Is it possible for a tumor to be benign & malignant simataneously?

Just wondering, is it possible for a tumor to be found both maligant & benign simataneously? A coworker of mine said he found out he had a tumor that is both after a biopsy and that it's very rare and has only been found in about 7 people since the 1970s. Has anyone else heard of this? I tried Google but didn't find much.
----------

it isn't possible. The tumor is either benign or malignant. They are opposites. Saying a tumor can be both is like saying a daisy can sometimes be a rose and a daisy at the same time.  (+ info)

Has anyone had a brest biopsy that turned out benign?

I just had one done today and am scared. Now I have to wait 3 days for the results. I keep hearing that many biopsies come back benign. What do those lumps turn out to be if not cancer? Is there some indication now that would give me an idea of whether or not I may be facing breast cancer? And if so, what amI in for?
----------

I'm a statistician and about 15 years ago, I worked in a mammography quality control research project. I heard then that the radiologists want to biopsy three times more benign growths than malignant ones. That is because the consequences of doing more biopsies are insignificant, but the consequences of missing a cancer can be catastrophic.

Most likely, your biopsy will come back negative for cancer.  (+ info)

Should I be worried if a benign tumor starts to hurt?

Will my benign brain tumor HAVE to be removed?

I have had a MRI scan and the specialist said I have a benign brain tumor. Do I have to have it removed? Or if it is in an ok position of my brain, do I have to have it removed? Can it just go on its own, or will it change into a malignant tumor at some stage?

Please help, I can't speak to a doctor for another 24 hours and am stressed.
I don't know the position, where is the best position I can hope it is?
----------

The good news is that things are not urgent.

Some people with malignant or extra aggressive tumors have found themselves going from the doctor's office to the operating room.

It's much better not to be one of the top priorities for this - very good sign!

PS I've had a benign head tumor for at least nine years. Hasn't moved or grown. I wouldn't know it was there if it hadn't shown up on a scan for something else.  (+ info)

I have a benign liver tumor. Is there anything I should avoid?

I have been diagonsed with Focal Nodular Hyperplasia which is a benign tumor of the liver. Is it safe to drink alcohol? Take ibuprofen? Lift weights? These are questions I forgot to ask my doctor and would appreciate some info. I am a 33 yr old female in otherwise very good health.
Thanks in advance!
----------

Hi. I have had an FNH liver tumor also. I am 26 and healthy. Mine actually was removed 2 months ago because it grew from last year. Normally these tumors do not need to be removed. Mine was rather large (size of a grapefruit), and caused me lots of pain. There is nothing that you need to avoid. Alcohol, ibprofen and exericing are fine. Generally these types of tumors don't grow, are rather small, and don't cause any pain or discomfort. I would just get an MRI or CT done (which ever was done originally when it was found) in a year to make sure it is not growing. Hope this helps!  (+ info)

Can benign thyroid nodule become malignant cancer?

1) say biopsy shows nodule is benign, fine, but how do i know this will not turn into malignant cancer in future ?

2) should i be repeating biopsy every month or what?

3) and can (numerous) biopsies get the nodule to become malignant?

4) anyone whose biopsy detected benign nodule but this ended up being malignant cancer after some time?
----------

It's not likely at all. The thyroid rarely turns cancerous. I've got something called Hashimoto's disease, which basically means my body thinks my thyroid is an alien being, and fights it. This then makes my thyroid swell and develop scar tissue. What I've got can sometimes make the thyroid develop cancer, but it's so rare I'm not worried. Add to this the fact that for the rare few that do get thyroid cancer, it's very treatable in the early stages. You are going to be keeping an eye on it now anyway, so I would relax and enjoy your life! Good luck  (+ info)

My brother was told he has a rare eye condition that affects his cones in his eyes, but is nothing to worry about. He can't remember the name of it. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks!

If benign tumors are not removed could they cause any harm?

i've been doing some research on cancer for tumors, malignant and benign, and descriptions show that benign is harmless and doesn't spread. Simply removed by surgery. If not noticed can benign cause any complications in the area it is in?
----------

All kinds. They still grow and take up room and nutrients. Room is the biggest problem. They block blood flow, pinch nerves, force visceral organs to move out of place and on and on. In fact pain from nerves being pinched are often the reason benign tumors are found  (+ info)

Can a CT Scan tell if a brain tumour is benign?

My mother informed me the other day that she has a small brain tumour but was told it was it's benign. She only went for a CT Scan...I don't understand how the doctor can determine it's benign without doing a biopsy.

What do you think?
----------

Yes they can tell from a CT if it is cancer or not. However, they usually do an MRI too. This is how they are diagnosed. If the radiologist wasn’t sure they would have said so. Cancer has particular characteristics that can be seen on radiology.

Biopsies of the brain are not usually done. Part of the patient’s skull has to be cut and removed to get to the brain and no doctor is going to put the patient through this twice unless they have to.

I’m not sure why so many people are under the impression that biopsy is the only way to diagnose cancer, because it isn’t. A tissue sample is needed to know the histology, but they often know it is cancer before the biopsy is done. I have seen many cases where the biopsy was negative yet the doctor knew it was cancer so they proceeded with surgery anyway and 99% of the time they were right.  (+ info)

What is The Difference between benign and Malignant Intra-Cranial Hypertension?

I was diagnosed not long ago with Benign Intra Cranial hypertension and I have heard there is another condition called malignant intra cranial hypertension. I just wanted to know if anyone knows the difference between them
----------

Benign and malignant hypertension is a difference of magnitude. Malignant hypertension is much higher, and often more sudden. The effects on the circulatory system are different, as you could guess. Benign hypertension acts over a long time, but malignant hypertension can cause dramatic changes in the blood vessels, including a thickening that can eventually damage the organs they supply.  (+ info)
