Anyone ever experience sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL), or know of anyone who has? ?

What was the treatment plan? Prognosis? Know of any experimental remedies?
----------

I can look into it for you. I am a speech and audiology major, and I have a couple of professors who may can answer your question. The prognosis would depend on severe factors such as age, severity, etc. SSHL is a complexity for audiologist. I am not sure if there is just one treatment plan or anything that has been very successful. If you don't find answers than you can send me an email, and I will email one of my professors.   (+ info)

Will hearing return after sudden sensory neural hearing loss?

Sudden hearing loss in right ear upon awakening accompained by vertigo and nausea....Saw ENT Dr. and placed on prednisone regimine..had MRI which was negative...have taken 8 days of Prednisone and have 5 more days left.....Nausea gone and only occasional vertigo......also had hearing test which showed significant loss....
I had shingles approximately 21/2 months ago....so I am wondering about the association between the two.....
I am very concerned about what degree of hearing I can expect to return if any.....
----------

Prognosis looks good from everything I've read--it may take awhile but most of your hearing should return. Could find how long it will take, but yes it can be related to viral infections such as herpes zoster (shingles). Good Luck ;)  (+ info)

Has anyone had Sudden Neruosensoral Hearing Loss?

went suddenly deaf in my left ear - just humming and some buzzes and ringing. told sorry, it just happens. been tested for tumors (brain MRI), plaque (mini-stroke), cholesterol, and other blood work. Had auto accident 5 months earlier but can't make a connection - wish I could because that would make my settlement better. Anyone else have something like this? Any other tests I can have done? Afraid of losing hearing in my other ear.
It seems I left out the fact that when this first happened I went immediatel to the ER and they did put me on steroids and Flonase - neither of which did any good. I have been to 2 different ENT's and where I was told the humming & ringing would subside in a month or so it has gotten worse. After all the tests both doctors are stumped and just tell me to come back in six months. I am very paranoid at this point about losing the hearing in my other ear.

My sister had this although not from an accident. I cant think what her diagnosis was called however she also suffered from dizziness and fainting.
An operation helped, however she is deaf in that ear.
Keep looking for a doctor who can diagnose you properly.  (+ info)

sudden hearing loss.?

One day i was filling up a bicycle tire and i saw the inner tube start to come out of this whole the tire had. I thought i was hearing a leak so i put my ear right next to it and it popped literally on my ear. This happened about 5-6 years ago. Is there any type of surgery or treatment for this sudden type of hearing loss?
i can still hear from the ear just not as sharp as my other one

Yes , you should have gone to the hospital right away. You probably have a ruptured ear drum. I dont know if they can fix now but it worth the effort to find out. De  (+ info)

Sudden hearing loss in either ear than normal. Has this ever happened to you?

I've a mild amount of hearing loss in one ear and ever since the diagnosis I've been plagued by fear and abnormal anxiety about the rest of my hearing. It's a been 2 or 3 years since I've known.

Not sure how long this has been going on but occasionally one ear left or right - the hearing will fade out suddenly and I'll hear some ringing than my ears feel dull for a few minutes and slowly they come to. This is not new and it's been happening for as long as I can remember.

Generally when it happens my nose feels a little stuff and maybe some allergies are involved... or I don't know, maybe I drink caffeine.

I'm aware of Sudden Hearing Loss Syndrome but I understand that in most cases once it's gone it's gone or it's a very real condition... not something that comes and goes always so I don't think this is it. I don't take any ototoxic drugs either.

Can it have anyting to do with sinuses or caffeine, maybe stress.. etc. Any help is great.
I also have a general fullness in my ears at times.
My hearing loss was also caused by loud music... headphones, I'm 99% sure.

So I've been so focused on staying away from loud noises and sounds except when I couldn't help it.

I've seen both ENT's and audiologists within a year and they didn't identify anything serious, but will check again coming up.
No dizzyness... it's about time for my audiologist appt. so I will, but appreciate the help from everyone.
...I've had ringing in my left ear for probably 5 or 6 years now. The more research you do on ears the more you realize nobody has a handle on how this stuff works... not to the point where things can be easily fixed. So it's so important to keep care.

Most of the time when we get "hearing loss" it's not really hearing loss but a decrease in the penetration of sound into the cochlea because of increased fluid behind the ear. Coming out from the inside of your ear into your throat is something a eustachian tube. When you get congested this tube gets blocked off. So the fluid from your ear cannot drain. This in turn increases the amount of fluid in your ear thereby decreasing how you hear. Real hearing loss is generally not sudden and is generally to either high or low frequency at first and then may be total. Sudden hearing loss syndrome is very very rare. Another possibility is something called Ménière’s disease, but I doubt it since you did not mention any dizziness. Listen if you are that concerned go to your doctor to have a hearing test. I'm sure it's nothing.

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss Treatment?

Hello, a good friend of mines has been suffering from Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss for about 5 months in his right ear and he really doesn't know what to do. He has been to the doctor and they have said that the cause of his hearing loss is unknown and they really don't know what to tell him. The doctor gave him PREDNISONE steroids to take but he said that they really did not work and didn't improve his hearing. I was wondering if anyone know of any steriods or any kind of medication or treatment other than hearing devices which he can try to improve the hearing in his right ear. I did some research and saw that a lot of times the hearing comes back spontaneously but sometimes that doesn't happen. If you can help with any information, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and take care.
He has had an MRI which has shown that his head is normal and he has had hearing tests that show that he has lost a significant amount of hearing in his right ear.

The treatment for SSNHL is prednisone. However, it works best when given in the first 48 hours of the hearing loss. Unfortunately many people wait too long before seeking medical help in this situation. Unfortunately your friend is likely stuck with his hearing loss. In some cases a hearing aid can help depending on much hearing loss has occurred.  (+ info)
