Malignant Hyperthermia?

First cousin once removed has malignant hyperthermia. What are my chances of having it? Should I wear a medical bracelet?
----------

You should be tested: Malignant Hyperthermia is a rapidly progressive, potentially lethal problem a patient may experience unexpectedly when exposed to certain anesthetic agents. There may be no knowledge of susceptibility and it may occur in any setting that these agents are used. Successful treatment of MH depends on early recognition of signs and symptoms and rapid implementation of treatment. Minutes matter in the treatment and multiple tasks need to be accomplished rapidly. Without emergency therapy for MH the patient has a greater than 85% chance of death. Malignant Hyperthermia and epidurals during birth?

I have a condition called Malignant Hyperthermia, although I don't really know a lot about it.
I know I can't have certain anesthetics.
If I am having a baby, can I have an epidural?
----------

No I don't think they would consider this. However there are "different" types of medication they can put in your epidural, so I would think you would need to ask the doctor. Hyperthermia is an increased elevation in body temperature like a fever. When you receive anesthesia this will offset this condition. You will have increased oxygen input, and increased temperature which can lead to death. With something like having a baby, I would go with pain meds or a natural delivery. You don't want to hurt/kill yourself or the baby.

Survival rate of a Malignant Hyperthermia episode?

Please tell me everything you know about this disorder. I keep on searching for it on google but the big words are just too baffling for me.
Does anyone know the survival rate?

I am 16 and recently spent a week in the hospital after an MH episode, but they didnt inform me enough about it. Can you guys please help.

(please keep your answers easy to understand, sorry the whole thing is just a little confusing for me)
----------

Most everyone "survives" an episode of this because there is medication to treat this reaction to anesthesia. And, you avoid the anesthetic drug in the future that caused this problem. You can go to WebMd.com and type in malignant hyperthermia and read up on this which is written in an easy to understand format. All you need to remember is the term and the anesthetic drug that was used which caused the problem for future information to other health care providers.  (+ info)

Anybody know what malignant hyperthermia is?

does anybody out there have this desease also,my husband has it(he hasnt been tested but 3 of his sisters have tested positive ) Im worried of my children having it and the effect it might have on them
----------

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder in which affected individuals are susceptible to adverse reactions to certain anesthetic drugs. The drugs that trigger malignant hyperthermia are the volatile inhalation gases including sevoflurane, desflurane, isoflurane, halothane, enflurane, methoxyflurane and depolarizing muscle relaxants such a succinylcholine. The characteristics of a malignant hyperthermia episode are variable and include muscle rigidity, high blood pressure (hypertension) increased levels of carbon monoxide in blood or exhaled gas, rapid irregular heart rate, rapid deep breathing, blue skin, acidity of the blood and muscle damage. Body temperature can rise rapidly (hyperthermia), but sometimes only occurs late in an episode. When an episode is not recognized and treated, internal bleeding, brain damage, skeletal muscle degeneration (rhabdomyolysis), and kidney and heart failure can result.  (+ info)

what is malignant hyperthermia?

Malignant hypothermia is caused by a mutation in the Ryanodine Receptor on the Sarcoplasmic Reticulum in muscle cells.

When certain general anaesthetics are administered (such and isoflurane and enflurane) they cause the mutant Ryanodine receptor to open. The RyR is a ligand gated calcium channel and the unnatural opening of it causes massive activation of the sarcomeres in the skeletal muscle. This leads to bodywide spasms and a huge increase in heat generated by the body (think: exercising makes you hot as well). This can be fatal as you are still under anaesthetic.

Another RyR-related disease is Myasthenia Gravis in which the RyR is poorly expressed at the genetic level due to an autoimmune reaction. It causes permanent lethargy.  (+ info)
