What mechanism in Kidney Disease CAUSES high blood pressure?

I know that high BP can cause kidney disease, but going the other way, what is it about kidney disease that causes high BP?
----------

The kidneys are very important in helping to control blood pressure. They sense how much blood is flowing through certain parts of the kidneys (the glomeruli) and how high the pressure is in those blood vessels. If the kidney thinks the pressure is not high enough, it releases a hormone called renin, which acts to raise blood pressure. In chronic kidney disease, the damage in the kidney often means that blood isn't flowing through the glomeruli normally, so the kidney thinks your blood pressure must be low and releases renin to try and raise it. In the rest of the body the blood is flowing normally so the result overall is high blood pressure.   (+ info)

What are the symptoms of a kidney infection?

I've had some pain in the lower portion of my back on both sides of my spine. My urine has a strong amonia smell to it no matter how much water I drink. How do you cure a kidney infection? Please help! Thank you!

You should feel extreme pressure while urinating if it is a kidney infection. Only a urine test can confirm it. You may also suffer from a back strain.  (+ info)

What are some ways to deal with kidney stones?

Recently I've had a kidney stone and it was the worst pain I've ever felt. I think I got it from some medicine that I took for an ear infection and I don't know if I'll develop more. I just want to know some ways to deal with the pain or ways to help prevent or dissolve them.
----------

In the treatment of kidney stones, herbs can be used to break them down and prevent their formation in the first place. Herbs can also encourage the flow of urine and relieve the irritated walls of the urinary tract. Gravelroot has long been used to dissolve kidney stones. The root is commonly taken in decoction or tincture form. Madder, hydrangea, and rumex can also help break up stones. Aloe vera juice may clear stones and prevent new ones from forming.

Other herbs, such as cornsilk and couch grass, can soothe the walls of the urinary tract. Juniper berries, often used to clear urinary tract infections, can be added to an herbal treatment for stones.  (+ info)

How serious is a Kidney infection for a 15 year old?

I have a kidney infection and my anti-biotics make me have a high fever and vomitting.
Can anyone tell me how serious a Kidney infection actually is?
----------

Kidney infection can range form mild to severe. It is usually cause by bacteria that causes inflammation of the kidneys. In most cases, it can be treated with antibiotics. If, however, an infection is left too long, it can damage the kidneys and impair kidney function... it should therefore be taken seriously. For more information, visit http://www.comprehensive-kidney-facts.com/causes-of-kidney-infection.html

People sometimes experience mild side effects when using antibiotic, but in your case it sounds severe. You should let your doctor know about the fever and vomiting. Maybe the dosage need to be reduced. Hope that your infection clears up soon. God bless.  (+ info)

What happens when a kidney stone passes out of the kidney? Does it sometimes stay in the bladder for awhile?

I think I might have had a kidney stone because of severe pain in my left flank. It lasted about 3-4 hours. But I did not have any further pain anywhere else.
----------

Yes. It may be too large to pass, and so might hang out there for a few days. Drink acidic beverages like cranberry juice and colas to help dissolve it.  (+ info)

Can I make homemade baked beans with kidney beans?

It´s hard to find baked beans in stores here in Germany, so I must compromise.

How would I make kidney beans taste like baked beans?
----------

Yes- the beans aren't the most important thing, it's the flavor and cooking- my grandmother used dried lima beans!

Here is one recipe, it's pretty basic but I would add some molasses if you like baked beans to be sweet:

BAKED KIDNEY BEANS

2 reg. size cans kidney beans
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1 scant c. ketchup
1 green pepper, diced
2 med. onions, diced
1 1/2 lb. bacon

Fry bacon and add to the above ingredients. Put in baking dish and bake for 2 hours at 350 degrees  (+ info)

How many people die every year during kidney transplant surgery?

I'm (hopefully) receiving a kidney transplant later this year, but hospitals never give me a straight answer when I ask how often people die on the table during the surgery. Does anyone out there have the statistics? I need to satisfy my morbid curiosity.
----------

I think it's a 25 to 1 ratio... -Why, -aren't you feeling "lucky " ?? Don't worry about it. Getting Stressed is NOT going to Improve your Odds any !!! :o  (+ info)

What are some ways to keep my kidney healthy?

I have been living with one kidney for most of my life. I am almost 20 now and i want to get as healthy as I can. I am researched online that gives some small ideas. Does anyone have anymore?
----------

Beyond using your sense of thirst to dictate how much water and water-rich foods you ingest, here are two important ways to protect your kidneys from prematurely breaking down:

1.

Don’t eat too much protein.

Eating more protein than you need leads to greater workload on your kidneys, which must filter a by-product of protein metabolism called blood urea nitrogen (BUN) out of your blood. This increased workload can contribute to premature breakdown of the glomeruli in your kidneys.

If you have healthy kidneys, you can safely eat up to half of your body weight (in pounds) in grams per day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds and are in good health, you can safely eat up to 75 grams of protein from minimally processed foods per day. If you have problems with your kidneys, you should decrease this amount to a level that results in a healthy blood urea nitrogen level.

If your current health status is such that you need an objective way to monitor how well your body is responding to the amount of protein that you are eating, ask your doctor about monitoring your BUN level. Whenever you eat protein, your body breaks it down into amino acids that contain nitrogen. Nitrogen separates from amino acids and combines with other molecules to form urea. Urea is eliminated from your body when your kidneys filter it out of your blood and into your urine.

A healthy range for BUN is between 4 to 17 mg/dL. Anywhere between 18 to 21 mg/dL is a sign that you may be eating too much protein, and possibly that your kidneys are under excessive strain. More than 21 mg/dL is a strong sign that you need to significantly reduce your protein intake.

The link between eating too much protein and developing kidney disease is one that is not often talked about by supporters of a high-protein diet. While it is important to keep your blood sugar and insulin at healthy levels by avoiding sugar and other simple carbohydrates, please know that a high-protein diet poses many dangers to your health, especially if most of your protein is cooked. Your health is best served by replacing simple carbohydrates with lots of high quality fat, and moderate amounts of healthy protein and non-starchy vegetables.
2.

Don’t take over-the-counter pain pills on a regular basis.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and aspirin are known to cause kidney damage and disease if taken regularly. Acetaminophen (Tylenol and Excedrin) can also cause kidney damage and failure if used regularly. All of these over-the-counter pain medications probably don’t pose significant danger if your kidneys are relatively healthy and you use them for emergencies only.

As many professional athletes have discovered during the past several years, regular use of prescription anti-inflammatory pain medication like Vioxx, Indocin, and Naprosyn poses even greater danger to kidney health than over-the-counter pain killers.
