can blood thinners cause a subdural hematoma?

can blood thinners cause a subdural hematoma in the head. or is a subdural hematoma caused by an head injury
----------

If you are on blood thinners and your INR level becomes too high, you can start bleeding ANYWHERE within the body. You can start bleeding anywhere with an injury or without an injury. I have been on Coumadin for 4 years and will be for the rest of my life. I go to the doctor once to twice per month and have my levels checked. You have to be careful when you are on blood thinners and have regular INR checks.  (+ info)

Is there a possibility that a skull fracture was misdiagnosed as just a subdural hematoma?

Last summer at our family reunion,my sister was involved in an accident in the pool.My nephew jumped on top of her in the water, and she hit the bottom of the concrete pool with her head in her R temporal region. She says when she got out of the pool that she was disoriented for a short amount of time, but the swelling began immediately. It was huge! With all of the medical people in our family, not one person thought she needed to have a CT scan. They sat her on the couch with ice on her head. The rest of the day it seemed as though she was in a drunken stupor. The bruising startedabout 72 hours later. She had a moon face with raccoon eyes, bruising on the R side of her face, and bruising behind her right ear with severe headache lasting for about two weeks.I finally talked her into going to the ER.2 CT scans later and no fracture.Since she has had memory loss,H/A,muscle weakness, neck pain, and 3 hard nodules have appeared behind R ear. I can't convince her to call a neurologist.

She needs to go to the doctor ASAP. It is not the skull fracture you should be worried about. When bleeding in the brain occurs it creates a site of injury. At this site the are gets very acidic because of the damage. Then your immune system tries to fight the damage by neutrophils and macrophages. They eat through the tissue and you make scars. In the brain the scars are permanent and they cannot be fixed. When blood supply begins to regenerate at that site, a person can develop another bleed, that cannow be affecting any areas of the brain, also it is possible to get a reperfusion injury to the body that will create cell death and make holes in the brain. SERIOUSLY TIE HER UP AND TAKE HER TO THE ER!!!!! You dont want to mess with Brain injury....It has to be treated ASAP or that part of your brain will be gone forever  (+ info)

Can an infant sustain traumatic brain injuries during a c-section delivery such as a subdural hematoma???

Yes. If the physician or anyone else on the medical staff is negligent, then the baby can suffer such an injury. I suggest contacting a attorney.  (+ info)

subdural hematoma recovery??

I found out yesterday that a friend had fallen off of a roof and suffered a subdural hematoma. I guess the doctors drilled a hole in his skull to drain the blood, and now he is in an induced coma to reduce swelling, and on a ventilator. They said that he should make a full recovery. I know that these things vary drastically from case to case, but could anyone tell me about how long the doctors will keep him in a coma and on the ventilator (as in, a few hours or a few weeks)?? And what will his recovery be like, and how long will he be in the hospital? As I said, I know that you can't really give me a definite answer, but just a ballpark estimate would be great, maybe from past experiences that you've had? I really know very little about the subject, so any knowledge would be nice. Thanks a lot.

about 2 weeks, beware that if it was frontal lobe the person has a tendancy to be very aggressive and nasty when they recover and it usually doesn't get better  (+ info)

BI Latural Subdural Hematoma operation results?

A lot depends on the size of the bleeds.

If they're small, done soon after discovery, and the patient is otherwise healthy, the odds are better.  (+ info)

Mild concussion? massive subdural hematoma? severe concussion? meningitis? OR cerebral contusion?

A man is brought into the emergency room after a motorcycle accident. At the scene, he was found unconscious, with numerous scrapes and bruises on the left side of his head and swelling above his right ear. When he regains consciousness 3 hours later, he complains of a headache and appears dazed. His speech is slurred, and his pupils are equal and reactive to light. Twenty-four hours later, all signs appear normal. Which of the following would most likely be the diagnosis of his condition?

a. mild concussion
b. massive subdural hematoma
c. severe concussion
d. meningitis
e. cerebral contusion

Family member slipped on ice and was diagnosed with a SUBDURAL HEMATOMA...symptoms described; please help?

A family member recently slipped on ice and was found unconscious and taken to the emergency room. It was found that she had internal bleeding; a subdural hematoma.

For the first 3 or 4 days she was on a respirator and a feeding tube and basically in a coma. Today is about the fifth day and she can breathe on her own but is still on a feeding tube.

