if you stop smoking will the hardening of the arteries caused by arteriosclerosis go away?

I have smoked for five years, and all of a sudden i'm noticing i'm having problems getting and maintaining full-on erections. i read that smoking constricts blood vessels and causes artherosclerosis, both of which can make achieving and sustaining an erection difficult. if i quit smoking today, will my circulation and any hardening of my arteries that may have taken place go back to normal, thus allowing normal erectile function??
----------

Eventually, yes. But I'm betting there are outside causes other than smoking. Quit smoking, change your diet and activity level and you'll see your penis function return to normal.

How does High Blood Pressure relate to Arteriosclerosis?

Some of the same biochemical processes that cause hypertension contribute to Atherosclerosis. See below.

Cytokines — Cytokines play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis [51,68]. The release of proinflammatory cytokines is stimulated by LDL modification, free radical formation, hemodynamic stress, hypertension, and infection. These cytokines, especially interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, have a multitude of atherogenic effects. They enhance the expression of cell surface molecules such as ICAM-1, VCAM-1, CD40, CD40L, and selectins on endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and macrophages. Pro-inflammatory cytokines can also induce cell proliferation, contribute to the production of reactive oxygen species, stimulate matrix metalloproteinases, and induce tissue factor expression. Other cytokines, such as interleukin-4 and interleukin-10, are antiatherogenic. Still others, such as interferon-g, have a variety of actions with both pro- and anti-atherogenic consequences. (See "Pathogenesis of plaque rupture in acute coronary syndromes", sections on Inflammation and Metalloproteinases).  (+ info)

Is it true that drinking coconut juice in the middle of practicing sports results in arteriosclerosis?

Coconut juice is full of oil and very fattening too. I would not drink much, if any.  (+ info)

Can you tell me about the positive and negative of Chelation Therapy for Arteriosclerosis?

The positive side is that it is an excellent profit center for physicians.

The negative side is that it's not medically effective. There's an excellent article on quackwatch.com that discusses it. Mentioned in the article is that the group that promotes it, ACAM, still doesn't provide some clinical information to its practitioners such as criteria for determining: (1) who should be treated, (2) how much treatment should be given, or (3) how to tell whether the treatment is working.
There is no evidence from over the past 40 years that chelation modifies the disease process at all. The only "evidence" are anecdotal stories, and that carries zero weight in scientific or medial research, where numbers and facts are used to prove that something works or is quackery.

You'll also note that insurance doesn't cover it for treatment of arteriosclerosis, just as it doesn't cover shaking chicken bones and chanting.  (+ info)

Anyone ever heard of Intracranial Pressure?

It's pressure on the brain. If you are treated with a lumbar puncture, does that cure it or is it just a temporary relief? I suppose I'm hoping there's a doctor or medical student out there who might read this! My husband may have this. He now has swelling of the optic nerves, headaches, blepharospasm and glaucoma, and dizziness.

Can CT scan of the head show elevated intracranial pressure?

Yes. One can recognise the squashed brain quite easily on the CT scan.  (+ info)

why does increased intracranial pressure can cause manifestation like projectile vomiting?

The brain is suspeneded in your cranium by cranial fluid. Temperatures in the brain have to be maintained within 3 degrees or you will die. THere is a very delicate balance in your cranium, and increased pressure can throw all of it off, leading to unpleasant condition, such as vomiting, seizures, and blackouts.  (+ info)

does anyone have info on mammary arteriosclerosis?

My aunt was just diagnosed and I can't find anything on the 'Net to keep her from freaking out.
p.s. my aunt is in South America and wanted a description in layman's terms... thanks so much!
thanks Ashley, she's an educated woman who certainly knows how to talk to her doctor... mom and I just wanted to help her calm down but I'm not sure of the reason for the dr's visit.
----------

Well, arteriosclerosis is hardening of the arteries. So this means a hardening of the artery in the breast. Has she not discussed this with her doctor?? He really should be the one to go over her treatment options with her. You will not find anyone on the Internet who can give you medical advice about this.

Depending on how severe the blockage is, she may need to have surgery. That will be up to the doctor to determine.

In the meantime, there are things she can do to help herself become more healthy. These things include following a proper balanced diet that's low in fat and cholesterol, getting regular exercise, and if she smokes, to stop smoking.

Here's a link to read up more about arteriosclerosis.

I would advise against listening to anyone who tells you this is not serious, as the next poster has stated. Only a doctor can determine how serious the condition it is, and it would be malpractice for even a doctor to comment on the seriousness of your aunt's case over the Internet without a physical examination in person.  (+ info)

What are the treatments available for Arteriosclerosis?

Arteriosclerosis refers to the thickening of the walls of the arteries. Arteriosclerosis is usually preceded by atherosclerosis, a kind of fatty infiltration in the inner lining of the blood vessel walls. The coronary vessels of the heart and the arteries of the brain are particularly vulnerable. Beet root juice is particularly effective in regulating the cholesterol and thus preventing arteriosclerosis. Beetroot juice helps to dissolve the fat deposits in the blood vessels resolving the condition of Arteriosclerosis.
