Is kleine levin syndrome a joke or what?

Why can't people with Kleine Levin syndrome cause their brain to adjust to a normal schedule? There is a method called the Uberman sleep schedule in which you deprive yourself of sleep in order to achieve REM faster and have more restful sleep. Why can't people with Kleine Levnin syndrome do that? I think that people who have Kleine Levin syndrome need to just man up and get out of bed.
----------

Why would you care? Why would you ask? Do you know a person with KLS? And what do you know about KLS or sleeping disorders?

KLS is not a circadian rhythm sleep disorder where people have a hard time waking when they should wake or sleeping when they should. That has to do with melatonin, sun light, and a history of sleeping too late and/or staying up too late. That is more an an annoyance rather than a dibilitating disorder.

People with KLS don't just need to hit REM faster, that is all irrelevant. Not to mention that just getting REM sleep is not the best thing, delta wave (N3) sleep in particular is important. Not to mention that a person with KLS can sleep for a month with only an hour or two awake so sleeping 20-22hrs daily will still be better than The Uberman Sleep Schedule, which is NOT designed to reset your circadian rhythms. There is a completely different type of sleep deprivation for people who are waking/sleeping at the wrong time.

And a person with KLS who is symptomatic could never stay awake that long, they would just pass out and not wake. If you put a gun to the head of a person with KLS and said "say awake or you die" then they would die because it is a serious, debilitating, extremely rare problem. Don't you think sleep specialists might have mentioned that Uberman sleep schedule was the cure if it actually was? Do you really think the people with KLS just want to sleep for months at a time as their life goes by?

You might think people with KLS should just "man up" the problem is they can't or they do get out of bed and perhaps fall back asleep in the bathroom or the hall.

Why are you bashing these people and acting like you have all the answers? What makes you think they can get out of bed and just have a normal life. Even with 100-120 mg of amphetamines they still can't be awake for very long.

I would love to know where you got these theories.

Do you think narcolepsy is a joke too? Just a bunch of lazy people?  (+ info)

1 Klinefelter syndrome

Definition:

Klinefelter syndrome is a condition that occurs in men as a result of an extra X chromosome. The most common symptom is infertility.

Alternative Names:
47 X-X-Y syndrome
Causes, incidence, and risk factors:

Humans have 46 chromosomes, which contain all of a person's genes and DNA. Two of these chromosomes, the sex chromosomes, determine a person's gender. Both of the sex chromosomes in females are called X chromosomes. (This is written as XX.) Males have an X and a Y chromosome (written as XY). The two sex chromosomes help a person develop fertility and the sexual characteristics of their gender.

Klinefelter syndrome results in males who have at least one extra X chromosome. Usually, this occurs as a result of one extra X (written as XXY).

Klinefelter syndrome is found in about 1 out of every 500-1,000 newborn males. Women who have pregnancies after age 35 are slightly more likely to have a boy with this syndrome than younger women.
Dysthymia

Definition:

Dysthymia is a chronic form of depression, characterized by moods that are consistently low, but not as extreme as other types of depression.

Alternative Names:
Neurotic depression (dysthymia); Dysthymic disorder; Chronic depression; Depression - chronic
Causes, incidence, and risk factors:

The exact cause of dysthymia is unknown. Although the symptoms are not as severe as those of other forms of depression, affected people struggle nearly every day with low self-esteem, despair, and hopelessness.

Like all forms of depression, dysthymia occurs more frequently in women than in men and affects up to 5% of the general population. Dysthymia can occur alone or in conjunction with more severe depression or other mood or psychiatric disorders.

Kleine–Levin syndrome, Sleeping Beauty Syndrome?

Okay, so if one sleeps for over 13 days how do they stay healthy and alive? Food & water & things the body needs everyday...? What if a girl has her period during that time does she just sleep in a huge puddle of blood? Any info please, thanks. I already read the wiki page, but it doesn't answer specific questions =D
----------

There was an episode of Mystery Diagnosis where a girl had Kleine-Levin syndrome and she was able to get out of bed for long enough to use the washroom and drink water before she was so exhausted she had to lay down again.

It is not the same thing as being in a coma. The websites I looked at said affected individuals sleep up to 20 hours a day, so they are able to get out of bed to eat and do some things, but not for long. It can also be controlled to some extent with medication, so that the person does not sleep for as long.  (+ info)

what is Kleine-Levin Syndrome?

Kleine-Levin Syndrome, or KLS, is a rare neurological disorder characterized by recurring periods of excessive amounts of sleep and altered behavior. At the onset of an episode the patient becomes drowsy and sleeps for most of the day and night (hypersomnolence), waking only to eat or go to the bathroom. When awake, the patient’s whole demeanor is changed, often appearing “spacey” or childlike. When awake, they experience confusion, disorientation, complete lack of energy (lethargy), and lack of emotions (apathy). Individuals are not able to attend school, work or care for themselves. Most are bedridden, tired and uncommunicative even when awake.

Most patients report that everything seems out of focus, and that they are hypersensitive to noise and light. In some cases, food cravings (compulsive hyperphagia) are exhibited. Instances of uninhibited hypersexuality during episodes (mostly males) and instances of depression (mostly females) have also been reported.

Affected individuals may go for a period of weeks, months or even years without experiencing any symptoms, and then they reappear with little warning. In between episodes those diagnosed with KLS appear to be in perfect health with no evidence of behavioral or physical dysfunction.

The cause of Kleine-Levin Syndrome is not known. Thus, family support and education are the best management currently available.  (+ info)

is Kleine Levine syndrome a genetic disease?

i need to pick a genetic disease for science class and i wondered if this was one of them?? or is it viral or parasitic or bacterial???
----------

This is a sleep disorder whose cause is unknown. It is usually seen in adolescents, and is a tragic condition. Scientists and doctors are working towards better understanding this condition. I'm afraid we still have much to learn about the brain.

Here is a link to a website, and perhaps you can write to a member of their discussion forum about your school project.

Heard of a rare syndrome called Jarcho-Levin? ?

I need to know tips teachers can use to help a student w/ this disability. Everything I have found suggests that it is extremely fatal at birth. But my teacher insists that she has had other students work this project with success.
