Whats the difference between type 1 diabetes and type 2?

Hi everyone.
My boss just found out her 16 year old daughter has type 1 diabetes. We were all very sad to hear the news. Apparently she will be taking medication everyday for the rest of her life and she has a strict diet to follow. What's the difference between type 1 and type 2? Also, do people with diabetes have a tendency to be thin and lose a lot of weight because of their diet? Apparently before she was diagnosed, she lost 10 pounds within a month.

Thanks!

Type one is usually diagnosed early in life, from birth to around the age of 30. There are many theories on why and what happens to the pancreas in type 1. It is thought to be a viruse that attacks it at some point. There are more cases of type 1 in states that have cold weather. These people are always insulin dependent and must inject insulin sometimes up to 6 times a day. The pancreas does not make any (or very little) insulin. In type 2, it is usually diagnosed after the age of 35, but can develop earlier. With this type there are 2 things that can happen. The pancreas can be making lots of insulin but the body is not using it correctly (this is insulin resistance) or the pancreas is not making enough insulin. People with type 2 usually have to take some type or oral meds, but some take insulin, and some take both. There are some type 2's that can control their disease with diet and exercise for many years. Both types of diabetes can be genetic. Both types are caused by malfunctions of the pancreas and are not caused by the wrong diet, or being overweight. Both types of diabetics need to get daily exercise and watch their diets.  (+ info)

What type of doctor is most needed for volunteer type work?

I am wanting to be a doctor. The main reason is not because I want to make a lot of money. My main reason is that it will give me the opportunity to help people. I want to know what type of doctor is needed the most in the world for service?
----------

It depends on where you go! No matter what you decide to specialize in, you'll be able to help out if you put time into doing a little research into the various organizations out there. However, I'll list a couple specialties off the top of my head and give examples what they can do.

Orthopedic surgery: trauma broken bones, congenital skeletal problems, etc.

General surgery: general trauma, primarily abdominal

Family doctors: on the ground providing triage and primary care  (+ info)

what type of store would I go to for cupcake toppings?

I wanted to make cupcakes with my niece this weekend and I want to have sprinkles, icing and some type of toppings. Like butterflies, cartoon faces, toys... just some type of hard toppings to put on top of them other than the same numbers and letters that u see in the grocery store. Do cake bakery's have/sell these toppings?
----------

Yes ... and some Super Walmarts also have these as well as grocery stores. The fancier they are; the more likely a specialty store.

Good luck and have lots of fun!!  (+ info)

What type of coffee grinders are in grocery stores?

I read on this site that a 'burr' style of coffee grinder should be used over a 'blade' type to get a more consistent grind. What type of grinder is usually used in the gourmet coffee section of the grocery store where you grind your own beans?
----------

I worked in retail grocery and it is a plate grinder, like in a flour processing plant, it uses to metal grinding wheels, and rubs the beans, by adjusting the plates it allows you to make it coarse or extra fine for Espesso or Turkish, most places the plates are old and tend to be a bit off, so if you want fine for a drip, then dial it up to extra fine.

The home type are more a blender single blade, or the one I have which has a resevoir it is the wheel type.  (+ info)

What type of mashed potatoes are the trend in restaurants in your area: instant from box or home made type?

We only have 2 restaurants, out of at least 30, serving the home made type. One is a Diner and the other is a local Mom and Pop. I don't like paying a lot of money anywhere-especially the fancier places, for instant mashed potatoes. It's getting the same with gravy and other items too. What fun is eating out when the food is not fresh prepared?
----------

I wouldn't set foot in a restaurant that served instant mashed potatoes. God knows what other crap they would serve their customers.  (+ info)

whats type of icing do they use to make cakes?

like what type of icing do they use to make cakes that you buy? like that you would find at a cake shop and stuff, i think its butter cream... how do you make the type of icing they use?
----------

Buttercream Frosting
Makes about 1-1/2 cups frosting

Ingredients
3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
3 to 4 tablespoons milk, divided
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine powdered sugar, butter, 2 tablespoons milk and vanilla in large bowl. Beat with electric mixer on low speed until blended. Beat on high speed until light and fluffy, adding more milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, as needed for good spreading consistency

CLARIBEL'S STABILIZED WHIP CREAM

1 tsp. plain gelatin
2 tbsp. cold water
1 c. whipping cream
3 tbsp. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Add gelatin to cold water in small pan. Set this over boiling water until it is clear. Do not stir. Cool to room temperature. Meanwhile whip the cream until it is medium thick. Pour gelatin mixture into the center of cream while mixer is going. Pour in the gelatin all at once and continue beating. Add powdered sugar and vanilla. Beat until cream stands in stiff peaks. Use as frosting for cakes or dessert decoration.

Wilton Buttercream Icing
1 cup solid vegetable shortening
1/2 teaspoon butter extract
2 tablespoons milk
4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar

Cream shortening with electric mixer. Add butter extract. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Keep icing covered with a damp cloth until ready to use.

For best results, keep icing bowl in refrigerator when not in use. Refrigerated in an airtight container, this icing can be stored 2 weeks. Re-whip before using.  (+ info)

What type of mortar and pestle would you recommand using and why?

I use a lot of herbs for cooking and spellcraft. A number of recipes require that I pound the herbs with a mortar and pestle to release its aroma and flavor. So, I am thinking about purchasing them. However, I know that they are made using different types of materials - including wood and glass. For someone that is planning on using these tools on multiple occasions for multiple reason what type of mortar and pestle would you recommend that I purchase?
----------

The marble ones....they are long lasting and durable.  (+ info)

What type of cork should I use for corking beer?

Homebrewer; would like to cork beer instead of cap it. What type of cork and where can I buy it. Also, what type of tool do I use to make the cork mushroom like a champane cork. Thanks!
----------

You're setting yourself up for a lot of expense and trouble. But, apparently, that's what you want.

Try Orchard Supply Hardware. I've seen cappers there, so they should carry corkers, also. Orchard is also a source for corks. You're on your own with the "mushroom" cork. I've never corked a sparkling wine. I and a wine making friend use caps. On his wine, though, he uses corks.

The last I checked, a capper was around $50, and a corker was around $200. The corks run double to quadruple the cost for caps. If you still want to cork, and are reluctant to pay that much for a corker, go to a wine making supply shop. They rent out equipment (including corkers) for a reasonable cost.  (+ info)
