How can kidney pain be distinguished from pain due to other causes?

This question is on the behalf of someone who has known defective kidney (but not bladder problems). The person is trying to figure out when its actually kidney pain and needs to be reported to the doctor versus a "stitch in the side" or a strained muscle.
----------

Usually kidney pain is excruciating. It hurts to stand, to sit, to lay down. Painkillers don't help. It's nothing like pulling a muscle.  (+ info)

What happens after you have kidney stones for a long time?

My mom is in the hospital right now and i feel uncomfortable about whats going to happen. She has had them for quite some time. She always complains about then. This is not the first time going to the hospital because of kidney stones. My mom also can't eat meat because of acid reflex.
----------

It honestly depends on how often and how severe her stones are. I've suffered from kidney stones off and on for a number of years, and other than a little damage to my right kidney, I'm fine. I also went to school with a guy who got them so severely that he needed a kidney transplant. His were the size of golf balls. No two cases are exactly alike. Just give your mom alot of love and support while she has them. Those are usually highly painful.  (+ info)

How long can a kidney stone take to pass?

I went to A&E about 3 weeks ago with pain in my side and they diagnosed me with a kidney stone. They did blood tests and said that it wasn't affecting my kidneys so didn't bother doing a scan as it was probably a small one. They said to go home and drink lots of water and it will eventually pass. Well it hasn't. I am not in severe pain, just now and again I get a sharp reminder pain from my groin. Is this normal to take this long? I think I will go and see my doctor to make sure but, wanted to know if anyone else had experienced a kidney stone taking this long to pass?
----------

My stone is 2mm and it descended into my ureter on August 18.

It's now September 13 and it's still in there, although it is now at the end of the ureter and close to dropping into my bladder.

So I'm coming up on 4 weeks.

It wasn't until August 24 that I started drinking the recommended minimum of 2 quarts per day. I think things would have moved along faster had I started drinking sooner, but frankly I just felt too crappy.  (+ info)

How long does it take to get a kidney transplant when a family member wants to give you one?

My mother is filling out papers now but she said it will take 2 years to get a kidney transplant. I want to give her my kidney. I know we have to go to the doctor to see if we match but I don't think it will take that long since we have a donor, me.
----------

Do i need to rehydrate my Kidney beans before adding them to my Chili?

The recipe says one can well i dont like canned things overly much and i have dried Kidney beans. Should i rehydrate them before or can i add extra water and add them in dry?
Thanks.
Oh and if i can just add them how much extra water should i use?
----------

You should follow one of these methods.
First, no matter what you do you need to rinse them well and sort, removing any withered or broken beans. Then:
Allowing one quart for 1 pound of beans soak over night or for 6-8 hours. (discard any beans that float)
OR
Allow 1 quart of water for each pound of beans. Place beans and cold water in a kettle, cover and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce to medium and let beans boil gently 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand 1 hour with the lid on.

The beans can now be used in your Chili recipe.
Do not add salt to the soaking or cooking water.  (+ info)

How does a kidney doctor examine your kidneys?

I have a kidney test next thursday is it most likely they would take a urine sample from me?
----------

It depends on what they are looking for. I've had many kidney problems, and there are a few ways of checking.

- urine test (peeing in a cup)
- blood test (a nurse or lab technician will draw your blood)
- CT scan (Nothing like an MRI, so don't get worried!)

The first step is usually a urine sample, and maybe blood. A CT scan is for looking for things like kidney stones and unknown masses.  (+ info)

How long can you live after kidney failure if you recieve no treatment?

My grandmother is 87 years old she recently had kidney failure, but refused treatment they told her she would only have 2 days to live it's now been 3 weeks! I am just wondering how long can she live like this?
----------

Depending on the true kidney function, diet, and fluid intake the general answer is 10 to 30 days. Did they tell you:
BUN
Creatinine
Potassium
Sodium
Phosphorous
Albumin

How long has she been followed?
You can actually live with the right diet for years on 10% kidney function.
Get in as much quality time with her now, while you can.
God Bless you both.  (+ info)

What effects does losing a kidney do to the body for example can it cause fatigue, affect the immune system?

I lost my left kidney 2 years ago, ever since I have been frequently tired, generally do not feel well, my asthma has been kicked up, sinus infections and ear aches and other bothersom ailments. My periods have been hard, and I have very little energy. They also had to cut 2 ribs off in order to get to the kidney, this was a tramatic removal of a uphrostomy tube which led to my losing my kidney.
----------

Sometimes your blood pressure goes up if you lose a kidney.  (+ info)

How can I improve my chances of finding a kidney donor?

I know thousands die every year waiting for a kidney, so I am really trying to improve my chances of finding a kidney donor. My wife would donate hers to me, but we aren't compatible.
----------

I've seen people put up signs at work, as well as other public places. Good luck. I hope you find a donor soon! Also, you could make a website for yourself stating your need, blood type etc.  (+ info)
