How does having had a gastric bypass effect pregnancy?

My co-worker just found out she was 3 months pregnant. She had a gastric bypass in september of 06. She wasn't suppose to get pregnant for atleast a year after the surgery. What should she be doing? How does a past gastric bypass effect pregnancy?
She was told that she could not have kids. She hasn't been taking birth control because she has been trying to have kids for all these years and she is now 40. So I guess she thought it didn't make any sense to take birth control since she was told that she can not have kids
----------

It will affect the baby because since the bypass, the mother is not getting the same amounts of nutrients. She will have to be monitored very carefully by her physician to make sure the baby is growing properly. She may have to be on a special diet. It would be wise if she consulted with a dietician.  (+ info)

What are the chances of death and complications of gastric bypass?

What are the chances of death and complications for me getting gastric bypass surgery? I already know I'm getting it and I'm about to go through therapy. Here are some details that might be of help:
• I'm 15.
• I'm 330lbs.
• I'm 6'5".

Please give me an estimate on what my chances of death or major complications are! I really want to know!
----------

The chances of death during gastric bypass surgery are very slim. The procedure is very safe. Every patient is different, so the chances or complications will differ. Much of it will have to do with what shape you are in prior to the surgery. Your doctor will take all of that into consideration and will tell you what complications can arise. At your age they may not even consider the surgery. Your body is going through a lot of changes.

See your doctor and have him/her refer you to a bariatric surgeon. The surgeon will determine if you are a good candidate and will probably put you on a weigh loss program first. The process from the time of your initial consultation and when the surgery takes place can be several months.

I had a gastric bypass three years ago and now head the local support group for weight loss patients. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Can someone suggest suitable food or foodstuff to alleivate gastric pain?

Any other information regarding food to avoid or suggestions to minimise gastric pain will be welcome. Thanks.
----------

Hi,
Gastric pain can mean many things and be caused by many things. You could have an ulcer, acid reflux, constipation, food poisoning or many other things. My first suggestion would be to have a doctor tell you the source of the pain. My next suggestion would be to investigate the many benefits of ionized, alkaline water. This technology has been used in Japan and Korea for over 20 years. They actually use this technology in their hospitals. There is an unpleasant video on the website below that shows how the water helped people with colon problems. I know of people who have cut their acid reflux medicine by 80% by using the water. It is definitely worthwhile to study all of the many uses of both the ionized acid and alkaline water. It helps with many different issues so check it out and form your own opinion. Most importantly, if the pain is always there then you need to have a professional diagnose why! Blockages in the intestine can be life threatening if untreated. Hope all goes well and have a blessed day!  (+ info)

How long can a person live with a bowel obstruction?

My mother-in-law is in the hospital and very sick. She's been there for 5weeks now and they just found out that now she has an obstruction on top of everything else thats wrong with her , and she isn't strong enough to have surgery to remove it.How long can she live with it?They say shes had it for about 3 weeks already.
----------

She must not be completely obstructed if she has had it for 3 weeks. The doctors can probably get it moving without surgery. Either way, pray for her and keep up hope.  (+ info)

how to treat little gastric troubles in the home without seeing doctor?

i have some gastric troubles, because if I eat a little oily, or spicy food, my entire stomach gets completely upset. What home remedies can I take for this, without seeing the doctor, also should I avoid tea and coffee, until this problem gets over? And take only milk?
----------

Greek style yogurt, or just yogurt. There are also other food products like drinkable yogurt and one amazing food item...like Kefir, which is a cousin to yogurt. Some gastric troubles are linked to an imbalance of intestinal bacteria/organisms and you can right the balance by eating some of these cultured foods. You may avoid caffeine drinks, if you can link drinking them and a resulting attack. I also recommend you see your doctor anyway, and get a complete check up on your intestinal troubles to ensure there isn't a larger problem at bay.  (+ info)

What condition results from an obstruction that totally blocks the flow of blood in a coronary artery?

What condition results from an obstruction that totally blocks the flow of blood in a coronary artery?

A. Headache
B. Heart attack
C. Stroke
D. Blindness
----------

Answer is B. Heart attack (Myocardial infarction).
Acute coronary syndromes result from acute obstruction of a coronary artery. Consequences depend on degree and location of obstruction and range from unstable angina to non-ST-segment elevation MI (NSTEMI), ST-segment elevation MI (STEMI), and sudden cardiac death. Symptoms are similar in each of these syndromes (except sudden death) and include chest discomfort with or without dyspnea, nausea, and diaphoresis. Diagnosis is by ECG and the presence or absence of serologic markers. Treatment is antiplatelet drugs, anticoagulants, nitrates, β-blockers, and, for STEMI, emergency reperfusion via fibrinolytic drugs, percutaneous intervention, or, occasionally, coronary artery bypass graft surgery.  (+ info)

Can a woman with a gastric bypass go through a pregnancy?

Gastric bypass restricts the nutritional intake and digestive functions, so my question concerns a woman in her thirties who may be planning future pregnancies.
----------

Of course she can!!!

I am a Gastric Bypass patient. I;m 32. I've lost 140 pounds in 12 months. I had my surgery last year. I know many, many, many women who have had the surgery and then had beautiful healthy babies! The pregnancy is considered high risk but that just means that you have to go to the doctor a little more often and have a few more blood tests. No worries. My husband and I plan on having another child in the next couple years (we had our first child 5 years ago) and I don't expect any issues and my surgeon says that everything should be just fine when the time comes :0)
They do ask that you wait 12 months after the surgery to become pregnant to allow your body to fully eal. I know one woman who got pregnant 6 months out of surgery and one who become pregnant 4 months out of surgery. Both had healthy babies and were able to continue losing weight after the birth.

On a side note..I am so tired of people trying to talk gastric Bypass patients into getting the Lap band. The Lap band is not for everyone. I was offered my choice of surgeries and chose Gastric BYpass. I have never, ever regretted my decision. I've had ZERO complications. I've lost almost all the weight I needed to to in ONE year. The lap band can be removed. Once the band comes off, you can eat and eat and eat and eat. I never wanted to be like that. The bypass restricts what you eat and my nutritionist taught me how to eat properly for the rest of my life. I would never have goten the band. Gastric Bypass saved my life!  (+ info)

What if reflux, vomiting and gastric pain continue despite treatment? What might a gastroenterologist do?

I have been taking Omeprazole and have suffered gastric problems for over 9 weeks and continue to have a problem with reflux and am sometimes actually sick. What can I do? Have I any hope of it healing up as I,m beginning to wonder if it will. Do any doctors know if it will soon get better as I,m fed up of being sick and its ruining my life.
----------

A gastroenterologist will perform EGD - esophagogastroduodenoscopy.
It is a diagnostic endoscopic procedure that visualizes the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract.

Vomiting that does not go away, signs of heartburn (esophagus & gastric pains), GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) are some few indications for doctors to perform EGD.
