Life span of a man with malignant glioma?

58 year old man otherwise healthy
----------

A 2004 cancer study by H Lee Moffitt Cancer Centre concluded that median survival rate for patients undergoing no treatment was 12 to 16 weeks. With conventional treatment, rate was 12 to 24 months for patients with favourable prognostic factors, and 6 to 9 months for those with poorer factors.  (+ info)

Optic Glioma Treatment?

My 9 yr old daughter has NF1 and was just diagnosed with an optic glioma. Currently since it is a new growth they are advising rescanning in three months to see how fast growing it is. Anyone that has dealt with this kind of tumor it would be nice to hear a real story instead of medical statistics. Thank you!

my son who is 4 is going through the same thing but it has grown to the point he needs chemo. He is on Carboplatin/Vincistine. He also has NF-1 and a optic glioma. I wish you the best of luck.  (+ info)

if you have had a glioma come back or have info...please help!!?

My father was diagnosed with a grade 2 malignant glioma 4 years ago. (Brain Tumor) We just got results from his last mri today and his tumor and grown back, he is getting brain surgery in 3 weeks so he is being pumped with steroids now. Anyone else go through this and what was the outcome. The dr. doesn't say much excepts he hope its not a grade 3 or 4. They will know the grade when they do the operation. I am trying to find websites or information that tells the outcomes, the chances of survival and how long. I am a realist and need to know what to expect. Also I am pregnant with the first grandchild so I would like to be prepared. Thanks for the comments...

why is he getting steroids the operation is scary i hope you have a good Dr and what are his chances does he have scar tissue? they have something that can schrink the tumor  (+ info)

What happens next? Stage 4 Glioma?

My dad was recently diagnosed with a Stage 4 brain tumor. He's not doing the best right now. Chemo and radiation are not an option. And if anyone doesn't know, it is inoperable. I believe God can heal him, but if he doesn't, I want to know what happens next. What these next couple weeks will be like. If you have ANY information, please answer my question. Thanks, Brittany :)

Hi Brittany,

I will try to give you my experience as a health care provider.

If your dad has Stage 4 brian cancer that is neither operable nor amenable to chemotherapy or radiation, then you are likely aware his prognosis for survival will be very short - measured in weeks, not months.

It is important for family members to remember to take care of yourselves as well as your dad. This can be a very difficult time, and the emotional strains on family members are huge.

Contrary to what the first response to your question, your father should NOT have a lot of pain if his medical caregivers are kept aware and on top of his situation. With medications, patients in the last weeks of their life can almost always be kept reasonably comfortable but should have NO PAIN (unless they choose to tolerate some - which some patients do). Maximizing your father's comfort may involve pain medications (including significant opioids), some relaxing medications (such as benzodiazipines i.e. Ativan) and a few other medications depending upon your dad's symptoms. Make sure that your family and his physicians/nurses are keeping a close eye on how he is doing/feeling.

As things progress, your dad may have physical responses to the end stage, but with adequate medications he should be fairly comfortable. Some of his responses however as well as the final stages of life can be quite emotionally challenging for family members. Family should be encouraged to request supportive care advice if they think that they would benefit from this. Most cancer centres will have some sort of supports for families.

I hope I've helped to answer your questions. If you were looking for more medial or physical info, do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

operated low grade glioma6months latter follow-up shows a cystic lesion mwhat it is?

there is mid-line shift, the lesion is surounded by edema with minimal enhancement.
----------

Mid line shift means that there is a mass lesion (a lump) of some sort. It is not likely to be scarring (which shrinks as it heals). It would be important to consider abscess/infection and tumour recurrence. Good luck!  (+ info)

Anyone aware of new treatments for diffuse pontine glioma?

My 6-year-old niece was diagnosed with this rare brain stem tumor earlier this week. If you are aware of any new treatment options that may offer hope, please advise...and if you aren't, please keep her in your prayers. Thank you.
She was diagnosed at A.I. dupont Children's Hospital in Wilmington, DE and her treatment plan proposed treatment plan (includes temozolomide) is being reviewed by St. Jude's. Thank you for the information.
----------

Sorry to hear about your niece. I have little experience with this type of cancer - my practice is limited to adults. I have some links below with some info about the disease and potential new treatments and clinical trials. Not sure where she is being treated, but hopefully at a large university medical center that does a lot of research. Ask about clinical trials that your niece may be eligible for - they might be her best hope. You may need to travel to get her the treatment she needs. Will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Advice on treatment of brain stem glioma grade 2/3?

Hi I am asking for advice on all patients especially children who have had a brain stem glioma fully encased within the brain stem.

Currently due to have radiation I am exploring the possibility of my son (diagnosed with a brain stem tumour May 2008 he is five years old) of instead having the tumour resected under Dr Teo.

His prognosis is that he will die in a year or two with no treatment and possibly even after radiation. Surgery is only being offered by Dr Teo. there is an 80% chance of success. Really only numbers I think.

Can any one out there share their experiences of a similar tumour type and situation and their outcomes? Unsure of what to do for his best outcome and quality of life.

Thanks,

Sandra

Dr Charlie Teo?

You have a no win situation as far as being able to make an easy decision.

Supposing Dr Teo is able to remove 95% of the tumor. Would your son be able to have radiation on any remaining tumor after healing from the surgery?

I do not have any suggestions. You have met Dr Teo. If you feel comfortable with Dr Teo's care I might think long and hard about your son having the surgery.

Whatever you decide - all the best to you and your family.   (+ info)
