I can tell you that it's very difficult to find it online. I did a search for you but failed!
But good news is that you can find it in Williams Hematology . Go to the section Color Atlas XXII: Lymph Node Biopsies and find it there. If it doesn't have a copy right I will copy and paste the image for you. sorry for that and good luck  (+ info)

How can enlarged lymph node removal for microscopic exam aid in diagnosing certain disease?

Can someone please give me the scientific explanation for this question? I know that lymph nodes "take out" cancer cell from the body, so would an enlarged lymph node be examined for abnormal cells? How exactly would disease be detected in a lymph node? Thanks
----------

Actually, I will have to disagree with the other few post and say, yes your lymphatic system does destroy cancer cells every day, according to my anatomy book I read a while ago in college.

A disease would be detected in your lymph nodes if it was inflamed, meaning your lymphatic system is trying to destroy a disease. If a lymph node is hard as a rock, that means a different cancer has effected your lymph nodes. Cancer of the lymph nodes, Lymphoma, is normally firm, not movable and over 1 cm. When a biopsy is done to look at cells, the lab workers will look for fast, weird looking, dividing cells (cancer cells) .  (+ info)

How can cancer spread without lymph node involvment?

My aunts lymph nodes came back clear but they found lesions on her liver she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. They are doing a liver biopsy. We have no idea right now if they r cancer or nothing Iam praying they are nothing. But how can cancer spead without lymph node involvment? Whats the possibilty this is just nothing?
They did blood work came back as non-vascular
----------

I'm curious what you mean by "they did blood work came back as non-vascular." The truth is that all tumors have some vasculature or they wouldn't be able to survive. Tumors feed on the same oxygen and nutrients that the rest of your body feeds on, and more.

As a result, the cancerous cells can enter the blood stream and travel through the body, coming to rest in other locations. The liver is a prime target for these rogue cells because it works like a filter for the blood.

The lymphatic system definitely plays a part, but positive nodes do not always precede distant metastases.  (+ info)

What is the name of the lymph node located behind the ear?

My son has his tonsils out and I have found that since this operation when ever he gets sick that lymph node gets as big as a small apple. Always accompaning this is a very high fever. His Dr. has always acted all stumped and never does more than put him on antibiotics. Since this continues to happen I just wonder if maybe there is more to this lymph node.
----------

If the antibiotics fix the problem, he should be OK. As a mom, stay on top of the docs until you get satisfactory answers. Medicine is not always exact. Don't hesitate to get a second opinion. A red flag would be when antibiotics don't phase the swollen node. I had loads of antibiotics before they knew I had Lymphoma. The mose definitive test would be a biopsy of the swollen node. I'm not a doctor however, and am just talking from my experience.

What does it mean when one lymph node becomes swollen and sore?

My girlfriend's left lymph node recently became swollen and sore. She said it's happened a few times before (every few months or less maybe). A few days ago she had a high fever but it only lasted a night or so. What's going on?

What would be the ramifications of a missing lymph node?

I've recently started retaining lymph in my body and nobody has figured out why. I have to take medication daily - if I miss a single dose I begin to swell. I've recently discovered that I am missing one of the nodes in my neck. Could this be the problem and what are the ramifications of not having that node?
----------

Typically lymphedema occurs when a whole group of lymph nodes are removed. I don’t know how anyone can tell if you have a missing lymph node as there is not a set number in any particular location and there is no way to count them without removing the entire area and plucking them out of the tissue. People have them removed for biopsy all the time with no problems. I hope they find what is causing yours.  (+ info)

How large should a lymph node be before it is considered 'swollen'?

I've got this lymph node under my chin which has been enlarged (or according to me) for a while now. I have severe acne. Is acne a form of skin infection which may cause it to be like that?

It's not the size of a golf ball or a walnut - it's just able to be felt and it hasn't grown either.
----------

Yes severe or cystic acne can cause this nodules under the skin around the neck area. My son who is a cystic acne sufferer has had a few suspicious looking lumps around his neck some of them were actually lymph nodes that were swollen due to the infection of the acne cyst. Do not panic or assume anything just go and see a doctor who will probably give you antibiotics to treat the infection and if the nodes don't go away in time then probably further tests will be needed but I have a strong feeling that it is all related to the acne as I have seen with my son's experience. With cystic acne or any severe acne the best advice I can give you is to eat healthy, drink lots (3litres) of plain water, keep of the sugar and flour staff, eat lots of raw fruits and veggies, exfoliate your skin to try to keep the pores unclogged so bacteria cannot survive (they don't like oxygen) and when you get a pimple as soon as you see it get a cotton wool soak it in hydrogen peroxide and hold it on the pimple for about 10min, the Oxygen in the hydrogen will kill the bacteria do this until the pimple is gone, you can apply some sea salt with water to shrink the lesion and heal quickly, tea tree oil gel applied twice per day will help prevent outbreaks or benzoyl peroxide if you want to use it.

What are the odds that a hard lymph node is serious?

I've had a swollen lymph node on the side of my neck for nearly two years. It's hard, painless and not moveable. When I first noticed it, it was about the size of a grape. It's now probably closer to a ping-pong ball, although it's not on the surface so it's difficult to say for sure (it's right under the corner of my jaw, in my neck).

I've mentioned it to my doctor before and at first she wasn't able to feel it. The last time I saw her, I pointed it out again and she agreed that it was definitely swollen. I have an appointment in a week where I'll be able to discuss it more with her.

Some of the things I've read on the internet are very frightening. Can anyone tell me how likely this is to be serious as compared to an infection or something else? I know only my doctor can answer that for sure, but does anyone have an idea?

Thanks!
Thanks for all the informative answers.

Yunggin, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you're doing ok.

Yeti, I don't know for sure that it's a lymph node. But my doctor (Internal Medicine) felt it and agreed it was a lymph node, so I assume it's the case.

Thanks everyone! I'll post an update if I find out more.
Well, I saw my doctor and all she did was refer me to an ear, nose and throat specialist. I called several different clinics and can't get in for another month. She also noticed that the lymph node on the other side is hard as well, although not as large. I'm really worried about this, but I'm trying to put it out of my mind until I can see someone.
----------

I had a similar experience about 6 years back. Although the chances of cancer are small (unless you have a history in your family), you probably don't want to play around here.

My growth was near the surface of my skin, and got big very quickly. I eventually had surgery, and it just turned out to be a rare bacterial infection that can cause swollen lymph nodes. I'm no doctor, but the chances are that you have something like that in some way. there are lots of strange, rare, and really weird infections that can cause similar symptoms.

The other worry, of course, is lymphoma. It's a really scarey thought, and I think the chances are this is not what's going on, but it's good to have it checked out, and quickly. Given that lymphoma spreads quickly, and is very deadly, it's unlikely you have it, since you've had this thing for a couple years.

Either way, get it biopsied!! Now! If that means they need to do minor surgery, than so be it. It's better to be safe than dead (because you did nothing).  (+ info)

What can cause a breast lymph node to swell?

I recently had a mammogram and they found a swollen lymph node. I then had a sonogram and was told it looked completely benign. They are having me follow up in 3-6 months to just check it again. Should I still be concerned? The doctor seemed very reassuring that it looked benigned but could it eventually turn into something? What could have caused it? I had pink eye just a few days before. Could that have made a lymph node in my breast swollen?
----------

Yes the pink eye could have caused swelling. There could have been a blockage in your lymphatic system. Lymph nodes cannot turn into tumors, so if it was indeed a mass they would have been able to tell right away. The follow up is probably just to make sure that the swelling is going away normally and there is no infection. I would not be overly concerned, just be aware if there are any other changes.  (+ info)
