Can a hiatal hernia go unnoticed from an endoscopy?

Curious if they doctors could have missed something.
----------

Did you have an endoscopy? that checks the lining of your esaphagus, stomache, etc. usually checking for tears caused by liver problems, or GERD,hernias, heart problems... A hiatal hernia can make you gassy, burping symptoms--pain in the mid chest, enlargement between abdomen and chest. etc.. did you discuss the possibilities of having this to your doctor. An endoscopy checks on further problems including hiatal hernia. Hiatal hernias are common with middle age, smokers, obesity=== raising your bed 30 degrees, no lay down after eating, stop smoking... Antacids for acid reflux.. can alleviate symptoms--check with dr. for further information..  (+ info)

Will gastritis and hiatal hernia stop me from getting a gastric bypass?

Just got my results back from the required endoscopy for the surgeon who I will see next week. Am I right to be dubitative or am I making too big a fuss over nothing? Thanks!!
----------

It shouldn't. Gastritis is any inflammation of the lining of the stomach. There are so many things that can cause this, it'll be over before you get done reading this. A hiatal hernia is a protrusion of the upper part of the stomach into the esophagus through a tear or weakness of the diaphragm. These are usually the cause of acid reflux and/or indigestion. These shouldn't upset your plans at all. If you already went through all the other qualifications okay, then these alone are fine. This condition is common among people that suffer from morbid obesity too. The biggest problems are with the heart and/or lungs. If these were already okay-ed then I think you are good to go. I hope that you're excited about starting the next stage of your life. When you go out the doors after the procedure you'll have a great helping hand to start you out with. Please make sure you have all the things you need when things start to get bad. Stress and sometimes leveling off periods might make you think you are unsuccessful. Try to start a daily diary and put down every calorie you put in your mouth. During times when you start to level off, these diary's are handy to look through to see where you can cut down a little bit more. Try to find a friend as in AA does, someone like a buddy that you see in the office. Then see if you two can team up and depend on each other to go and get exercise, shopping, and weighing in too. These can all help you through. Family support is at the top of the list here too. Reaching your goal might take a very long time. You didn't get that way overnight, and you can't take it off fast either. Just find your pace and rely on the bariatric meetings to help you through it all too. Good luck and God Bless  (+ info)

Is depression a part of a hiatal hernia and acid reflux?

I'm thirteen and I have very bad stomach issues. I have gotten them through my parents because they both had stomach issues as well. My mom has also been diagnosed with depression shortly before I was concieved. I was wondering if it's possible for me to have it from my mom or from my stomach problems? Is it even possible for me to get it?
----------

I've been dealing with acid reflux and a hiatal hernia for about 20 years. Thank God they came out with Prilosec and Prevacid, I used to get them way back when they were by prescription only. I also have depression but the two are not related. They are completely separate. You could have depression, it has been proven that it can be passed from a parent to a child, can run in families. At 13 you're too young to be put on antidepressant medication but at least you should be able to take the acid reducing medication I mentioned above if you aren't already. Good luck and I hope things improve for you, you have your whole life ahead of you still, many, many good things to come.  (+ info)

Can you treat a hiatal hernia on your own?

Is it possible to relax and massage the muscles carefully and bring things back to normal? A friend of mine says she did it!

DON'T TELL ME TO GO TO THE DOCTOR BECAUSE WE ARE, BUT IT IS THE WEEKEND.
----------

Well you can't do anything to treat the hiatal hernia on your own. Since you already know to go to the doctor (by the way how do you know you have a hiatal hernia?), you are probably interested in decreasing some of the symptoms related to reflux.

Losing weight (if overweight but you can't do that in a weekend obviously), avoiding alcohol, chocolate, citrus juice, and tomato-based products and avoiding large meals in general. Wait 3 hours after a meal before lying down and elevate the head of the bed 8 inches when you do.

Can't give you info for pharmacologic therapy (not a good idea online). But if you are really hurting, I suggest calling your physician.  (+ info)

Can a Hiatal Hernia heal without surgury?

I've been on Prilosec for 2 years. 2 pills a day or I cannot swallow. I don't have insurance to see a doctor. At this time.
----------

I think it is like any other hernia. It is a weakened muscle in the throat that causes an out-pouching of the esophagus. Prilosec just helps with the acid as far as I know. I don't have a job or insurance either. Can you call the public health department near you and see if they have free or low cost health clinics. And your medicine you can get help with for free or low cost at http://www.pparx.org (Montel advertises it on TV).

Sometimes if the hiatal hernia gets big enough, it can press on the heart too. Some hospitals can sometimes give free care to patients with no insurance and low income.  (+ info)

Minnesota Chiropractor to adjust hiatal hernia?

Hello, I'm looking for a chiropractor in the Twin Cities, Minnesota area who has a lot of experience adjusting hiatal hernias. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
----------

Hi Tanya. Ignore the "skeptical doc". He doesn't know what he is talking about. I am a retired Chiropractor and I have helped many patients with hiatal hernias and I have personally been helped with my own hiatal hernia.

I don't know any docs in the Twin Cities, but you may want to look for doctors trained in either Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) or Applied Kinesiology (AK).

Best wishes and good luck.  (+ info)

what does the pain induced from a hiatal hernia feel like specifically?

I have Laryngeal reflux, post nasal drip, constant cough, food regurgitation, and a horrible chest pain that comes like a muscle strain and then disipates. It almost feels similar to pain endured with costeochondritis.
----------

Sorry my earlier answer was just the malware warning for one post now deleted.

I can't help you much with that pain as I am not familiar with the two you mention.

However, if the pain you are feeling is just below the sternum it MAY be related to the post nasal drip. and reflux.

Have a look at the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. See how many you are experiencing. If that is a possibility then you might ask your doctor for an anti-spasmodic. Also you could try taking Codeine to block that pain. If Codeine is effective it would usually only work if you take it at the first sign of pain, otherwise you need a very high dose.

Stress might also be a factor if your health is making you feel stressed too. I probably won't look in on this threads again, so please email me if you want to discuss further.  (+ info)

How do you heal a hiatal hernia without surgery?

I have trouble when I eat with the food not wanting to go all the way down and I get really bad heart burn.
----------

I've got one too and have since '89.
No non-surgical procedures yet to help it heal back.
I too have experienced the shutdown in peristalysis (swallowing) that you spoke of. Next time it happens to you, excuse yourself and go somewhere private and do some jumping jacks. The gravity will help guide the food down your esophagus.

There are certain foods that I have discovered over time to avoid.
Yellow rice (saffron), is the worse. Be sure to chew hot dogs and chicken very well before swallowing and regulate the size of your bites. Heck, do that with everything you eat.

To take care of the indigestion and heartburn, the fastest treatment I've got is a teaspoon of baking soda in 8oz of cool water. Gulp it down and walk around for a couple of minutes. You can't sit down, you must walk for it to work. The soda neutralizes the acid in your stomach and creates one helluva burp. But it does the trick!  (+ info)

What is a hiatal hernia and what type of treatment is needed?

The esophagus travels through a hole in the diaphragm and connects to the stomach. A hiatal hernia occurs when the top of the stomach starts to move upward, and go through that hole. Some people don't notice them, but others experience a lot of pain and heartburn. If it isn't causing any trouble, they don't necessarily need to be repaired. You can sit upright to alleviate some of the heartburn. If the pain is severe, however, you may want to have surgery to repair the hernia.  (+ info)
