Labyrinthitis???

Labyrinthitis is a balance disorder. It is an inflammatory process affecting the labyrinths that house the vestibular system (which sense changes in head position) of the inner ear.
What I want to know is if you get it once....is it more likely that you will get it again, or are the odds the same as if you never had it?

What are the best methods to cure Labyrinthitis?

I'm wondering if there are any particular methods or info I should know about Labryinthitis.
For more info, here's a wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labyrinthitis

To summarize, it is a balance disorder.
The illness causes loss of balance, dizziness, etc, as well as side effects of depression.
my father appears to be suffering from it, but I'm not sure.
He will see a doctor soon; is there any info we should know of beforehand that may help us?

Thanks!

Hi Glenn

Here are some ideas on how to heal the issue. Laby is basically the same as Vertigo. Be sure he drinks up to a gallon of water a day and gets better nutrition.

Causes
Vertigo is caused by disturbances within the equilibratory system - ears, inner ear canals, the cranial nerves servicing the ears, the associated brain parts, and the eyes. The system is disturbed due to mild stress on the cranial nerves, middle ear infections, shingles, inflammation of the ear canals, obstruction in an ear tube, a tumor, or a nerve inflammation. All of these factors must be screened for and addressed before lasting relief from vertigo symptoms can be achieved.

Note: Vertigo can be an indication of a variety of other health problems. Prolonged or severe attacks of vertigo require immediate medical attention.

Natural Cures

Diet: Avoid caffeine, chocolates, salt, fried foods, nicotine, drugs, alcohol, and aspartame (NutraSweet(TM)).

Flower Essences: Rescue Remedy® is useful for calming accompanying stress. Scleranthus can also be helpful.

Herbs: Ginkgo biloba and ginger can be helpful. Take one 40 mg tablet of ginkgo or two capsules of ginger three times a day.

Homeopathy: Useful homeopathic remedies include Gelsemium, Phosphorus, Cocculus, Aconite, Nat. mur., Sulfur, Silicea, Lycopodium, and Belladonna.

Lifestyle: Stay still during vertigo attacks and avoid rapid body movements, especially of the head. Be sure to reduce stress, and get adequate sleep.

Nutritional Supplementation: Recommended nutrients include Vitamin B complex, vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B6, vitamin C plus bioflavonoids and rutin, vitamin E, calcium, choline, and adrenal glandulars.

Alternative Professional Care
If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating vertigo: Acupressure, Acupuncture, Ayurveda, Bodywork, Chiropractic, Craniosacral Therapy, Environmental Medicine, Hypnotherapy, Magnetic Field Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Osteopathy, Qigong, Reflexology, and Traditional Chinese Medicine

How do you tell the difference between otitis media and labyrinthitis?

It's hard to tell the difference between a middle ear infection (otitis media) and an inner ear infection (labyrinthitis) without having a doctor look in the ear. They usually feel the same - a deep, throbbing pain within the ear, sometimes stabbing, that may radiate throughout that side of the head. A deeper infection may cause a perforation in the eardrum, which would lead to extreme sharp pain and drainage of pus and/or blood from the ear.

If you are having pain that is consistent with an ear infection, you should make an appointment with your doctor right away. Minor ear infections can clear up on their own without antibiotics, but more severe infections (especially those of the inner ear) need antibiotics to clear them up. Leaving an ear infection untreated can cause permanent damage to the ear, leading to hearing loss, and can spread into other areas of your sinuses and even cause pitting of the skull.

Hope that helps!  (+ info)

If you have Labyrinthitis would you have to have a cold first?

Im just wondering if my auntie has Labyrinthitis because she is really dissy and didnt have a cold please reply as soon as possible if you know thanks!
----------

In addition to balance control problems, a labyrinthitis patient may encounter hearing loss and tinnitus. Labyrinthitis is usually caused by a virus, but it can also arise from bacterial infection, head injury, extreme stress, an allergy or as a reaction to a particular medication. Both bacterial and viral labyrinthitis can cause permanent hearing loss, although this is rare.

