems and I want a solution to her problem.Can some one please help me?
----------

Once the doctor tells you what's causing the stomach aches, ask the doctor what can be done to treat the stomach aches. He may not be sure what is causing them. If they only started recently after she began taking a new medication, maybe the medication is causing the gastric distress. If they only occur at night when she's lying down, maybe it's an "acid reflux" symptom which can be treated. She could try staying on a very bland food diet and if her condition improved, she could tell her doctor so that he would know what the problem is. There are hundreds of gastrointestinal problems that your mother may have, and you need to continue monitoring her symptoms and comparing them to those you can read about on medical websites such as
http://www.webMd.com and http://nihseniorhealth.gov/listoftopics.html
Also, hospitals have telephone assistance for people calling in with medical problems that need help. Ask for the "nurses hot line" or doctor referral information.  (+ info)

What are the downsides to gastric bypass surgery?

specifically what are the nutritional ramifications because I have read that B-vitamins and protein cannot be absorbed because of the portion of small intestine that is bypassed. Also, what happens if there is a pregancy? What happens to a developing fetus if the B-vitamins and protein is not accessible? What are other downsides to gastric bypass surgery? I want to make the best informed decision and I am afraid that I am only hearing of the "up" sides of surgery or at best "sugar coated" negative sides to the surgery. I would like the most information anyone is able to give me! Thank you!
----------

If I was interested in that kind of surgery, I would go to my family doctor. He will be able to answer all your questions. In fact he can refer you to a doctor that can help you. Please, be very careful on deciding to have the surgery and be sure to shop for an absolute, 100% for real doctor that knows his business. I will be anxious for you. And I pray you will make the right decision . Thanks and God Bless.  (+ info)

How much will gastric bypass affect my excess skin?

I am having Gastric bypass in less than a week and i know that I will have excess skin. I will probably have it where my love handles are, a little above the belly button. How much will gastric bypass effect the stretching of my skin? I am only 19 years old and currently weigh 261 pounds. The doctor told me it will not be as bad as an older person, but still i would like to know. Is there a way to get rid of excess skin besides more surgery?
----------

I had bypass at 34 and can tell you that after meeting many people that have also had it, it's a real toss up. I know you would like to know but like you rdoc said - the only known thing is that your young and you still have a lot of snap back left in your skin. But your genetics place a big part as well as how much you loose. Start to exercise as soon as you can and to be safe just have the idea in your head that after you hit goal you MAY be one of those that have to have plastic surgery to get the real look you want. That way you are not disappointed. I need it but I lost a lot more weight and have no more snap back in my skin. Good luck 2 you.  (+ info)

How expensive is the gastric bypass surgery (bariatric) if you don't have health insurance to pay for it?

I am 39 years old and very obese and have diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, and high triglycerides. My doctor at the VA Hospital wants them to give me gastric bypass surgery but they no longer do it at the VA Hospital. Is there any VA Hospitals that perform gastric bypass surgeries (regular one) or how much money do you need to have it done on your own? Please help me. Thank You.
----------

Completely depends on whether the patient has complications. I had it done 3 years ago...absolutely no complications..total cost was about $30,000

Gastric Bypass Surgery Cost & Profile

* Avg. Cost: $25000
* Candidate: BMI of 40 or higher
* Length: 2 hours
* Treatments: One
* Results: Permanent
* Back to work: 3-6 weeks

I paid about $1,500 out of pocket.

Not sure of any VA hospitals that offer the procedure.

Hope this lets you figure out an estimate on the cost.  (+ info)

How do you find out if your insurance will cover gastric bypass surgery?

I am not very proficient in understanding how insurance companies work. I am interested in having gastric bypass surgery. My weight has gotten out of control and I have an appointment with my physician next week. I'm sure she will be able to help, but I want to go in with as much knowledge as I can. Thanks for any answers that you can give me as far as insurance goes and anything about gastric bypass.
----------

Generally speaking, insurance companies do not like to pay for bariatric surgeries, for many reasons:
1. It is much, much healthier if you lose weight the old fashioned way -- diet and exercise.
2. It is much, much cheaper for the insurance company if you lose weight the old fashioned way.
3. If you're not going to diet and exercise after the surgery, you may eventually gain weight back anyway.
4. The surgery often has lots of complications, which cause more health problems.
5. The complications also cost the insurance company more money.

So, yeah, you will have difficulty getting insurance to pay for the surgery, but if you persist, and if your doctor is willing to fight with the insurance company, you may get it paid for.

It is obvious from your well-written question that you are a very intelligent person. Please do a lot of research into this before you have major surgery.
