What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?

I always see commercials about Type 1 and 2 diabetes, what are they exactly and what causes them? Please help!
----------

In a nutshell, type I diabetes is thought to be an autoimmune disorder in which the beta cells of the pancreas stop producing insulin. Type II diabetes comes from insulin resistance and is usually seen in older, overweight patients whose pancreas is working. Type II diabetes is preventable through proper diet and lifestyle, but type I is not preventable at this time. Maybe we will learn more in time so that type I diabetes can be prevented as well.  (+ info)

Type 1 diabetes and I want to get a breast implant is it safe?

I have type 1 diabetes and I want to get a breast job. Do you think it is ok for me to go through the procedure?
----------

It's safe so long as the medical/nursing staff as completely aware of your condition and take this into consideration when performing the procedure. This means providing you with appropriate IV fluids when you are fasting for surgery, checking your BMs regularly and ensuring you receive your insulin when needed.   (+ info)

How you can and cant spread herpes type 1?

I am a 20 year old female, and I have just recently been diagnosed with Herpes type 1. I am positive I caught it from my girlfriend, who had a cold sore when we had oral sex. Now I know our crotches obviously cant touch, but my question is, if we had unprotected oral sex again, would she be able to catch my Herpes type 1? Or no?
----------

okay since you got hsv-1 from her coldsore then you are very unlikely to spread it to her, because she already has antibodies to fight any other hsv-1 infection in a different location... and having genital hsv-1 occurs so rarely that it makes it very rare for it to spread if someone has it genitally... i wouldn't be worried because she already has hsv-1, just in a different location... and as i said she has antibodies to fight it off from aquiring it genitally  (+ info)

Is there a difference in dietary requirements between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes sufferers?

There seem to be cookbooks that are specific to Type 2 diabetes. Does this mean there's a difference in the kind of diet that Type 1 and Type 2 sufferers need to follow?
----------

There is a lot of difference between the diet of all diabetics.

We have different tolerances to certain carb / protein / fat combo's.

Type 2's can vary so much. Some people can control it with a very strict diet, others can have a less strict one with tablets.

Type 1's can have a lot less of a strict diet, we learn to adjust our insulin to our carbs, just like a normal pancreas would work.
Insulin is given either via injections or a pump.

I've been type 1 since i was 9. I have very good control, and i self-medicate, like most type 1's learn to.
I can eat mostly anything, apart from the obvious, like a load of sweets, 3 pizza's etc.

Any 'specific' cookbooks are usually rubbish.
Type 2 diabetics can vary a huge amount with their medications, their dietary requirements.
There is no 'diet' that works for everyone.  (+ info)

What are the best ways to reduce the risk of getting type 1 diabetes?

I'm really scared that I'm going to get type 1 diabetes. I match two of the symtoms of it: extreem hunger and fatigue. Type 1 diabetes runs in my family, my sister, and great grandparents had it.
----------

If it runs in your family, you should probably go and get tested for it.
Other symptoms that I experienced include frequent thirst, frequent bathroom visits-like every hour and you feel like you can't hold it if you want to-, and vomiting after a high carb and high sugar meal-such as a chocolate shake and McDonald's for me-, and extreme weight loss.
You can go to your doctor so they can check your urine, no blood drawn. Please, don't wait. DIabetes is very serious but don't be scared, your doctors can offer all kinds of support.  (+ info)

How soon after exposure to cold sore herpes (type 1) in your genital area, would you start to see symptoms?

I think I may have contracted genital herpes through my partner's cold sore. It was not totally active at the time- it had already scabbed over and was almost healed. He has never had genital herpes and this is the only thing I can attribute it to. Does this now mean I could have type 1 or type 2 herpes?
----------

first YES you do get genital herpes from oral sex if your partner has a cold sore (hsv 1). Once you have come in contact with hsv1 on you genital area, you will then have hsv2 or genital herpes. it generally takes 14 days or more if you are going to have an outbreak. some people dont have an outbreak. you can go to you primary physician to get a blood test to check for hsv 1 &2. good luck  (+ info)

What's a quick easy way to distinguish between type 1 and 2 diabetes not using age of onset?

What's something from the patient's history and/or investigations one can perform to accurately distinguish between type 1 and 2 diabetes?
Thanks jojo. These are all supportive information which increase the likelihood of diagnosing type 1 as oppose to type 2. What would be a feature in history and/or investigation that could tell them apart clearly and definitely?
something practical and not excessively invasive (ie. not to do a biopsy) to be performed on an average person.
----------

There is not much in the history or physical examination that will be of assistance. The symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes over-lap. Family history is typically of little value. In twin studies, if one twin develops type 1 diabetes there is a 50% probability that the other twin will develop type 1 diabetes. The specific genetic markers have been identified, but it is not know if you have such genes, what the probability of subsequent diabetes is. For type 2 diabetes the genetic link is stronger, but the genes have not been identified, and it is presumed to be poly-genetic. Family history should imply 'first degree relatives', meaning father, mother, brother, sister, and children. Age is of little benefit, other than to say that diagnosis before age 10 is almost invariably type 1, and that diagnosis after age 40 is usually type 2. A type 2 diabetic never becomes at a later date type 1 diabetes as someone has suggested. The answer to your question is a simple blood test. Type 1 diabetics do not produce insulin, but type 2 diabetics do produce insulin. I most commonly order a C-peptide which is a substance 'cleaved' off of insulin as it changes from pancreatic storage of pre-insulin to insulin. It is also possible to measure the insulin level. The latter is not quite a specific as the normal range is quite broad. (Initially, type 1 diabetics still produce a small amount of insulin). I wish you the very best of health and may God bless.  (+ info)

How much has type 1 diabetes hindered your life?

My little brother is a type 1 and I feel so bad for him. He's only 11 years old, but I'm so worried about him not having a normal life with regard to friends, dating etc.

What have your experiences been like?
----------

I've been diabetic for 13 years.

I'm married, with a baby, and I'm also0 a qualified ski instructor.

It hasn't hindered me in any way, because I refuse to let it.

I went heli-skiing, bungee jumping, and plan on going sky diving next year.

Help him to take care of himself. Don't make him, but help him to understand what is going on with his body, and how he can take care of it.

Let him know he'll be fine.  (+ info)

What happens if i am diagnosed with type 1 diabetes?

Will I have to go to the hospital if I am diagnosed with type 1 diabetes? If so, what will i do there? Will they just teach me how to control my diabetes? Will they just monitor me? Will they do anything that hurts to me besides insulin injections, and checking my blood sugar?
----------

i'm not quite sure why you're asking this if you haven't even been diagnosed. did your doctor tell you he suspects you have t1? there is no way that a doctor would tell you that and then simply send you home without insulin or education. you don't even know if you have it, you don't claim to have any symptoms, and yet you're jumping to conclusions. take it one step at a time instead of freaking out over this. oh, and you DON'T need a catheter unless you are severely ill, unconscious, or physically unable to void on your own. stop obsessing over this...it's not healthy!  (+ info)

What is the incubation period of Neurofibromatosis Type 1?

This is for a school project, and i need info on neurofibromatosis type 1! Please post sites and info on the history of it and the incubation period. Also i need the transmission, diagnosis, treatment, and how to avoid it! Thanks. Email me info too.
----------

its a genetically inherited disease so it does not have any incubation period. There is no treatment, and you can't avoid it. You can transmit it either - you inherit it.  (+ info)
