What is a good , non surgical, method of resolving low back pain caused by a hernieated disk?

The disk pain is in my low back just above my sacrum. I am attempting to avoid surgery due to the fear that i will be unable to function as a person after the surgery. I have see the results of some surgery.. They patients have never been the same.
Oh yes, I am in China for the moment. I do not have access to a Chiropractor
I am studying Tai Chi every morning. It gets me outta bed and moving each day.. I can say that.
----------

Surgery should be your last option.

I suggest seeing a physical therapist if necessary but avoiding poor posture. Positioning for comfort and daily abdominal crunches should help.

If it hurts don't do it. And get a comfortable bed.

If you get back spasms due to the herniation, see your doctor, you may need an antispasmotic.

Low back pain is a chronic condition. There is no easy fix. Therefore, think long term solutions. You know your body and your pain better than anyone...gauge the effectiveness of your interventions by how you feel.

Don't overly rely on pain meds. They can build tolerance and don't cure you. Use them only for the really bad days. By the way, alternative pain interventions really work. Don't think they don't. Research yoga or meditation. Avoid chiropractors for herniated discs. They won't help in the long run.

Hope that helps.  (+ info)

What causes low back pain increased with sitting?

everytime I sit for more than a minute my low back hurts so incredibly bad. It radiates to the front of my lower abs what feels like under my hipbones. it hurts to move when I am laying down..what could cause this?
----------

Vesper, the answer to sitting is a fairly simple one. The vertebrae are a column and supported at the bottom by the legs and pelvis. When you are sitting the pressure is directly sent up the spine from the pelvis thus taking away the legs as a means of shock absorption. When you are lying down it would seem to be another case of degeneration of the vertebrae. The rear joints of the vertebrae are called facets and when these joints become irritated from degeneration they create pain. This pain can be from just shifting from one spot to another or changing from sitting to lying or etc. There are things that you can do to ease these. If you are over your ideal weight then loss some weight. Out of shape then start getting into better condition. Perhaps the most important aspect is your posture. If it is bad then you need to work on that. I would recommend that you see a physical therapist about this and the other back issues that are present.  (+ info)

Does anyone know of any good home remedy's for chronic low back pain ?

I have chronic low back pain for the past 20 + yrs and I seldom go to the doctor for anything. I have used up all of my vacation time on my back and it still hurts a lot. It is very hard to walk sometimes. Bent over or limping towards one side. Any help would be great.

Hi Ed! Have you ever tried Tramadol? Tramadol is used to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain. Tramadol also may be used to treat pain caused by surgery and chronic conditions such as cancer or joint pain. Tramadol works by decreasing the brain's perception and response to pain. Tramadol also reduces the size or magnitude of the pain signal passed from one nerve to another. Tramadol is a wonder drug for me! you can find more info on Tramadol at www.Buy-Tramadol-Online.info. also, You can Buy Tramadol Online with NO prior prescription and they ship via Fedex Overnight. Good Luck Dear!  (+ info)

What is the best low-cost ergonomic office chair for lower back pain?

I have serious lower back pain with two dehyrdrated discs in the lumbar. I also have an office job. Sitting is absolutely killing me. I'm in physical therapy, but I'm hoping an ergonomic chair might help some too. Unfortunately I need to buy my own chair, and I can't really pop for an Aeron. We just have your typical swivel, up/down task chairs. Does anyone have a suggestion for a sub-500(400 would be even better) ergo task chair?
----------

Dehydrated Discs are part of the normal aging process. As you are already in Physiotherapy, then ask the Physiotherapist to refer you to a Occupational Therapist and they will first measure you up for a chair and then recommend a place where you can purchase one. As for cheap chair, no such thing. However you can buy chair supports but again you need to ask PT or OT for the best type for your problem. Best of Luck  (+ info)

Are there any good low back pain exercises?

I've just started golfing and my back gets pretty sore after 18 holes. Are there any back pain exercises or other home remedies that could help me get back in shape quickly?
----------

I suffer from low back pain when I sit at my computer too long. Certainly the hot packs, cold packs, and pain ointments help. I have an infra red massager that helps as well.

It used to be that doctors recommended bed rest. However, it was found that the muscles just tightened up and it took longer to get over the pain. Now they are recommending light exercise and moderate activity to loosen up the muscles quicker. One exercise that helps is when you stretch your lumbar muscles by getting on your hands and knees with your hands under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Let your head hang down and arch your back towards the ceiling and hold it for five seconds. Repeat 10 times or so per session. This is only one of several lower back exercises that will help.

