What are the effects of spinal cord injuries?

I met the most FANTASTIC little girl the other day! She is 7, and she fell as a baby and suffered some spinal cord injuries that have given her many of the syptoms of Cereberal Palsy. My partner has CP so I am somewhat familiar with it. The little girls walks with crutches, but I heard them saying she may need a wheelchair soon. I know this is a VERY broad question, but I am just looking for people with experience in the situation?
----------

Well, since the spinal cord is affected, it mainly concerns the person's central nervous system. It can affect four areas of the spinal cord: (top to bottom)
1. cranial (everything is affected: mobility, breathing, loss of sensation, paraplegic where limbs cannot function)
2. thoraxic (breathing)
3. lumbar (loss of sensation)
4. sacral (paraplegic)

The little girl could have CP since it is either congenital or acquired. It is best to have her assessed by her medical team.  (+ info)

Scanning is very expensive and some people believe that we are over-scanning head injuries?

Scanning is very expensive and some people believe that we are over-scanning head injuries and this is just a waste of time and money.

What is your opinion on this?
----------

I agree. They made me get a CAT scan for a head injury once when I didn't really feel that I needed it.

I am also pretty sure that something was wrong with the machine because they didn't give me any contrast dye-- but I got "burns" on my hand and face. My skin is still weird on that part of my hand.  (+ info)

My Dr banned my exercising due to injuries from a wreck. What can I do to still lose weight?

I already diet, and I've lost about 6 pounds, but I know without exercising my weight loss will be hindered. The injuries are in my knee, neck and tailbone.
----------

That's really hard to say since those injuries occur across the full scope of your body. To continue losing weight, an even more significant diet change is recommended. Of course, this can easily become unhealthy, so proceeed with caution. Depending on your knee injury, I would suggest walking for an hour or so a day. There are plenty of benefits with that, including weightloss. Yoga is another more alternative source for weight loss. It helps the body function better as a whole and with more, shall I say, coherence and efficiency and aids in the loss of weight. Water aerobics is a good idea, since it greatly reduces your weight and the amount of stress and tension put on joints. Other than that, I can't think of much other advice other than to simply maintain your current weight and wait until your body heals to continue your normal routine.  (+ info)

Where can I find the best information on treating Burn Injuries?

My brother was severely burned recently in a car accident after a drunk driver collided with a gas truck. The gas truck exploded killing the truck driver and colliding into my brother's vehicle and setting it on fire. My young brother is now in the hospital for severe 3rd degree burns that cover the entire left side of his body. I really have no idea where to go to get more information on 3rd degree burns and burn injuries. I need also need legal advice too.
----------

Have you checked out this link http://www.burnsurvivor.com/script/boardlogin/login.asp its a Burn Injury Forum I signed up last year when I burned my hand at work. It's a great community of people that help each other with resourceful information, support and burn advice. I think you have to sign up but it only took a minute. I strongly urge you to contact The Burn Injury Hotline too 1-800-669-7700 they have a lot of really helpful support and legal advice.  (+ info)

Why is tearing your ACL considered one of the worst injuries?

Aren't there other knee injuries and surgeries that can render you unable to do sports for 6-12 months? Why is the ACL the feared one? Isn't actually quite common among athletes? How about breaking your patella requiring ORIF (that seems pretty rough)? There seems to be a lot of knee surgeries that actually require about at least 6 months before sports return, similar to the ACL.
----------

it's not considered one of the worst, it is considered one of the most common... that's what's scary  (+ info)
