Also, can I ever stop taking Imuran?
----------

Autoimmune hepatits can be controlled if caught in it's earliest stages. With treatment, 70% of people go into remission.....no cure. Cirrhosis is not curable, but can (in some cases)be controlled. Unfortunately, cirrhosis leads to liver failure eventually. A liver transplant may be a viable option  (+ info)

Autoimmune hepatitis is one variety of hepatitis which means inflammation of the liver. Most types of hepatitis are caused by various viruses but autoimmune hepatitis is not caused by a virus. Instead, for whatever reason, the immune system begins attacking the person's own liver. Autoimmune hepatitis is not cancer and would lead to cancer only rarely as compared with viral hepatitis. However it is possible to have both viral and autoimmune hepatitis. I am sure your Dr will have already tested for this possibility.

Autoimmune hepatitis is usually treated with a corticosteroid type drug like prednisone along with a good diet and usually responds quickly as long as alcohol abuse or other drug problems are not part of the liver problem. Here is a good web page to read up on autoimmune hepatitis. good luck

Why would a DNA blood test be ordered when the Dr thinks you have autoimmune hepatitis?

Probably has something to do with the genetics and the disease.  (+ info)

My daughter had a liver transplant 6.5 years and her autoimmune hepatitis has come back. Why and how??

She was 26 when she had her trransplant because of autoimmune hepatitis and cirrhosis. She has monthly lab work and her last "numbers" were in the 400's and they should be in the 20's for 30's. She takes 12 Prograff pills a day and was just started again on Rapamune (sp??) and steroids. I don't know the dosage. She says she is not drinking alcohol and has felt pretty good-she had no idea til Tuesday about the abnormal "numbers.". She has lab work monthly and had a liver biopsy on Halloween. Is there specific things she needs to be doing--better diet, more rest, less stress, etc that she needs to follow? She was planning her wedding for next April but doesn't want to go thru with it if she's going to be sick again.

There are a couple natural supplements that has helped liver enzymes drop significantly. One particular case they dropped from 800 to 34 by taking two each of NutriFeron and Liver DTX Complex.

Liver DTX Complex is a botanical blend that promotes liver health. Plant-based healers such as milk thistle seed extract, dandelion, and turmeric help flush out toxins, thwart free radicals, and support liver regeneration.

Nutriferon is a clinically proven blend of immune-strengthening plant extracts. It strengthens immune response by boosting the body's natural interferon. It was created by Dr. Kojima the discoverer of interferon that naturally increases the production of interferon in the body.

Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions.  (+ info)

can cordblood from my grandbaby be used to help with my autoimmune hepatitis?

With the current state of the science, unfortunately it will not. I'm very sad to hear about your condition. Once the immune system recognizes "self" proteins as foreign, it just a matter of time until its target is destroyed. The main course of treatment is steroids (to mellow out your immune system) and strict diet (to minimize any additional damage).

Cord blood is a great source of a variety of cells that can be used in research -- someday to hopefully help with your condition. Unfortunately, we aren't to that point yet. Also, because it is your grandbaby, there are significant genetic differences between you and the child. The 50% of genetics come from the other parent (your child's other parent and their spouce) for each conception means that the baby is only 25% "your genetics". Being different, this will still trigger your immune system as if the new cells were a virus or bacteria.

When your liver gets to the point of near-failure, you will likely need to receive a liver transplant with life-long, very strong immuno-suppressive medications so the organ isn't rejected.

Congratulation on your new grandchild. I hope this answer helps, although it is probably tough to hear.  (+ info)

Four years ago I had severe problems with my liver.I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis. Now I'm okay an?

Four years ago I had severe problems with my liver.I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis. Now I'm okay and healthy and my g/f is now 6months pregnant. I'm now worried that this may be hereditary and my child may be born with liver problems which in turn gives the child jaundice. Please help. I'm very nervous all of a sudden. Thanks : )

Hi, have you been tested for celiac disease as well? A LOT of people with autoimmune hep also have celiac and it is usually overlooked. I was just reading the latest articles in the Scandanavian GI journal about this issue.
Anyway, do you have Wilson's disease by any chance? Since I do not know the specifics of your personal health, the best thing to do is to talk to your doctor and then talk to the OBGYN about your personal health history and allow them to determine if your child is at risk or not.
Good luck, and please consider getting tested for celiac disease at some point.  (+ info)