Labyrinthitis often follows an upper respiratory tract infection (URI).
Recovery from acute labyrinthine inflammation generally takes from one to six weeks; however, it is not uncommon for residual symptoms (dysequilibrium and/or dizziness) to last for many months or even years[5] if permanent damage occurs.

Recovery from a permanently damaged inner ear typically follows three phases:

An acute period, which may include severe vertigo and vomiting
approximately two weeks of subacute symptoms and rapid recovery
finally a period of chronic compensation which may last for months or years.  (+ info)

does anyone know any natural remedies for labyrinthitis?

A friend of mine has been suffering from viral labyrinthitis for nearly 12 months, Does anyone know any natural therapies that work for this?
----------

It’s hard to say why your friend is suffering from viral labyrinthitis – but if he/she haven’t had any more serious infections (such as pneumonia or bronchitis), it’s unlikely to be anything serious. Eating healthily, getting enough sleep and generally looking after yourself may help you fight off minor illnesses, and cope better when you have them.

It may seem strange that a single natural supplement has the potential to help fight or reverse a large number of health conditions--- until we understand that so many diseases actually share the same causes.

Over the past decade, more and more diseases have been shown to be the result of two major causes -- free radical damage and chronic inflammation.

Free radicals are dangerous substances we ingest and are exposed to constantly. It has the ability to damage and destroy our organs, cells and even our DNA. This damage can only be prevented by the regular consumption of an adequate number of powerful antioxidant. And Xanthones is so far the most powerful antioxidant known to man.

www.naturesmagicmiracle.com

The complete mangosteen/whole fruit (rind & pulp) contains more than forty nutritionally active components called xanthones.

Beware of capsule or extract from mangosteen, it may only contain 3-4 xanthones. It should be the whole fruit.

Take care & God bless.

I have been told I have Labyrinthitis by my doctor?

I've had some mediaction (Stemetil) but it has run out. For future flare-up's is there an over-the-counter medication that is great at relieving the symptoms (dizziness and nausea)? I've tried travel sickness tablets but not very good.

Labyrinthitis is a viral illness affecting the middle ear. It should only be a one off problem. If you are having recurrent symptoms you should seek medical advise again to clarify the diagnosis.  (+ info)

I think I may have one of these, because Things seem tilted at times, I feel dizzy at times for no reason, I get a ringing in my ear rarely, and I forget what I'm doing and zone out constantly. This has been going on for 2 years and has been getting worse.

You need to get properly assessed as if it labyrinthitis you will need physiotherapy to correct this problem, an audiologist will be able to direct you to the correct processes required.  (+ info)

How long do people normally have viral labyrinthitis vertigo?

I have had that or the BPPV for the past 6 days. I vomited repeatedly for the first two days. My doctor prescribed me amoxicillin and meclizine...but I am not feeling any better. I still feel dizzy (like the room is spinning around me) and if i try to look at an object, it looks like it is moving; my balance is off, I can now slightly walk around my apartment whereas at the beginning I had to get my husband to help me move around. I have already missed 4 days of work due to this...I can't drive and the medicine is blurring my vision...

Any one else had this problem? What did you do? Please help...

They thght I had labrynthitis several yrs ago but it turned out to be something else. I'm amazed you have been out of bed at all! With me it was MS but vertigo is vertigo no matter what is causing it, and it's nasty! I called my particular experience - Vertigo From Hell! I'm sure you feel the same about yours. Your vision problems cld also be caused by the labrynthitis. I have spoken with ppl who had labrynthitis & besides having a very bad week of it, it lasted about 2 wks & then they had the odd moment of dizziness or vertigo for a wk or 2 after. So you're just about nearing the end of it. Oh you cld try taking a B complex with your meclizine. It might make all the difference. My pharamcist told me to do this when I have trouble with vertigo. It certainly can't cause you any harm. I hope this helps. I really do feel for you.  (+ info)