Back pain exercises are meant for strained muscles and ligaments. If you have a slipped disc or pinched nerves exercises might make the problem worse.  (+ info)

What causes sudden and severe low back pain?

I'm in good shape and in my mid 30's but over the past year I have, for no discernible reason, been hit (all of a sudden and on 2 different occasions) with debilitating lower back pain that just cripples me for days and then goes away.
----------

You might have spinal vertabrae out of place, or you might have something else going on, like gallbladder disease - that often causes back problems - or even kidney stones which will hurt your mid- to lower back.  (+ info)

Why and how to cure low back pain after basketball workouts?

2 days ago i had pain in the lower back. I can't bend very well without pain. Does anyone know anything about it???
----------

We need more information. Exactly at what point can you bend your back without pain? (Flexion and extension measurements?) Do you feel any pain going down your thigh? (which is a sign of radiculopathy of the spine). Can you rotate your back? How much do you weigh? How long are your workouts?

It sounds like you have a back strain but you may want to see an orthopedic physician and do an MRI if the injury gets worse.

Good luck.  (+ info)

When pregnant, in the third trimester, is a low back pain always something to be worried about?

I'm 29 weeks. I have a low pain in my back. Should I be worried or just take it in stride?
----------

Unless its really sharp pain it is probably just achiness from the extra weight and position of the baby. You'll know if its something to be worried about. Usually a constant ache is just body soreness, but if it comes and goes with different intensities I would call the doctor to be safe : )  (+ info)

What can my husband do for his chronic low back pain?

On my husbands MRI it said Large Herniated Disk( L4). All the doctor has done for him is give him pain killers. There has to be something eles he can do . The doctor also said he is to young for back surgery so all he has done is write him pain pills every month there after. There has to be something eles besides having to take pills for the rest of his life. I really hate feeling so helpless. When he is in pain its chronic. It really hurts me because I cant take the pain away. I would give him my back in a second. Thanks to anyone who can give some helping words.

He definately needs to find a good pain management specialist and sounds like he might benefit from some PT IF and I put that in caps they are affiliated with pain management and can show ways to decompress the area and strengthen around it.

Here are a few tricks that have helped me greatly (and I have disc problems, nerve damage and a clearing list of low back hell).

First, hang a towel over a door (and make sure it's a sturdy door lol). Have him grasp on it and slowly move his weight to it so he is decompressing the spine. This can bring major relief in a hurry, but it is temporary, as are most of these things sadly. But hey, they get me through the day, and I find pain meds alone definately don't do it.

Next thing I highly recommend and couldn't live without it one of those heat/massage pads. I have one in my car, one on my desk chair, and a full length chair with one built in in the living room (that was a miracle find at Costco...it was either buy that chair or move into Costco..and it was under a hundred!). If you shop around for the cushions you should find good deals on them. I got really nice homedic ones for under $20. Now they also have many different varieties so he might want to see what feels best. For me the main element is heat. This has made me been ok to drive when I didn't think I could....I highly recommend these.

I found a hand held infrared heat unit on sale so gave that a shot. I've found it really helps on bad days. I tried a more expensive TENS unit that my insurance didn't cover and while it gave some temporary relief it wasn't much better than these other things. I'd see if your insurance would at least give a trial of one of these units to see if it helps him.

Last, I don't suppose you guys have a jacuzzi? That was one of the reasons I bought this house and it has saved me some days. If not if you can afford it I'd look into it or save for one. They are awesome to relax anways, but some nights when I am near crawling out of my skin in pain a long soak with the jets makes it livable.

Oh one more trick.....sometimes I have found laying flat on a hard floor and half sitting up or turning sideways until it sort of pops/feels like it aligns can help. I have several types of back pan as I said and that helps one. The other tips seem to help all.

I wish him the very best. I can tell you with 100% certainty a good pain specialist who will adjust medications and use other modalities can help a lot. I've had a bad pain md, the best in the world, and now he's away I have someone ok. I know all to well the difference they make. So best of luck in finding one of the good ones. Be sure to check the sites for the major pain management accreditions (I'll list below), and I'd suggest starting there. The first one lists accredited MD in each state.

And make sure he knows that with legitimate pain there is virtually no risk of addiction to pain medication. The body becomes chemically dependant, but you are not addicted (nor get the euphoria that comes with an addiction). Less than 1% of those taking pain meds have any problems with this. There are tons of sites and resources, and a few great pain forums so I'd suggest you both go exploring!!

Best of luck to you both and let me know if I can be of any more help...I've been playing the home game on this for too many years now. Sigh.  (+ info)
