Do I need to get my umbilical hernia repaired?

I was born with an umbilical hernia and have had it for quite some time, as i am now 16. If the hernia has not caused me any problems, would surgery not be necessary?

Dude this is definitely a question for your Dr :he can help you decide what to do:leave it be or operate.

what problems could my babies umbilical hernia be causing?

could my 9 week old babies umbilical hernia be causing problems with digestion of some kind of blockage. it pops back in with no problem, as the normal signs of a blockage would be if it could not be pushed back in?
----------

Umbilical hernias are very common in newborn babies, but you shouldn't dismiss them as non-issues. I've read that loops of intestine can get caught in them? If they don't heal I would be a bit concerned.

Should I be concerned that my daughter was born with an umbilical hernia?

I gave birth to a beautiful girl on September 27th of this year. Well, she was born with an umbilical hernia. Her pediatrician at first, said if it didn't resolve on its own, she would have to see a pediactric surgeon. Now, she is saying it is normal and she could have it all the way up until she is 3 or 4 years old. I was thinking about getting a second opinion?! Has anyone else had a baby with this?? What should I do?? Is it that serious?? Thanks!!
----------

my little girl (5 months) had big one since birth, they told me same thing, if she still has it at 3-4 then operation is needed. IT will go away once her stomach muscles begin to tighten as she sits up and stuff.....my little girls went away over like 3 days, one day it was there then the next it was gone...at about 3 months old  (+ info)

After Umbilical Hernia surgery, how long can I expect the pain to last?

I just had umbilical hernia surgery and it went well, but the recovery is painful. I had the type of surgery where a mat or screen is placed in front of the hernia or weakness. It's all done Orthoscopically. So I have my orthoscopic incisions and there are some sort of metalic looking fasteners that attach the mesh to my peritineium.

So, 4 or 5 days of pain? Is that reasonable?
----------

4 to 5 days is fairly reasonable, but the pain should have lessened over time. Maybe you have an infection from the mesh. Report to your doctor or surgeon  (+ info)

Would you need surgery for an umbilical hernia?

I have a relative who is a midaged female who has had four previous pregnancies and had been working for a while and then recently had a small lump protruding from near the umbilical cord. It isn't painful and it is very small. She was told it was hernia. What do you guys advise?
----------

The individual should consider having an umbilical hernia repair. It's a fairly straight forward surgery in which the surgeon will identify the hernia sac, separate it from the surrounding tissue, and push it back into the abdominal cavity. Umbilical hernias are common in adults, but overweight individuals and those who have just finished a pregnancy term are most at risk for them. If left without treatment, the umbilical hernia will get larger in size over time. Also, abdominal contents including fat and intestines can get stuck in the hernia and cannot be pushed back in, causing further pain. It can lead to nausea, vomiting, and even the blood supply being compromised.

Not everyone needs surgery on an umbilical hernia however. If it can be reduced without surgery, or pushed back in without surgery, then surgery might be able to be delayed for some time, all though eventually surgery will likely be needed.  (+ info)

How bad is an umbilical hernia in an adult?

I really think my husband has an umbilical hernia...it is like his belly button has turned inside out and is protruding out. It will not go back in when it is pushed on. It is really big. He will NOT go to a doctor and it is irritating me. What to do? What to say? How bad could it get?
----------

It's kind of unusual to find one in an adult. They're a common pediatric problem, but they usually resolve without problems around the age of three or four. Otherwise, they're repaired surgically. In an adult, the big worry would be strangulation of the bowel, which has the potential to be very serious, even fatal. I would try the old "Honey, I'm worried about you" approach and encourage him to see a doctor. Do some research on the Web and arm yourself with as much info as you can find before you talk to him.  (+ info)

Could I have ruined my umbilical hernia surgery?

Hi. I recently had umbilical hernia surgery on the 28th of January. I was told to avoid lifting anything over 10 pounds for the first two weeks, however, I am a single mom of a 7 month old who weighs 19 pounds. I've been staying with my parents so they can help out with him, but there have been times I had to pick him up and carry him around. Could this have ruined my surgery? And if it did, what are the signs?
----------

Unless you had some serious sudden pain when you lifted him I'm sure it's fine. I had umbilical hernia surgery and I have three kids. I did my share of lifting and I'm just fine. If you do start to have more pain in that area go back to the doctor.  (+ info)

What's the difference between an outie and an umbilical hernia?

Both my boys have what the doctor is calling umbilical hernias. My older son's is pretty big, and she thinks he will probably have to have surgery in a couple years; my younger son's isn't too bad. I'm just wondering what the difference is, if any.
Thanks.
----------

A hernia means there is a hole in the muscle wall allowing stuff to poke out, usually the intestines.
