Information about Granuloma Annulare?

I am 20 years old and 70lbs overweight! Not good! I have been struggling to lose weight for quite some time now. I used to be in a good weight range until I began taking medication for depression. I have discontinued use of depression meds (i am currently on no meds) however, the battle with the weight I gained while on the meds (70lbs) has been a real struggle.

I went to the doctors today with a rash on my foot that I thought might have been ringworm. To my dismay, the doctor suggested that it is Granuloma Annulare - something that people occasionly get before becoming diabetic!!

I have noticed some more discolored spots on my foot (very faint ones) and I'm getting very nervous.

Any information would be very helpful. The doctor said that there is no treatment - and that it could last for months or even years. I want to get healthy - I need help.
I had many blood tests done about 3 months ago for diabetes (sugar, gluclose) - a 3 hour test.. and they all came back okay.

Your doctor is correct...there is no treatment for granuloma annulare. It comes and goes, sometimes for several years, and then will suddenly clear up and go away.

If the lesions bother you tremendously, you can ask your doctor for a prescription strength cortisone cream.

Usually diabetes is only suspected if you have generalized granuloma annulare...that means that your entire body is affected. In that case, usually a biopsy and testing is done for diagnosis.

Since only your foot is affected and all your labwork was fine, try not to worry about it. Just continue with the hard struggle (and yes, I know how hard it is) to lose weight. Losing weight will help you acheive your goal of getting healthy! Good luck!  (+ info)

Is "granuloma annulare" conected with the liver?

Granuloma annulare is sometimes associated with diabetes, thyroid disease and a positive HIV status but usually occurs with normally healthy people. Althought the cause is still unknown, I've not come across any link to the liver or liver disorders.  (+ info)

How is granuloma annulare treated?

Because granuloma annulare may be symptomless, no treatment is needed. The lesions may go away by themselves in a few months. Some may take years.

However, if there are many areas, or ones that are cosmetically undesirable, there are several options. Your dermatologist may prescribe a steroid cream to apply, or inject steroids directly into the spot to help it disappear faster. Steroids can thin the skin and should be used according to your dermatologist’s directions.

PUVA is a special kind of ultraviolet light therapy. It is sometimes used for people with widespread disease under the close supervision of a dermatologist. The major side effect of PUVA is sunburn-type reactions. Other oral medications may be indicated. It is important to see a dermatologist and get the correct diagnosis and the appropriate therapy.  (+ info)
