What is the function of laryngeal cartilage?

Just happen to need help with some anatomy homework. This one is kicking my butt x]
----------

The same as the bronchial cartilage. To provide rigidity for an open airway. But it is especially important in the larynx because there are moving parts, the vocal cords. The muscles that control the cords are attached to the cartilage so they need the rigid structure.

What causes edema in your whole body other then salt and heart problems?

I have it all over my body. My legs are swollen, my hands, chest, and even eye lids, and everything. My heart has been checked, I have been checked for blood clots, and everything else is working fine. I don't eat a lot of salt in my diet. I usually get this way in hot weather but lately it has been cold under 30 degrees F. Any suggestions?

What can I do about Edema in Pregnancy?

I am 8 months pregnant and my feet, legs, and hands have pitting edema. My doc told me yesterday to not eat anything with sodium, drink skim milk, and pretty much stay off of my feet. What kinds of foods have little or no sodium? I have looked it up on several sites but all the answers still have like 100+ mg of sodium! Doc says thats still too much. I need help! Also, what can i do to relieve the tingling and pressure from the swelling?
----------

There had been no oedema in your earlier pregnancies or is this your first pregnancy? Well if this your first pregnancy, which it seems to be from your worries, continue following the advice of your doctor. If your blood pressure is within the normal range, your heart is sound, and there is no excessive proteins getting past your kidneys and into the urine, you do not have to be that afraid. You cannot altogether do away with sodium, but just remember not to add extra pinch of salt in your diet. Rest is justified but whenever you lie if you can keep turning to one side or the other every half an hour, you will be much relieved of the tingling and the pressure that you feel.  (+ info)

What is Humeral greater tubercle increase signal likely represents edema from recent trauma?

I do not know all the doctor lingo. I need help to tell me what my MRI means.
----------

On the side of your humerus (your upper arm bone), there is a bone protrusion called the "greater tuberosity", this is normal anatomy of the bone. The area around it is swollen (edema), and they think that this is because you had trauma to it recently.  (+ info)

Lymph edema! Are there any remedies that can reduce the symptoms?

I've tried lymph drainage and wearing compression socks/stockings. Are there any medications that can reduce the symptoms of a primary lymph edema?
----------

I have had primary lymphedema ever since I was 13 years old. I am now 19. I have looked for years for an answer to this question, and the answer is no.

I'm sorry to say, but manual drainage and stockings are the only way the disease can be controlled. There is nothing to take that will reduce the swelling, unless your swelling is at stage 4. (Elphant-sized limbs that look like huge deformations.) My leg has never gotten this bad, and it is only about 2/3 bigger than my normal leg, however, I do know that water pills will help reduce SEVERE "stage 4" swelling, but will otherwise do nothing for people like me who have their lymphedema to a manageable level. :(  (+ info)

Singing: How do you reduce vocal swelling/edema with a cold virus?

I am coming down with a cold two days before I have to sing at a wedding. I am a trained opera singer, so pls understand that I am not 'losing voice' due to any bad techniques. But I need help on how to reduce edema to the vocal folds without risking vocal hemmorhage when I sing.

I have mild laryngitis -- I can technically sing, but my head resonance has gone to crap and my control is lessened due to swelling of the cords. Range is down by a whole step, as I have to start covering on F#4 instead of G#4, and I can't seem to hold the breath very well, presumably because my cords are swollen and can't close all the way.

This is due to a virus:
My mom came down with something very similar on Christmas (of course), but I did not know about it until after I had been around her for a while. She lost her speaking voice a couple of days later, and is still recovering. I have no allergies or respiratory disorders.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to heal in the next two days?
----------

You of all people should know it is best not to sing when you have a cold and or a sore throat. Start using hot tea with lemon and alot of honey in it. Several times a day. it will soothe the throat-------- and do not try to sing until you absolutely have to.  (+ info)
