Can anyone tell me about the research and development for this disease? Are there any useful websites? Are there any patient research centers for this disease?

Is a brain stem glioma a common tumor in 13 year old males (PLEASE READ I'M REALLY SCARED!)? (best ans 10 pts)?

I'm 13 years old and a male and I would like to know if a brain stem glioma is common in children of this age, I'm scared that I have one, my symptoms are mild, haven't vomited once, headaches are mild, sometimes worse when bending over, occasional double vision (I think it's caused by eye strain because I use my laptop all day), blurry vision a fair bit (eye strain, I think), mental decline (mild) (I think it's because of severe anxiety), the mental decline is like me saying the wrong words, writing the wrong words and having less concentration.

I also get ringing in my ears lasting about 1-3 seconds, but this happens very rarely.

My headaches are strange and I think they are controlled by my moods, they are barely ever in the morning (if ever) and I barely ever feel sick in the morning, the sickness and headaches are just mild and on and off throughought the day and just recently I noticed that the headache is slightly worse (still mild) when bending over, coughing, sneezing and stuff like that.

I mainly get the ringing in my ears when it's quite.

I also get tingling in my legs, arms and other parts of my body, but no numbness.

I recently started getting this tingling near the tip of my finger to the left of my pinkie on my left hand.

Please don't say "See a doctor so he can do a scan on your brain" because I would mainly like to know if a brainstem glioma is common in 13 year olds, but could you maybe also tell me if my symptoms sound like a brain tumor please?

I also have had recent memory problems and forgotten stuff and had trouble concentrating but my long term is still normal and perfect.

I used to have Burkitts Non Hodgkins Lyphoma when I was 4 (I'm 13 now, as I said in the main part of the question) and my cousin died of a brain tumor when he was 14, I also have worried about 5 other different diseases in the past couple months.

What do you think?
----------

The most common brain tumour in children is a medulloblastoma but glioma are found in children and account for about 8% of childhood malignancies.

The symptoms you mention are very general and not really indicative of glioma, which has symptoms such as Headaches
Nausea
Vomiting
Drowsiness
Seizures
Changes in personality
Memory loss
Changes in speech
Weakness or loss of feeling in limbs
Walking difficulties
Vision changes
Abnormal eye movements.

I doubt you have cancer of any kind from what you have said :)  (+ info)

new to nursing care plans - what is more important no bowel movement for 3 days and pt hasnt eaten in 3 days?

This is my first practice nurse care plan and our group decided that Eating was more important to deal with first. A little background on example pt. The woman is surg post op 6 weeks for glioma. She is 57 yrs of age and has lost 7 lbs in 6 weeks. She is not interested in eating and is wearing a wig. She is not responding to laxatives. Do you think dealing with the eating problem is more important than constipation?
----------

When my son is that constipated, he doesn't want to eat. After the stool passes, then he starts to eat again. I always thought that it is not a good sign after surgery if the patient refuses to eat and does not have any bowel movements. Let the surgeon /doctor decide this. The stool can get compacted into pockets in the intestines and cause intense pain later. These two symptoms could be a sign of post-operative complications. Only a qualified surgeon can answer this.  (+ info)

According to WHO website, there are more than 100 types of cancers; any part of the body can be affected.
In 2005, 7.6 million people died of cancer - 13% of the 58 million deaths worldwide.
More than 70% of all cancer deaths occur in low and middle income countries.
Worldwide, the 5 most common types of cancer that kill men are (in order of frequency): lung, stomach, liver, colorectal and oesophagus
Worldwide, the 5 most common types of cancer that kill women are (in the order of frequency): breast, lung, stomach, colorectal and cervical
Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of cancer in the world.
One fifth of all cancers worldwide are caused by a chronic infection, for example human papillomavirus (HPV) causes cervical cancer and hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes liver cancer.
A third of cancers could be cured if detected early and treated adequately.
All patients in need of pain relief could be helped if current knowledge about pain control and palliative care were applied.
40% of cancer could be prevented, mainly by not using tobacco, having a healthy diet, being physically active and preventing infections that may cause cancer.

I have a malignant glioma on rt side of brain. Removed most surgically, followed by radiation & oral chemo.?

Now cyst where tumor was is getting larger.Doctor stopping chemo in June and see what happens. Any hope for me?
----------

Yes there is hope. Watch out for neurological symptoms (changes in vision and speech, weakness or numbness - especially on 1 side) Only take anti-epileptic medications if you do develop seizures, there's no evidence they need to be taken profilactically. If you feel depressed, tell your doctor to have it addressed - untreated depression worsens the outcomes. There's no need to add mental suffering to the physical. Always have you medical infromation with you when you go places.
Good luck!  (+ info)

mother had radiation and chemotherapy,100mg temodal, for 30 days but the glioma has not shruck.what can we do?

You would really have to discuss this with your mothers doctor. But if you've already had radiation therapy, that leaves more, more aggressive chemotherapy or surgery. Cortico steriods can also be of some use, but usually only for symptomatic control.  (+ info)

High-Grade Glioma brain tumor?

I have been diagnosed with this. What is the hope for me.My doctor would not give me a timeline. Is it even operable?
----------

Again, resection depends on location. However, with gamma-knife and other type surgeries available today, survival rates are tremendously higher. Chemotherapy treatments alone are inreasing long-term survival rates. Do not depend on doctor survival rates. They can not really tell you any more than their textbooks say. I was DX with GBM 4 last october. (Astrocytoma Grade 4) on right rear occipital lobe. Have had debulking operation 4 weeks ago. I am still here, and on Temodar chemo only, After 30 radiation treatments and 48 day on Temodar last November, mine is actually showing very small amount of remission. BUT, it is in remission, however slight. I was initially given 9 to 12 months. Last visit to neurosurgeon yesterday, and he said to come back in 6 months to see how things are going, that unless I started developing issues, everything was looking excellent.  (+ info)
