You are right it's a relatively rare disease. It's genetic and is most often seen in Mennonites.
Your daughter has an inability to process certain chemicals. Her urine would smell like carmelized sugar, thus the name of the disease. It is treatable.
Graves disease is hyperthyroidism. Graves disease means that all the processes in your daughter's body are speeded up. Her heart beats faster, her metabolism is faster, and so forth. Medication can easily eliminate the symptoms of the disease.
When you have questions, you should ask your daughter's doctor. Ask them to explain to you what's going in terms that you can understand. If they are a good doctor, they should take the time to explain it to you to your satisfaction.

If you knew that it was also called Menkes Disease, you might have also known it was discovered by John Menkes, in 1954. It came up in some class I had in biochemistry....I wouldn't expect most folks to know that, I just got lucky in an odd way.

The protein complex is essential for breaking down the amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine, which are present in many kinds of food (particularly protein-rich foods such as milk, meat, and eggs).
Mutations in any of these four genes reduce or eliminate the function of the protein complex, preventing the normal breakdown of leucine, isoleucine, and valine. As a result, these amino acids and their byproducts build up in the body. Because high levels of these substances are toxic to the brain and other organs, their accumulation leads to the serious medical problems associated with maple syrup urine disease. (

She is currently on a liver transplant list, it will be a year at the end of the month. We will be staying in Pittsburg Pa for up to 3 months, she will also be giving her liver to someone else.
