What kinds of alternative therapies can be used for ADHD and Learning Disorders?

My daughter has a touch of ADHD and learning problems and I don't want to put her on drugs that distort her mind. She has problems with short-term memory, processing speed, and being able to concentrate.
----------

My boyfriend had ADHD and he started drinking MonaVie, which contains the Acai berry as the main ingredient, and 18 other exotic fruits, all packed with antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. Acai is the number one HIGHEST antioxidant on the planet. On the third day, my boyfriend's thinking was sharp, clear, and he was organizing his office methodically. He was able to write a paper for almost 12 hours straight, whereas before, he would have had to take breaks every 20 minutes, lie on the couch, watch TV, procrastinate, etc.

I have never seen such a thing. He used to have stacks and stacks of paper in his office, and you couldn't even see the hardwood floor.

Now he's organized, calm, and he's even doing his own taxes, if you can believe that! The guy never used to pay bills! He used to be so disorganized that he could barely function. He is a completely new man.

We both drink it now, and it's amazing stuff. I was on anti-depressants, but not anymore. I also had numbness in my hands and feet due to bone spurs in my neck, and that problem has gone away too.

Are there any mental disorders known that will not allow a person to stop learning?

I have become addicted to learning; to the point of interfering with every day life. It seems to be a stimulant each time I learn anything regardless of how major or minor it may be. People with the SA answers please keep them to yourselves, if anyone knows I would be indebted to you:) I have been seeing professionals for the past few years....is it some type of O.C.D? HELP!

Is it distressing for those with learning or personality disorders whose doctor or psychiatrist fails to?

diagnose them for years...so they just feel stupid and like a loser, because they don't have any proof there is something wrong with them
----------

Yes actually. I have dyslexia but I wasn't diagnosed until I was 11 or 12, so for years I had really low self-esteme because everyone told me I was too stupid to read :[
I remember one day at parents evening my teacher told my mother that I was mentally retarded.
But to be honest, I don't feel like there is anything "wrong" with me. Now I'm proud of my dyslexia because amazing people like Leonardo Di Vinci and Agatha Christie also had it. I think having dyslexia makes me special :]  (+ info)

So I have a friend who had some speech problems as a child, extreme shyness, and learning problems. He went to speech therapy worked with teachers and everything and isn't really having issues with it now. But when his mother had him she was at least 35 if not older. Could that have anything to do with it?

What are some disorders related to Learning Disabilities?

As a person with learning disabilities who also has three daughter's who also have learning disabilities, there are several which are disorders and some that aren't. Downs syndrome, autism, aspergers syndrome, PDD or Pervasive Developmental disorder. These are just some of the disorders that also have components of learning disabilities. Things like dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalulia which are the equalent to reading, writing and math problems. These aren't disorders so much as processing difficulties. The brain does not process the information the way that others brains do. I know I have dyslexia as do two of my daughters, my oldest has developmental delays not related to downs syndrome.  (+ info)

was i born with learning disorders?

i dont no every thing about learning disabilities, but i think i was born with them, i have some dislexeya, and a.d.d. and other learning disabilities, when i was in school i was called a retard by other kids it was a very tough time. i try and i try but my brain does not work like others i feel like i am at a disadvantage, i think people love it because they can tell when a person has learning disabilities and they no its just that much eazy for them to blow past them at work because lets face it some one with out learning disabilities can learn things faster, how do people really look at people like me, and what do they really know about learning disorders, i have been acused of being a pot head and druger, people say thats why you have those problems, people make fun of my spelling and are very cold about it,like i have no feelings, so like i said how do people veiw people with learning disabilities, and any one out there with learning disabilities what has been your experence ?
----------

The world is a cruel place, and not everyone is understanding. I happen to be someone who is. I have not shared your personal experience, but I can empathasize with you.

You sound like you're really trying to overcome your disabilities and be successful. You might look into the Learning Disabilities Association of America. There are a lot of resources on their web site that could help you. Here's the link:

I think it's horrible that people have made fun of your spelling. I work in a technical field with people who are very good at math and science. Most of them can't spell though, and they've even asked me how to spell simple words before. There are tons of brilliant people who can't spell, so no one should make you feel bad because of a disability. Even though you have a hard time spelling, it doesn't make you stupid. You need to figure out what you're good at and pursue it so that you can be successful.

Good Luck!  (+ info)
