Ichthyosis Vulgaris - How do you deal with it?

Do you have this? How severe is it? How do you deal with it during the cold winter? What is the best remedy you have so far?
----------

WebMd has some links for treatment of this scaly disease. I do not personally know the best remedy. I would pull it up and read everything I can on the internet.  (+ info)

I have Ichthyosis vulgaris. What should I do? I want to have normal life at work.?

Is taking Glutathione supplements could help my skin condition?
----------

I had to look up your skin condition to know what it is. You have lived with this condition and by now should know how to control it and get medical attention when you need it. I also have a skin condition (psoriasis) that covers most of my body. The severity comes and goes, especially with times of great stress or illness and healthy times. Sometimes it is very noticeable and sometimes it is not. Sometimes it itches intensely and other times it just looks bad. I do have a normal life at work but sometimes I have to educate others on my condition so that they understand it is not contagious and there is no cure for it (it just looks bad and itches sometimes.) I smile a lot and go out of my way to be nice to others. People notice and appreciate me.....not my skin. I hope this helps. As far as the supplement you are considering taking, I can't give you any feedback. Maybe you can also post your question in the family section and in the business section to get even more suggestions to help you. Remember, God gave you your skin condition for a reason....look beyond your skin to who you are underneath and see others in the same way! God bless you.  (+ info)

Can homeopathy cure Ichthyosis Vulgaris. Does anyone of you know a good homeopathic skin doctor in hyderabad.?

It's possible. No supplement can claim it WILL cure any disease because it really depends on what's causing the illness in the first place.

Now, there are some things that help with general skin health and may help with that. Vitamin E and Aloe Vera are the best and most natural way to help with skin health externally and in many cases, healing damaged skin. Vitamin E creams don't have a very high potency of it, and most companies won't sell a straight vitamin E oil in a high enough concentration because it can build up in your system (if you take too high of a dose) and become toxic over time. That's why you should make sure you aren't taking a supplemental vitamin E at the same time. With Aloe Vera, you can just rub it on whatever areas need the soothing... and you can use a good cup or two a day safely if needed.

One of the best ways for smaller areas of damage is to take a 400 IU softgel of vitamin E, poke a hole in the side of it (CAREFULLY), spread the oil on your skin, and rub it in like any massage oil. Make sure you use about an equal amount on each area of your face, as you should only do this once a day.

That's your best bet for external use (which is faster to heal the skin), but there are a lot of internal things you can use as well. There's Fish Oil (which I use for my skin problems), Biotin, Silica (available naturally in Horsetail herb), MSM, and Hyaluronic Acid among the most popular items. Different people have different reactions to those different ingredients, so it's hard to say what may help most for you. I've personally taken Biotin (which helps for a lot of people), but it was too powerful for me, so it shows how different people can be.

As far as your second question, I'm not even sure where Hyderabad is.... but you should be able to look in your local phone book or directory.... or you could ask for a referal from your local doctor or skin doctor. Good luck!  (+ info)

i have ichthyosis vulgaris (milder form), can anybody tell how to manage it on day-to-day basis..?

Exterior areas of my arms and legs have more pronounced signs of scaliness...what products i can use to clear the scaliness and to maintain normal skin for at least 8 hours a day...pls provide any product names...
----------

If you know what you have, chances are that you already know what these people are telling you. I myself have Icthyosis and I deal with it using a lotion called Lac-Hydrin. It's worked for me for a long time and accelerates the peeling while moisturizing and concealing the affected skin at the same time. Once the peeling is over, my skin can stay clear for up to two weeks at a time. I don't know if it's still a perscription formula but if it isn't I think you can order it online.

PS. The stuff I use is 12 percent lactic acid  (+ info)

My fiance has X-linked recessive ichthyosis does this mean I could now carry the condition?

Obviously I mean is it sexually transmitted, or does he just carry it and it would be passed down to our children? I know it is passed down through the females, but I don't know much more.
----------

No you won't get it. However, if you have the recessive gene as well, you run the risk of having children with the disease.  (+ info)

What do doctors usually look for during skin biopsy when they are examining for icthyosis vulgaris?

I need to know. Someone help me. they do look for specific bacteria?
----------

Icthyosis vulgaris is usually a clinical diagnosis. That means that the diagnosis can be made just by looking at and feeling the skin and listening to the history of how long it has been present and so on. If a biopsy were done on icthyosis they would look for the way cells were arranged and how they affected each other. It is not a bacterial infection. See aad.org  (+ info)

Why are people born with Harlequin type ichthyosis disease born with red eyes?

and can they see through them?
----------

It is a rare genetic skin disorder. The trait is thought to be autosomal recessive; ie, the defect is on a non-sex chromosome, and the condition will only manifest if both parents contribute this defective gene.

The red eyes, you are thinking of harlequin ichthyosis foetalis
Because the foetus's eyes are highly susceptible to trauma, they often bleed upon birth, thus giving them the bulbous red-eye appearance. Their eyes need to be continually protected using ophthalmic lubricants

The babies can see and with modern medicine many have made it into adulthood.  (+ info)

Is there any treatment for the skin disease Pemphigus Vulgaris? How can pain from the blisters be mitigated?

I have been suffering from this disease for the last 5 years. The blisters come in all seasons. Sometimes they will come one after the other. Sometimes there will be a gap of one to two months. At a time two to three may also be there. They come mostly on the legs, thighs, buttocks and around the genital organ. It starts as a small tip, grows further until it bursts when puss and blood come out. Scars are left at the place. The blisters irritate me and interefere with my daily activities as the pain until they are cleared becomes unberable. The skin specialist whom I consulted said there is no cure and there is no medicine even for the pain. I take pain killers with the risk of the side effects involved. Is not there any treatment for this diseaase? Is there any traditional method of mitigating the pain from the blisters apart from taking antibiotics/pain killers? Experts in skin diseases or those who suffer from the same disease may please help me by sharing their knowledge/views.
----------

I'm sorry to hear that you are suffering. Since Pemphigus is an autoimmune disease, any treatment that supresses the over response of your immune system will improve your symptoms. Following a macrobiotic diet will signifigantly improve your immune function and it's simple to try. I've suffered for years myself with autoimmune issues untill i started following this diet and I am healthier than i ever have been. Conventional medicine is often nothing but a mask for symptoms, but lifestyle change gets at the cause of the problem. Good luck  (+ info)

I am looking for either conventional or herbal treatments for Pemphigus vulgaris?

I would like to know if there is perhaps a diet that would help improve the issue or avoid because it might agitate the condition.

what is the diagnosis of pemphigus vulgaris?

I had biopsy last week & want to know the diagnosis of pemphigus vulgaris can you please help me ?
Thanx in advance
----------

Pemphigus vulgaris is a very rare autoimmune disease. It typically begins in the mouth and can spread to other parts of your body. It is a blistering disease where you can get a number of very sore lesions. Your body is attacking some of the cell membranes of your skin which causes your skin to lose cell adhesion. The resulting blister is the equivalent of a burn and is just as painful. The age of onset of the disease is typically in your 50's but can occur in children as well. The cause is unknown. It affects people of all races but seems to be slightly higher in Jewish populations and populations from the Mediterranean region.

You will probably be prescribed high doses of corticosteroids and probably immunosuppressive drugs depending on the severity of the disease. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy might also be used depending on your response to the other drugs.

Vitamins such as calcium and vitamin D will probably be recommended to counteract potential side effects of the steroids.

Many doctors do not know a whole lot about this disease due to its rarity. I would suggest you locate a dermatologist who has experience with it. Many of the references you will find on the web are out of date and therefore only somewhat useful.  (+ info)
