My piercing has a nasty granuloma. Can I take the piercing out?

I have been trying for two weeks to get rid of my granuloma with sea salt soaks and it has only gotten worse. Yesterday I was so frusterated I popped it, which was possibly the worst idea ever. Is it safe to take the piercing out? I have heard that you should NOT take a piercing out if it is infected because it can trap the infection in the healing hole. I am not sure if a granuloma is considered an infection...

Take it out! You can keep it clean a lot easier if there is nothing in it. You probably need to get some antibiotics, so a visit to the doctor is in order.  (+ info)

What does a non-specific granuloma on chest xray means?

The human body has a funny way of protecting us against foreign invaders. One way is by walling off a spore, bacteria, a piece of sand, metal...etc., in granulomatous tissue. It sort of puts the invader "in prison", and prevents it from causing further infection or damage to the surrounding tissues.

It may have been something you inhaled and weren't able to cough back up, or it could be evidence of a disease process that was arrested by your immune system. If you doctor is worried about it, he or she will order more tests. Otherwise, it's not that uncommon and you don't need to be overly concerned.  (+ info)

Very strong topical steroid creams or ointments are sometimes used to speed the disappearance of the lesions. Injections of steroids directly into the rings may also be effective (consult your doctor for these). Some physicians may choose to freeze the lesions with liquid nitrogen to get rid of it.

In severe cases, ultraviolet light therapy (PUVA) or oral medications may be needed.  (+ info)
