How long does the iron take to raise blood levels?

I've been on cancer therapy for 11 months & have 3 months to go. It's getting extremely touchy and I absolutely must get my red cell count up. I'm allergic to the shots they usually give cancer patients. I am trying iron - now for 3 weeks and I think I'm taking as much as my system can tolerate, but so far, the levels are not improving. Has anyone used iron supplements for this same reason? And, what has been your experience. I simply cannot be taken off treatment.
----------

Try adding known food sources of iron to your diet as this can speed up your absorption rate. Blackstrap molasses is an excellent source so you can eat a tablespoon daily. Eating calf liver once a week is an excellent source. I actually got to where I enjoyed eating liver and sweet onions once a week. The local organic grocery would get in fresh no-chemical or antibiotic calf liver once a week and I'd always buy it when fresh so ask the butcher what day they receive their liver shipment. All organ meats are high in iron in case you like chicken gizzards or sweetmeats.

Here is a good web page for identifying food sources of iron. Scroll down to see the section related to iron.

Also taking vitamin C with meals will raise your absorption of iron from meals but check with your oncologist first because vitamin C is contraindicated with some chemo and radiation regimens. good luck  (+ info)

What does iron do for me during the teenage years?

Just curious. Does iron do anything during the teenage years? If so, what? Also, what other nutrients are MOST essential during these years? Where can I find them? What do they help with?
----------

The mineral iron is especially important in the production of red blood cells. Typically if some is anemic, their iron level is low. Iron is naturally occurring in foods where they are absorbed better by the body. Other important nutrients would be your A, B, C and D minerals.  (+ info)

What is the difference in the enfamil with iron and the enfamil premium?

Is it just doesn't have the same amount of iron? And also the enfamil iron, could the iron in that be giving my son gas. He is very gassy and fussy when awake for the most part. Curious if switching to the premium might help this
----------

They are essentially the same thing. Enfamil Premium is mostly a marketing product to increase their sales. Enfamil Premium has the same amount of iron ans the other, but it's marketed differently to make you think that it's more like breastmilk and better for Baby. It may have more DHA and ARA than their other formulas, but objective studies (ones not sponsored by Enfamil) show that neither are beneficial for babies unless they actually come from breastmilk. The plant based sources that they use in the formula don't show any benefit, and in some studies have shown detriment.

Newborns are just gassy, and sometimes they're gassy because they're fussy rather than fussy because they're gassy. Gassiness in newborns is very normal. Their digestive system is pretty much the only thing that they haven't had time to practice using while in utero. He learned how to move his body and breath and swallow, but he is just now able to get used to more than amniotic fluid.  (+ info)

What curling iron do you recommend for celebrity style curls?

I want celebrity style curls. Which curling iron is the best, and not impossible to use?
----------

I just asked a girl form work with perfect curls this Q the other day! She's spanish... has looooong black hair and she curls her hair mid way all the way to the end, like how Jessica Simpson does it.
She says she buys them from Hot Tools.
http://www.hottools.com/
I briefly looked on their site and they have ceramic curling irons (with other elements like tourmaline and titanium - not sure what their advantages are). So if you don't want to order it from them, just get a ceramic one. I've also heard from friends that ceramic irons/straighteners work really well.

For me, I don't use curling irons... I have straight Asian hair that's like wire it's sooo straight and it sucks when I want curls. After like 5 years of trying out various things, I found out what works best for MY hair...
It's microwaveable rollers! I think my mom got them from avon. You pop each velvet roller in the microwave for like 15 seconds, and roll a section of your hair around it. The set comes in I think 16 rollers, It takes me 10 minutes to get them all on my head, then I wait another 5 or so.... and THEY REALLY LAST! It's supercurly when it comes out I have to even wet it a bit for it to straighten out a bit and even after doing that it still stays.

Hope this helps!  (+ info)

How to use a straightening iron on my hair without damaging it?

