What age do people with multiple sclerosis syndrome die?

MS is a disease and not a syndrome. People with MS live a close to normal life span and many of them live normal lives as well. People can get MS at any age and it is not necessarily a debilitating disease. I have relapsing remitting MS and you would never know that I have it. For many people with MS, there are no visible symptoms. The primary and predominant complaint that doctors hear from people with MS is that it saps the energy out of them and effects their short term memory or cognitive skills. MS does not effect any major organ nor does it shorten life span to any considerable degree. Even the majority of people with the most serious forms of MS live near normal life spans. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the population have many misconceptions about this disease. For reliable information, contact the National Multiple Sclerosis Society NMSS.org.  (+ info)

What is the final common pathway of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS)?

I have a test question I am having difficulty finding an answer for. The question is what is the final common pathway of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The main bit of information I am looking for in this question is what is meant by "final common pathway". I can probably figure out the rest of the answer myself if someone can tell me what is meant by "final common pathway". Thanks.
----------

The pathophysiology of sepsis can be regarded as a series of steps, beginning with the invasion of normally sterile tissue by microbes and the elaboration of various pro-inflammatory mediators. The final common pathway is often the development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Whereas a great deal has been learned during the past quarter century about the inflammatory processes associated with sepsis (and other related conditions, such as ischemia/reperfusion injury), our understanding is far less developed with respect to the pathophysiological events that lead to organ dysfunction under these conditions. Nevertheless, efforts by both clinical and laboratory scientists are leading to new knowledge in this area. The chapters in this volume provide a state-of-the-art overview of many aspects of the pathophysiology of organ dysfunction in critical illness.  (+ info)

What would your reaction be if you found out your boyfriend (or husband) has Tourettes Syndrome or Multiple?

Sclerosis? Please only answer if you have had this particular or a similar experience.
----------

This is not the end of the world. Try to judge him on he content of his character, not his physical attributes. My son has Tourettes, OCD and ADHD. Do we love him any less? Certainly not!

I will add that it takes a woman with character and fortitude to love someone with a disability. Do not think that a wonderful relationship is not possible. You will find ways to love each other that are beyond physical (which is passing anyway).

Best wishes.  (+ info)

what is the difference between guillain-barre syndrome and multiple sclerosis?

Apologies about the confusing answers so far.

Guillain-Barrè syndrome and MS are very similar. Both are autoimmune diseases. Both involve the body's immune system attacking the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells. And in both conditions, scientists do not know the exact cause.

The big differences are that Guillain-Barrè syndrome attacks the Peripheral Nervous System, while MS attacks the Central Nervous system. As such, since the PNS regenerates, most people fully recover from Guillain-Barrè. The recovery period may be as little as a few weeks or as long as a few years. About 30 percent of those with Guillain-Barré still have a residual weakness after 3 years. About 3 percent may suffer a relapse of muscle weakness and tingling sensations many years after the initial attack. Since the CNS does not regenerate, MS offers no hope of recovery.  (+ info)

is myelodysplasic syndrome and multiple sclerosis related?

Question about Guillain-Barré syndrome and multiple sclerosis!!!?

Autoantibodies are present in both Guillain-Barré syndrome and multiple sclerosis. Plasmapheresis
is helpful in treating the former but not the latter. What is the DIFFERENCE?!
----------

Hi, I am an MD. First of all, plasma exchange is useful for acute exacerbations of MS that do not respond to steroids. Guillain-Barre is an acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy while MS is a chronic demyelinating CNS disease. The autoantibodies in these diseases are not the same. It is a mystery why steroids are useful for MS and not for GBS.

Essentially, MS is a disease that no proven trigger and is chronic and GBS is an acute disease that is linked to several infections. They do not involve the same part of the nervous system and the treatments are somewhat different. There are many questions about both diseases that have yet to be elucidated.  (+ info)
