How do I get back into ketosis quickly?

I was on a low carb diet and lost a ton of weight. I had added healthy carbs back in as I went along and reached my goal weight. Well, I fell off the wagon and pigged out on candy and ice cream. Now I'm out of ketosis and gaining weight back. So how do I kick my metabolism back over?
----------

just get back on your diet RIGHT NOW.

when you have reached your goal weight, adopt a diet routine that is healthy but gives you all you need including an occasional treat - make it a life style, not torture.  (+ info)

Should you exercise while in ketosis on the atkins?

I started a few days ago and I can feel myself in ketosis. If I don't eat because at school I don't have a lunch I feel like my body is going to shut down on me. But now since I've eaten when I got home I feel fine. Should I still exercise even in ketosis?
----------

You can exercise lightly to burn a little extra calories. You know that your body is not running off of readily available blood sugars while your in ketosis, so it is hard to have great bursts of energy for working out, but it is possible if you do it lightly. Just make sure your eating plenty of protein (complete proteins) to keep your body from going catabolic on your muscles, and defeat your exercise.  (+ info)

What foods will break me out of ketosis?

I'm counting my carbs, and keeping it under 20g a day, as recommended on Atkins induction phase.

What will instantly break me out of ketosis, even if I stay under 20g carbs?
----------

Everyone is different, Buy ketone strips to test yourself. Also research Ketosis and low carb in your spare time, to find out dangers to avoid.  (+ info)

How long does it take to put your body into a state of ketosis?

I have been advised the quickest way of losing weight is by training your body to go into ketosis, where your body uses fat to lose weight or something like that?
----------

yeah, atkins will put you into ketosis. it usually sets in after just a few days. it's not an easy diet though and it still takes time to lose the weight.  (+ info)

What Happens to carbohydrates taken in during ketosis?

I'm a 20 year old male who has been on and off atkins. I have lost 70 lbs and kept it off for over 2-3 years, and now I've gotten back on to shed a few pounds Ive gained over the past months to get back in shape and feel good. My question is, since my body is in ketosis and is using fat for fuel, what happens if I take in for example 5-6 g. of carbs total by eating some cheese? Even though my body is in ketosis, and it's said that it will continue that way until I go above a pretty decent amount of carbs (20g is the rule of thumb given in Atkins books). Again, I'm curious as to what will happen with those carbs, and just exactly happens (I understand the process of ketosis, I just don't understand the relationship between diets that are low in fat/loads of carbs and low-carb/no fat. I always thought of it as if you mix em' you're screwed). Will the carbs I take in during ketosis be burned off as well and be negated or will they just turn to extra fat and end up being burned of anyhow?
It is a repost, and noone answered it, but I still haven't found any real description of what exactly happens. I'm interested in know what happens to carbs once they are inside a body in a state of ketosis :D thanks
----------

They will be stored in your liver and muscles. Whenever your body needs energy again the carbs in your liver will be released into the bloodstream instead of free fatty acids and ketones. Your body will never be free of carbs and rely only on fats because a certain amount of protein will be converted to glucose in the liver.
If you start eating 30 grams carbs a day you will be good. I've accidently entered ketosis at 100 g/day carbohydrates when doing alot of cardio.
Keep in mind that you don't need to count low carb vegetables like spinach, brocoli, or green beans to your total. I also have 15 grams of dextrose with my postworkout shake that I don't count toward daily total when doing keto.
As for the low/zero fat diets, they should be avoided if at all possible. Keto diets are acceptable because there is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate. There are essential proteins and essential fats though. What is more important than the amount of fat you are consuming is the type. A ratio of 1:2:1 of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated is good, omega-3 and omega-6 fats should be balanced out.  (+ info)

How long after hitting ketosis will I begin to lose weight?

I used to be a carb hog! Now I'm at day 2 on Atkins and tested pos. for ketosis this evening and I am at a dark purple. When should the weight start coming off? Is this normal (to have so much ketones) for only 2nd day? I've had the symptoms too, weakness, tired, nausea etc. ..Also I know all about the "bad affects" of ketosis and low carb diets, so I don't need to hear it again.
----------

1 to 2 weeks. It seems a bit off (to me) to test so high on the second day though. But as long as you feel comfortable and are monitoring it as to not head into Ketoacidosis you'll be fine.

Out of curiousity, have you tried following a diabetic diet before (one geared more towards hypoglycemia)? My wife is doing that currently, with better results than an Atkins or South Beach type of diet. (Though very similar in principal.)  (+ info)

What is the quickest way to get in Ketosis?

Thank you. No preaching on Ketosis, dangerous, etc, please.
----------

fasting is the quickest.

Reducing your carbohydrate intake to below 20 grams per day will do it also.  (+ info)

Is it safe to use fatty acids during ketosis as energy source for building muscle by lifting weights?

I know most bodybuilders use carbs to power their way through a workout, i was wondering if an alternative source fat energy during ketosis would work instead.
----------

Yes. Just eat them in the right ratios. Check out the site mercola .com and search for fats or whatever. Also Lyle McDonald has a book called The Ketogenic Diet. It's the most informative non biased one I have ever seen. Loads of information on how everything works in your system. http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/the-ketogenic-diet

Also its a good idea to eat carbs only directly after a workout since your blood sugar will be low and your body will turn muscle into glucose to raise your blood sugar. That's definitely a set back if your trying to put on muscle. The carbs after a workout will not be stored as fat as long as you haven't been eating carbs all day. They will go to your liver and blood stream. Eating any carbs will put you out of "ketosis" technically, but if you only eat really small portions of it through the day it should not affect it to much. But after a workout eat plenty. About 100 grams or so. If you try to go into full ketosis it will take about a week of zero carbs to get there. Also you will have to eat twice as much protein to fuel blood sugar if you go full ketosis. That's why I suggest some carbs. Even with eating small amounts of carbs your body will slowly become more efficient at burning fat for fuel eventually only portions of your brain will still need to run off of blood sugar the rest of your body will use fat, including what you have stored. I suggest you eat mostly monounsaturated fat, such as olive oil.  (+ info)

Can you build muscle by lifting weights in ketosis stage eating fats and proteins only?

I know that carbs are needed before and after a hard workout to replenish glycogen stores in muscles. But other times negate carbs and follow ketosis plan will you pack on tons of muscle in a matter of weeks?
----------

It's very very difficult to build muscle when you're on a ketogenic diet.

Protein and fats are the building blocks of muscle tissue but carbs are needed to FUEL the muscle building process.

However, you can use a targeted Ketogenic diet where you only have carbs Post workout.

So all your meals would be P/F with the PWO meal being P/C. This will give you the best of both worlds.

Matter of weeks? No. Muscle building takes years of consistency.  (+ info)