I have been straightening and curling my hair with the straightening iron and curling iron. This is all fine, except I've noticed that now my hair grows extremely slowly and I get split ends after only a few weeks. Is there anything I can do to keep my hair healthy and growing quickly again while continuing to straighten and curl my hair?
----------

sure theres a way(:
first i would get it trimmed a little
bit so you can start new,and just
to get the split ends, then i would
buy a heat protecting spray at
walmart,rite aid,walgreens,etc.
its in the hair care section, with shampoos.
and you just spray it in your hair, brush,
straighten or curl, and it will leave your
hair unharmed and soft.(:  (+ info)

Can you use your cast iron skillets on a smooth top stove?

My new stove should be here any minute, and I'm wondering if you can still use your cast iron skillets on them, or if you have to use different ones? I don't want to scratch the shiny pretty top, but I really love my cast iron.
----------

I just bought a smooth top stove as well, and I never even thought of that!

I did a search and heres some info.

It looks like the main problem would be possible scratching if you aren't careful.  (+ info)

How does iron deficiency affect the composition of blood?

I have a good friend who is diagnosed with iron deficiency, although she is getting better i want to know more about her sickness. Please answer.
----------

Iron deficiency makes it harder for your blood to provide oxygen to your body. So you could feel tired or out of breath. It's not that uncommon in women. I think, but do not know, that's it's because they have to replace the menstrual loss every month. There could be other more serious problems causing the deficiency - ask your friend about the diagnosis.

Iron-poor blood is less dense than iron-rich. When you donate blood, they'll put a drop into a special solution to see if it sinks. If it floats, there isn't enough iron. If it sinks like a rock, there's plenty.  (+ info)

How do I clean my cast iron skillet?

I have a cast iron skillet with grill bumps and a cast iron press to go with it [for paninis]. I use it all the time but I have no idea how to clean it properly. I am always left with residue and melted cheese all over it. Is there something I need to buy?
----------

How to Clean a Cast Iron Skillet
Getting Burnt-On Food Off
If you have burnt-on food on your cast iron cookware, here are some ways to clean it.
My aunt told me about these two ways:
(1) The best thing to do is to burn the skillet. If you have a fireplace (or furnace), let the coals die down and then place the skillet in the coals. It may flame up--but that's okay. Let it burn off the grease and the food. (be sure to move the skillet around in the fire so it doesn't crack). If you don't have a poker or tool to get it out, wait until the fire dies down and the coals are cool to remove it. Then wash all the ashes off and re-season the pan .

(2) If you don't have a fire, the second way to do it would be to get a pan bigger than your skillet and boil the skillet in the pan on the stove. This doesn't work as well--it might get the food off but it won't clean the skillet (black specks) entirely. Either way you do it, you'll have to re-season the skillet .

When my skillet needs it, I stick it in the self-cleaning oven when that needs to be cleaned, too. You get two birds with one stone this way; hovever, I try to never let my skillets get really, really dirty.

After seasoning the skillet the first time, and after using the skillet, I use coarse salt such as Kosher salt, and scrub it around in the skillet with a paper towel. Dump the salt and rinse the skillet in cold water. Wipe dry with a paper towel (if you still get a brown stain on the paper towel, dump more salt in and repeat the process), and then wipe a thin film of olive oil in the pan. Stick the pan in a plastic bag until ready to be used.

How To Season A Cast Iron Skillet
Here's How:
Wash skillet in hot, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
Apply a thin coating of melted shortening (Crisco, for example) or vegetable oil with a solf cloth or paper towel.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place skillet UPSIDE DOWN on top oven rack.
Place foil on a cookie sheet and place on bottom rack of oven. This will catch the drippings from the skillet.
Bake in oven for one hour.
Turn oven off. DO NOT OPEN. Allow skillet to cool down in oven (several hours). There may be a film on your cookware, this comes off after use. You will have to use it a couple times as a test.
If your skillet has burnt-on food on it, here's how to get the burnt food and black specks off.
Tips:
Clean skillet after use while still warm with hot water and a plastic scrub brush.
DO NOT put in dishwasher or wash with soap or dishwashing detergent.
Dry cast iron cookware thoroughly after washing, then spray lightly with vegetable oil (Pam, etc.) Wipe dry and store. Never store cookware with lid on; cast iron cookware needs air circulation.
Reseason cookware after cooking beans or acidic foods (such as tomatoes). Frying or cooking foods with fat content helps expedite the seasoning process.
Do not use cast iron cookware for storage of food.  (+ info)
