Who is the best doctor to treat a very large abdominal hernia in a patient who has had major abdominal surgery?

My father is 78 years old. He has a large abdominal hernia many years following major abdominal surgery for colon cancer and he has a permanent colostomy near the site.

Mass General Hospital might be your best bet if you're close to the East Coast. It's one of the best hospitals in the world (as are others in the Boston area).  (+ info)

Did you develop an abdominal hernia either during or after pregnancy?

I am pregnant with my second child, and apparently with the first I developed an abdominal hernia. My doc says it could be normal but they won't really do anything about it until after my 6-week checkup. In the meantime, I'm consistently measuring a month ahead because the hernia is now about the size of a grapefruit. Did anyone else experience this during a pregnancy? And did you have to have surgery, or did it heal up on its own?

Friend of mine got hers during pregnancy and they induced her early. Just a couple weeks. Only because she was in so much pain. I think it just went away afterwards. They didnt have to do anything with it. Thats what they told her..that it would go away after having the baby..and it did...  (+ info)

Abdominal hernia: How can you tell if its getting worse?

I just found out that I have a small abdominal hernia. The doctor said to do stomach exercises and lose some weight. He said if it gets worse, I might have to have surgery. How can I tell? It is sore now. What to do? Thanks
----------

In general, hernias that are at risk for complications, that cause pain or that limit activity should be repaired. If they are not repaired they are at risk for surgery at a later date. Sometimes a hernia can be controlled by a belt like device called a truss,it applies external compression that pushes the tissues back into the abdomen and holds them there. It must be carefully applied on a daily basis only used for selective situations carefully evaluated by a doctor.  (+ info)

Is it possible to cure abdominal hernia without surgery?

My partner has a little girl and he said when she was younger she had hernia (because she cried alot as a baby) or something like that but I think he may be confused about something else because I thought abdominal hernia had to be cured by surgery. Which she has never had :S Any help?

Cansu - There is really no such thing as an "abdominal" hernia. Instead, there are umbilical hernias of the belly button, inguinal or femoral hernias in the groin, or internal hiatus hernias of the stomach into the diaphragm muscle. These hernias do not self heal. What newborns or young infants may most commonly have is one or two inguinal hernias. These are easily repaired - surgically. Some hernias can be controlled by mechanical means in adults, but all require an operation for cure.  (+ info)

What would be the best type of specialist to go to for suspected hernia or tear in abdominal wall?

I've had this nagging elusive pain in my lower right abdomen since I was a kid. It flairs up at times after certain times of physical exertion. I've been checked for a hernia on more than one occassion and am ready to get more aggressive to finally determine what it is..

If you can physically see a "bump" or something- it could be an abscess. I had a similar problem in my belly button where a bump would appear and dissappear. Then it eventually got to big and puss type stuff started coming out.

My actual doctor thought it was a hernia and when i got the the hospital they knew right away it was an abscess, not a hernia.

This may sound gross but if there is a physical bump there- touch it and if it has a foul odor to it, it is probably an abscess or a cyst  (+ info)

Is abdominal pain a sign of having inguinal hernia?

I have done a urinalysis but the doctor said that I have no kidney infection. But still, I can feel the pain in my lower abdomen, my back ,my chest, and my groin. And I am really aware of that. Pls. Help me to know what it is and what should I do to get rid of it? Hope it is only a simple abdominal pain.
----------

Not necessarily, you may have a Bladder Infection which also causes a lot of Pain, particularly if it is untreated. If you had a Hernia, your Doctor surely should have noticed this during your Examination. But in order to know exactly what is going on in your Body, request from your Doctor a complete Blood Test and X Rays.
Stay calm about this and don't Panic.  (+ info)

Does a hernia hurt, and can you get one after abdominal surgery?

I have recently had a hysterectomy, where they cut me from my belly button down, I have now got a lump next to my scar that is very painful. My doctor felt it yesterday, and was getting me to cough, I explained it was very painful, he said it will be!(some help)he said it was a weakness in the muscle wall, I take it from this he means a hernia? If so, is it normal for it to be so painful, I can't wear most of my clothes as they rest on it. Any advice would be greatly welcomed.
----------

Sounds like a hernia. Still, you should phone his nurse and ask her to confirm this from your chart. Also ask for a time frame as to when it should start feeling better. State clearly and strongly how much this hurts & the extent to which it interferes with your dressing & daily activities. Ask at what point you should take action if it's not feeling better.
If you get no satisfactory attention/answers, seek a 2nd opinion from a Dr. who is a more skilled listener & communicator. Reasearch hernias on WebMD & other good sites, and be aware that without adequate treatment it can cause tissue strangulation-a very painful emergency.
Not to scare you, but your instincts are right, and you need some better answers now.
Take good care, said a prayer for you, hope you are recovering more quickly very soon.  (+ info)

Can a Abdominal Hernia Cause Internal Bleeding?

Had period for one week cut off for 3 days and bleeding again and have a Abdominal hernia.
----------

A hernia means there is a hole in the wall of your muscles surrounding your abdomen. If this is high up on the abdomen, then it is called a hiatal hernia, often resulting in acid reflux or indigestion. If it is down by the testes in men, it is called a testicular hernia. But it can occur anywhere in the abdomen. This condition can be dangerous as your intestines and other inside can come out through that hole and cause severe pain, and other serious situations. If your uterus or fallopian tubes came through the herniated muscle, then you need to go to the doctor ASAP to get this repaired and fixed as it could be life-threatening.  (+ info)
