Why sudden loss of hearing in Right Ear?

A person aged 45 diagnosed diabetic few months back suddenly felt dizzy (imbalance) accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea the next day found he lost the hearing entirely and hasn't regained a week now despite wax removal.
----------

It sounds like Labyrinthitis which can occur after an ear infection or an upper respiratory infection. It is believed to be related to either a bacteria or virus caused by the initial infection. Certainly the symptoms seem to match Labyrinthitis:
Dizziness or vertigo, possibly severe, with nausea and vomiting
Loss of balance, especially falling toward the affected side
Hearing loss in the affected ear.

Does sudden hearing loss in one ear often cause loss of taste on that side of the tongue?

It could, if the hearing loss is neurological, or if i involves your middle ear. There's a nerve that runs through your middle ear that innervates part of your tongue, so if your middle ear is damaged it could have also damaged that nerve. Do you get a metallic taste on the side of your tongue? The good news here is that the nerves on the other side of your tongue will take over pretty quickly and your taste should return to almost normal. Your hearing is another matter entirely - go see an audiologist! Good luck!  (+ info)

had a sudden hearing loss a couple of days ago. I was taking an antibiotic (Ciprofloaxin)?

thinking I had a sinus infection. The antibiotic made no difference in my nasal passages. The strange thing is I have significant hearing loss in one ear. I also fell off the deck but landed on my feet... Does anyone know why I would lose my hearing so suddenly? Could it be allergies?Could it be I have a sinus infection that has gone up in my ears -- but the antibiotics didn't work?

mystery questions that an ENT doc could answer along with an audiogram.  (+ info)

I have been diagnosed with Sudden Sensorineural hearing loss. On Prednisone now. Scared to death! Heard of it?

I am scared to death that my hearing won't return, and I will be stuck with the sound of a jet engine in my head! Dr. thinks it's viral, but schedule an MRI to rule out a tumor. I would appreciate ANY information regarding this.
----------

Yes it does happen. Unfortunately there is no way to predict what will happen in your specific case. Just follow the Dr.'s orders and take your meds as prescribed. I am an audiologist and it amazes me how many people I see with a huge difference between their ears from a sudden loss 6 mos ago, a few years ago etc. They never went to a doctor for it. How can you not be concerned when you suddenly don't hear?!? I mean seriously for anybody reading this if you suddenly can't hear much out of one or both of your ears get to the ENT as fast as possible. Sudden SNHL is best treated with steroids in first 48 hours. And many Primary care physicians don't recognize patients symptoms as sudden hearing loss and treat it as an ear infection with antibiotics and decongestants.  (+ info)

Sudden dizziness, loss of body control, impared hearing, over-sweating?

My mother, who is 50 but in better shape than most 20 year olds, has been getting dizzy spells, almost fainting, overheating to the point where her body is covered in sweat, and she says she cant hear anything but the noise of rushing water. She recovers in about an hour. She has recently started taking diet pills. Could they be related?
----------

Could be the diet pills. Has she gone through menopause yet. Maybe a combination of changing hormones, and diet pills. She should really stop the pills and see her doctor. The over the counter ones are not always safe.  (+ info)

Anyone ever had sudden hearing loss?

My brother has over the last 2 days lost the hearing in his left ear. Anyone had a problem like this before, what was it, how did you fix it? We are thinking a ball of wax rolled into where it blocks his hearing, but has anyone else had other issues?
----------

He'll need to see his family doctor; Hopefully its just a wax blockage but there are many other causes, the commonest is congestion behind the eardrum - usually temporary but may need treatment or simple surgery if it doesn't clear.

Amongst the rarer causes is viral damage to the inner ear, which may or may not be reversible.

There are two basic types of deafness: conductive and sensorineural. Conductive losses are by far the commonest and include wax and congestion. Sensorineural involve either the cochlea or the acoustic nerve.

Ask your brother if his own voice sounds louder in his normal ear or his affected ear. If its in the affected ear (like when you have a cold) it means there is a conductive loss and is usually easily treated. If his voice sounds louder in his good ear this should be considered a medical emergency and help should be sought immediately  (+ info)

Cost of CROS digital hearing aid for sudden hearing loss?

When I was a teenager, I experienced sudden hearing loss in one ear. For several years I wore one of the old fashioned CROS hearing aids with the connecting wire that had to be run either through my hair or along my hairline at my neck. I got tired of it and stopped wearing it. That has been about 10 years ago. I've heard that now because of digital technology, the wire is not necessary. Can anyone tell me about how much I should expect to pay for a wireless CROS model now? I have little or no hearing loss in my good ear. Also, which companies sell this type of hearing aid? If you have used one, please tell me if you've been satisfied with the results. Thanks.
----------

Are you sure you really want a CROS aid? Most people I know who have tried them, hate them. Have you looked into a BAHA device instead?  (+ info)
