legionnaires disease?

My grandmother's doctor said she might have legionnaires pneumonia. I looked up the odds that I could get it from visiting her. Has anyone heard of that winding up in hospitals in New York? I know the disease was going around Syracuse, but i don't know about the pneumonia.
Generally the incidence is linked to exposure to air-conditioning systems on the industrial scale that not regularly cleaned and are good breeding grounds for the legionaires. The typical prevention cleaning includes flushing with a highly chlorinated water.

Most hospitals don't have "central air". Cooled water runs through a pipe into a radiator like unit inside the room where a fan blows air across the coils. This way there's no sharing of recirculated air from room to room and floor to floor.

If the hospital where she stays or works has central A/C the odds are they have an upgraged filter sytem with black lights in the ducts to kill or capture bacteria. If not then anythings possible.

More worrysome is drug resistant tuberculosis.

legionnaires disease is a water-based respiratory infection. if the infection arose in the ward, search for and get rid of any and all standing water (check inside, under and behind air conditioners, refridgeration units and the like for condensation puddles) Breathing in water vapours containing the pathogen is the most common vector.
if the patient came into the ward with legionnaires, then it's much easier. the pathogen cannot survive for long periods of time in open air, so simply ensure that they have some privacy from the other patients, and have all staff treating them wear masks to prevent possible infection and cross-contamination.  (+ info)

I would imagine that you could, but i think it would be rare. I have never heard of it happening. The only case i have ever heard of actually is a bunch of people getting it from a fountain in a restauraunt.  (+ info)

Doubtful. They would have tested for Legionnaire's disease since it is so similar to pneumonia. He died from complications of pneumonia, which is very unfortunate.  (+ info)

it can help with pneumonia so I was wondering if it can help with that too.
Yes moxifloxacin has been effective for treating LD. Newer macrolides like azithromycin has also been effective. Antibiotics that are effective must be able to achieve high intracellular concentrations. Is it dangerous to leave your water heater off. I mean like for bacterial growth like legionnaires disease.

I have a 40 gallon tank, it's in an unairconditioned area 80-100 degrees during the day.
Legionnaires' Disease lives in warm/hot water. Is your water source chlorinated? It should be OK if it is. I don't know why your water heater is off, but it will have to totally re-heat all that water every day which is energy intensive. Maybe you should look into one of those smaller new water heaters that only heat what you will use.  (+ info)

The disease presents as a rapidly progressive, severe, necrotizing pneumonia, accompanied by fever, nonproductive cough, and myalgias.
The onset is abrupt, after an incubation period of 2 to 10 days.
Within 2 days, most patients develop a persistent high fever and respiratory rales.
It involves primarily the lower respiratory tract, although it is often associated with multi-systemic extrapulmonary manifestations. Afflicted patients may sometimes have gastrointestinal symptoms, liver function abnormalities, renal failure , central nervous system complications and cutaneous manifestations which may include erythematous, maculopapular or petechial skin lesions.
Those who abuse alcohol and smoke heavily are also at increased risk.
