is having a hiatal hernia and eating chocolate affect each other?

i have a hernia and asthma and allergies and sometimes when i eat chococlate i get sick. my mom thinks it is the hernia, but i don't know...help me
----------

You need a diagnosis, it may be GERD. Chocolate and tomatoes and coffee and red wines are on the top of no-no lists for folks with heartburn and reflux because they are acidic and can make symptoms worse. Perhaps you are allergic to chocolate. See a doc.  (+ info)

Has anyone ever had a hiatal hernia?

I think it is what I have but I'm not positive. I've had a hard time breathing and stomach pains that increase when I eat spicy foods, chocolate, tomatoes, and oranges. My doctor told me I might have a peptic ulcer or gastritis, but my grandmother said it might be a hiatal hernia. Has anyone ever had one and can you tell me what I can do about it?
----------

If I were you I would get a referral to Gastroenterologist. He can diagnose which you have quickly. Here's how each is diagnosed.

Hiatal hernias are diagnosed incidentally when an upper gastrointestinal x–ray or endoscopy is done during testing to determine the cause of upper gastrointestinal symptoms such as upper abdominal pain. On both the x–ray and endoscopy, the hiatal hernia appears as a separate "sac" lying between what is clearly the esophagus and what is clearly the stomach. This sac is delineated by the lower esophageal sphincter above and the diaphragm below. The hernia may only be visible during swallows, however.

To diagnose an ulcer, your doctor will order one of the following tests:

An upper GI -- a series of x-rays taken after you drink a substance called barium.
An esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) -- a special test performed by a gastroenterologist in which a thin tube is inserted through your mouth into the gastrointestinal tract to look at your stomach and small intestines

Symptoms of Peptic Ulcer:
A burning pain in the gut is the most common symptom. The pain

feels like a dull ache

comes and goes for a few days or weeks

starts 2 to 3 hours after a meal

comes in the middle of the night when your stomach is empty

usually goes away after you eat

Other symptoms are

losing weight

not feeling like eating

having pain while eating

feeling sick to your stomach

vomiting

Symptoms of Hiatal Hernia:

heartburn
regurgitation
nausea
*If more complicated, symptoms can resemble those of Reflux or GERD

Symptoms of both seem similar, see the Gastroenterologist & get tested to get the correct diagnose. Hope this helps!  (+ info)

Will a hiatal hernia close and heal with medical treatment or is it a lifetime condition?

Does prilosec relieve or cure when used in conjunction with lifestyle changes (diet, weight loss, avoiding certain foods, upright posture after meals, etc.) ?
----------

The cure for hiatal hernia is surgical repair. Prilosec and other medications help to avoid or reduce symptoms of acid reflux which is a problem with hiatal hernias.  (+ info)

good foods to eat if you have a hiatal hernia?

I have had one for a while, but the past three months or so it's really been bad. Most times when I eat I get sick, I always have a lot of pain, and I just can't take it anymore. I am on Prilosec and Pepcid, but so far no relief. I know diet plays a big part, so what are some good foods?
----------

I would suggest light food, low on fat, and to eat it distributed into more numerous small meals instead of few large ones. Also, I would suggest to not eat too much immediately before lying down.
Watch coffee and alcohol, too.  (+ info)

Is hiatal hernia visible on the outside?

My doctor says he can't feel the hiatal hernia on the outside, but I think if I may have it, and it may be causing my GERD.
----------

Definition

Hernia is a general term used to describe a bulge or protrusion of an organ through the structure or muscle that usually contains it.

Description

There are many different types of hernias. The most familiar type are those that occur in the abdomen, in which part of the intestines protrude through the abdominal wall. This may occur in different areas and, depending on the location, the hernia is given a different name.

What is the most effective way to help/heal hiatal hernia and an ulcer?

My doctor has me on Nexium, but I don't want to be on medication for very long (I hear people are on it for years).
----------

You are right to not want to stay on Nexium. There is an antibiotic in them and it could cause the loss of effectiveness should you ever need an antibiotic for something else. You could of course have an operation for it but if it is not really bad (in your doctor's eyes) he/she will not suggest it.
Diet is the best way to control the hiatial hernia. Staying away from the things that trigger acid reflux is your best bet. I do take Nexium "on occasion" when I know I'll be eating those spicy foods that I can't seem to deprive myself of :)  (+ info)

How do you know how long you've had a hiatal hernia?

They just found it Thursday. But could it have been there since the beginning of this year?
They have never done and EDG before but I have had these symptoms before.

But before it had nausea and vomiting with it.
----------

I don't believe there is any way of telling when u developed it....
but, yes it began to develope until it got so large it began to hurt..
and based on where it was located.. u knew sooner than if it was a hernia in ur stomach,
.. I have a Friend who has 3 hernia's in the stomach and lower area.. which have been protruding out for several years..
but they will not go have a operation to remove them.. they never hurt.. they have allergies.. and cough a lot.. and they think that is what caused them..
I got my hiatal hernia.. back in 1985... and it hurt for 4-6 months.. then I went to the Dr's office.. and got on medication..
I had to learn no to worry so much.. (but I still worry some).. and it is still in my chest over or near my heart.. I always thought I was having a heart attack when it would hurt..
I've never had it removed.. I do not take medication for it now..
so, YES ~~I guess it could of been there for a while before it starting hurting u...
I hope this has helped..good luck..  (+ info)
