Leukoplakia?

Is there a chance that a case of leukoplakia in the mouth will NOT go on to be cancerous?
----------

Only a small percentage of patients with leukoplakia do go on to develop frank Cancer. If you are a smoker you must STOP, not cut down as this is the usual precipitating cause.  (+ info)

leukoplakia?

Is leukoplakia is qurable or not??
----------

This is a good question. There are two important issues here. Firstly, there are a spectrum of changes in the lining of the throat, mouth or larynx, ranging from dysplasia, to carcinoma in situ, to microinvasive cancer and finally to deeply invasive cancer. All of these can be present in the white lesions that we call leukoplakia. Most of the time, biopsy of a leukoplakia or white lesion of the lining of the mouth, throat or larynx is done by a taking only a small portion of the white area. This means that the pathologist (the doctor who examines the tissue under the microscope) only can see a small portion of the lesion (since most of it is left in the patient). Therefore there could be a precancerous lesion or even a cancer in some other part of the specimen that is still in the patient. So, if the white lesion is entirely removable without causing the patient a significant problem with eating or speaking, then it may be advisable to recommend removing the whole thing so we know exactly what we are dealing with. If the final diagnosis is then benign, the patient should be followed every few months for recurrence and reexcision, which occurs occasionally. If on the other hand cancer is discovered in the lesion, then additional treatment can be recommended at that time. If the white lesion is too big to remove, it may be preferable to remove as much as possible, even with multiple excisions and perform small biopsies on the remaining portions of the lesion. The patient may then be followed closely looking for growth or change.  (+ info)

What can i use to get rid of leukoplakia?

I just quit smoking recently, but I noticed that my throat was hurting and I found a patch of what looks like leukoplakia at the top of my throat, but i do not know how to treat it, it seems to be getting better, but it is still bothering me. What can i use to make it go away quicker?
----------

You cannot speed up the healing time without seeing you doctor.
A small percentage of leukoplakic patches show early signs of cancer, and many cancers of the mouth (oral cancers) occur next to areas of leukoplakia. For that reason, it's best to see your dentist if you have unusual changes in your mouth lasting longer than a week.

well done for quiting smoking!  (+ info)

Is it possible to have leukoplakia on leteral sides of tongue?

i' ve been smokin for 7 years.. i realised that i had leukoplakia on leteral sides of my tongue...is it possible to have leukoplakia on leteral sides of tongue, or is it hairy leukoplakia which is locate leteral sides of tongue..
----------

Yes, you can have leukoplakia on the sides of your tongue; hairy leukoplakia almost exclusively occurs in those with deficient immunity (HIV or malignancy). This is something you should definitely have checked out by your dentist or oral surgeon and possibly biopsied - better safe than sorry.  (+ info)

How can you tell the difference between leukoplakia and oral candidiasis by inspection?

Hi.
I have seen both patches of oral hairy leukoplakia and oral candidiasis.
The lesions of OHL are always darker in appearence and look more like mold on the tongue and the hard pallate. The lesions have rounded edges and are always multiple in numbers.
The lesions of oral candida are always pink in the middle with concentric whitty pathces on the edges which gives them a whitty appearence on the edges.
They are also round edged and are are more on the hard pallate.

The other important observation is that aral candidiasis hurts and the person with it will complain of pain during chewing and swallowing (Dysphagia). while the lesions of OHL do not hurt and sometimes the person does not know they are there untill an oral exam is done or during oral hygiene.  (+ info)

I have faded white under my gums and between my gum and lip. Is this Leukoplakia?

I've dipped only 3 tins but i've asked people about they're mouths (who are dip-free) and they say their mouths are the same. It looks faded with my tissue so its like faded white and pink. I just really need a second opinion. It doesn't hurt but I'm going to the dentist soon so I will get it checked. Just want some opinions though. Thanks.
----------

It sounds like it could be leukoplakia, although only a microscopic exam can tell for sure. Stop dipping because it will get worse and a certain percent of leukoplakia can turn into oral cancer.  (+ info)

Which is the difference between oral lichen planus of the tongue and oral hairy leukoplakia of the tongue?

From the pictures i have seen on the internet they seem the same to me.I have these little white irregular lines that sometimes appear on the lateral sides of my tongue but when i see the pictures they resemble to oral hairy leukoplakia and lichen planus of the lateral sides of the tongue.I just want to know how can i distinguish the main differences between the two as far as their appearance and symptoms are concerned?
----------

I think that this should clear it up! This is from my Kerr and Ash's Oral Pathology book from 1986. I am not convinced that anything has changed.

Lichen planus is a relatively common dermatological (skin) disease with oral manifestations in about 1/3 of the cases. The clinical oral manifestation vary from flat or slightly elevated lesion with striae to extensive areas of ulceration or erosion (erosive lichen planus). Except for the erosive type, the oral lesions are seldom a diagnosis problem or require treatment. The presence of skin lesions helps to make a diagnosis in erosive lichen planus. It has unknown etiology, but may be stress related and looks white and lacey.

Oral hairy leukoplakia is a viral leukoplakia of the tongue in immunosuppressed male homosexuals who have or may develop the features of AIDS..... Clinical lesions appear as white, slightly raised "hairy" plaques on the tongue, they usually do not rub off to leave a bleeding surface as may be seen in candidial lesions.