She opens her eyes now but does not respond to commands and when her eyes are open she does not turn her head toward the person who is calling her; neither does she make eye contact. Today, when asked to raise her arm, she did, but it might just be a coincidence.

Can someone please help in telling me if this prognosis sounds good?
Can someone go from this described state to one day waking up somewhat conscious of her state and surroundings; maybe back to normal?
Or does this sound like permanent brain damage?
We are not sure yet if her cortex is damaged. She is in her late 50's.

Thank you.
----------

,A severe blow to the head would cause a subdural haematoma.
No one can profess to be god, its a waiting time, and hopefully she will respond soon, and then the powers that be will be able to assess, good sign she is coming around, refer Richard Hammond.
I was once in a serious traffic accident, i was wrote off!! on a ventilator and loadsa tubes, when i responded the third day coming around it took a while, back to normal and working in management with 70 staff now who highly respect me and i do same to them.
You will just have to wait and see, I'm sorry when she fully comes around.
Thoughts with you

My 85 year old grama Gigi, had surgery on Monday to release blood and pressure from brain, subdural hematoma?

My 85 year old grama gigi fell down stairs x mas day, had a subdural hematoma, cats scans showed new bleed recently, Monday they drained the bleed to release pressure and she is in ICu, and having illusions, I am worried she has taken a turn for the worse, is it normal for her to not make sense and talk to old relatives, that arent there? Maybe this is part of the anesthesia wearing off and trauma and being old for surgery? or is it something she will be permananetly brain damaged, her husband pappy of 67 years is waiting at home and bedside and depends on her recovery, were positive and hope for the best for those with past experience who may know the outcome somewhat to expect, any ideas , advice welcome..Thank you
----------

Bless her heart, and Yes all of this is normal... My best friend had the same thing and didnt make sense either..

This is Brain surgery and it may take her a good 6-8 weeks before she is back to herself.

The best thing to do is what they call Reality- Orientation every day 3x day or more and what that is Remind her and ask her
Name, bday , Tell her where she is and then ask her later in conversation where she is - tell her the surgery that was done, Pappy is home and doing well - remind her of FUN positive things and she will get thru this with flying colors.

Do not baby her, she needs to try and do pretty much what she did before the surgery.. Yes she is 85, but one thing that will bring an older adult down faster is us baby-ing them. Assist them, but dont do it for them! Pappy needs to know this too
How cool that it is 67 yrs that is so special!

My sincere wish to you and your family and to Gigi that God will heal her soon and she will make a full recovery! Plz keep me posted! I wish you all the best!

s the prognosis of subdural hematoma ?

the hematoma is as a result of ruptured dural arterio venous fistula
----------

i don't know how to begin answering this... you seem to know a little bit about anatomy or at least a doctor told you something. however it doesn't matter much where the blood comes from as where it ends up.

maybe you know about the blood/brain barrier, or BBB? it is sort of a shield membrane (surrounding blood vessels near the brain) which prevents certain things from coming into contact with neurons. the fluid in your brain is cerebro-spinal fluid (commonly abbreviated CSF), much like blood plasma... water, salts, glucose, selected proteins or amino acids... the BBB is permeable to some drugs but not all. interestingly, it is not permeable to some things which occur naturally in your body. red blood cells are one of the things that gets filtered out. if i remember correctly, it is the heme-group of red blood cells that is neurotoxic, therefore filtered by the BBB. for all practical purposes, neurons do not regenerate. but, especially in young brains, increased growth of fibers such as dendrites and axons from other cells can help compensate.

the dura mater is one of several layers covering the brain. it may be considered the outermost layer, if you don't count the skull. it is pretty tough and has a rich blood supply. it takes a pretty severe injury to cause bleeding in this area, and a subdural hematoma requires immediate attention. when you say "subdural hematoma" you are referring to pools of blood beneath the dura mater.

i can't tell you the exact prognosis because it depends on the location of the injury, the extent of the bleeding, the age of the victim, how it was treated as well as how fast, etc. a large bleed may be neurotoxic to a large area of cortex, and it is especially dangerous because pressure can build up which causes damage of its own. a person can become permanently blind, experience seizures, go into a coma, die, etc.

let me just say this. a subdural hematoma is never good. but things look better for people who are treated quickly (with surgery if necessary), people with a very small site of bleeding, and young people.  (+ info)
