Are there any good home remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome? What about RX meds? Thanx

Don't start a meal with a salad, or any other kind of greens. Start with a nice carb like rice or potato. Stay away from fried foods.

Stress can make it flare up. Fiber drinks are really good. As well as lots of water.  (+ info)

How to overcome or minimise the problem of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).?

I am male of 37 and patient of constipation caused by sticky stool, termed as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
----------

I have been suffering from IBS for nearly a decade, thinking that it was just a lazy colon. I first used Cape Aloe to "get me going" and it's great because you don't get used to it like you do with laxatives. Also, I started taking probiotics. I HIGHLY recommend you do this. Last, I became a pescatarian, but still kept my seafood intake way down (by the way, I cannot tell you how many people think that I'm talking about a religion when I tell them I'm pescatarian lol). Meat doesn't digest that well, and I always felt sluggish all the time. I'm a completely different person today and I feel great because now I know what "normal" feels like again. I always preferred more natural ways to heal myself. The giving up meat part was hard, but I wouldn't go back to the way I felt for anything.  (+ info)

What are the signs of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Well, sometimes I get these really painful cramps around my belly area. (rarely) Usually I only get stomach aches when I have to make a bowel movement. I admit, I don't eat the most healthy foods but I only eat fast food once or twice a week, most times. I am a 13 year old girl by the way. I am worried that I may have IBS.

Can one suddenly develop irritable bowel syndrome?

I'm a 26 year-old male and live a healthy lifestyle- I workout 3 times a week, drink lots of water, and I absolutely love fruits. For the past couple of days I've been suffering from painful bowel movements, added with constipation, bloating, and mild abdominal pain. At first I thought it was the creatine that I recently started taking, but it's been about 4 days now and I don't see any improvment even after stopping. Please help!

It could be your diet or IBS. IBS doesnt usually just come on strong. I have ulcerative Colitis and it started slow and would just get worse. I think that you dont have to worry just yet try eating more fiber I know personaly when I work out sometimes to hard it causes my stomach to get messed up. But if it continues to do what it is doing you def need to see a doc to find out why. But dont panic just yet and if it is IBS its not the end of the world. Millions live normal lives everyday without skipping a beat. Good luck!  (+ info)

Diet and lifestyle changes
Nearly all people with IBS can be helped, but no one treatment works for everyone. Usually, with a few basic changes in diet and activities, IBS will improve over time. Here are some steps you can take to help reduce symptoms of IBS:

Avoid caffeine (found in coffee, teas and sodas).
Increase fiber in your diet (found in fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts).
Drink at least three to four glasses of water per day.
Don't smoke.
Learn to relax, either by getting more exercise or by reducing stress in your life.
Try limiting the amount of milk and cheese you consume. Eat smaller meals more often or eat smaller portions. However, if you have IBS and are concerned about your calcium intake, you can try other sources of calcium. These sources include broccoli, spinach, turnip greens, tofu, yogurt, sardines and salmon with bones, calcium-fortified orange juice and breads, calcium supplements and some antacid tablets.

Keep a record of the foods you eat so you can figure out which foods bring on bouts of IBS. Common food "triggers" of IBS are red peppers, green onions, red wine, wheat and cow's milk.

Drug treatments
Antispasmotics may be prescribed to control colon muscle spasms; but, experts are unsure that these drugs play a significant role in treating IBS. They also have side effects, such as sedation and constipation that further limit their use.
Antidiarrheal medications, such as Imodium, may help with diarrhea.
Laxatives may be useful in the short term management of constipation associated with IBS.
Bulking agents, such as psyllium, wheat bran, and corn fiber, help slow the movement of food through the digestive system and may also help relieve symptoms.
Antidepressants may also be prescribed to help relieve symptoms.
Zelnorm is available for some patients under tight restrictions. The drug was pulled from the market in March 2007 because of evidence that it raises the risk of heart attacks and stroke. But in July 2007 the FDA ruled that Zelnorm may be used by some patients in critical need of the drug who do not have heart problems. The FDA is restricting Zelnorm's use to the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in women younger than 55 who meet specific guidelines.
It is important to follow the doctor's instructions when taking IBS medications -- particularly laxatives, which can be habit forming if not used carefully.

How to diagnose IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)?

Is the only way to diagnose IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) with a endoscopy or colonoscopy?
