What is the advantage of overt menstruation over covert menstruation?

Overt menstruation, in case you don't know, is menstruation which involves bleeding from the vagina.
Covert menstruation is where the uterine lining (endometrium) is reabsorbed.

It seems there is no real benefit in overt menstruation so why didn't we evolve with covert menstruation?
----------

Both overt menstruation and covert menstruation, the majority of the endometrium is reabsorbed. Why do humans and great apes experience overt menstruation? Some speculate that the sophistication and size of the endometrium required to support a human and great ape fetus. It may simply be too large to be reabsorbed, and the excess material is expelled via overt menstruation.
Because of this blood loss, premenopausal women have higher dietary requirements for iron
Humans do, in fact, reabsorb about two-thirds of the endometrium each cycle.  (+ info)

What kinds of food make menstruation more painful?

I am on my period, and it's been extremely painful. My mom says it's probably because I ate a lot of sugar last week, as I tend to stress-eat during finals week. Is it true that sugar can make menstruation more painful? What other foods make menstruation more painful?
----------

Sugary foods do tend to make periods a little more uncomfortable. Eating fresh fruit and vegetables and exercising regularly can relieve period cramps and pains.  (+ info)

What are the causes and remedy for abnormal menstruation?

My girlfriend, has abnormal menstruation, she have experienced almost a month or half a year, in mestruation only? Actually, during this time, the blood seems, just spots, but it is constantly occuring but just in small amounts. It is continous, and the highest time it occured is almost half a year? What are the causes of these and what is the remedy?
----------

This is much too complex an issue to address in this forum. There are many reasons for disturbances in the menstrual cycle and the treatments would not all be the same. It could be hormonal, it could be a physical issue, it could be her diet, it could be something else entirely. There's no point in guessing.

She should see her OB/GYN; that's the only way to figure out what's really going on.  (+ info)

Will a tubal ligation reduce the occurence of retrograde menstruation?

I usually get a nasty episode of retrograde menstruation about once a year. I'm also currently looking into have a tubal ligation to stop any more babies!
Theoretically speaking, should having my tubes tied/cut stop retrograde menstruation from happening?
----------

No, a tubal ligation is cutting, blocking, or tying the fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes cary the egg to the uterus where it would implant into the endometrium etc etc... The tubal ligation will not effect the uterus nor the menstrual cycle. Only a hysterectomy (removing the uterus) or endometrial ablation (causing scar tissue inside the uterus) will stop or reduce menstrual flow. I'm sorry, but your stuck with it until you're menopausal.  (+ info)

What medicine to take to stop menstruation for a month and a half?

My girlfriend is in her early 30s and she has to attend a religious retreat and needs to stop her menstruation for a month and a half, is there any medication she can take for this?
----------

Why on earth would she want to stop her natural cycle? I'm sure that some hormone prescription would probably do the trick but I highly doubt that is going to be good for her overall health. This process happens naturally because it is supposed to.  (+ info)

What is the good side and bad side of masturbation and menstruation?

What is the particular exact definition of male and female masturbation? What is the benefit and bad side of masturbation and menstruation?
----------

Menstruation is just the fancy word for a woman's period. The good parts of menstruation are that you know the girl isn't pregnant, that the woman's mood generally stabilizes after her menstrual flow begins (if she's been PMSing,) and that it is a symbol of fertility. On the other hand, some women get reeeeeeeeeally crabby on their period. They get all sorts of awful symptoms from nausea to cramps and bloating and insomnia. Mood swings, migraines, leg cramps, ick. The good news is that you can easily fix those symptoms :)

Masturbation benefits a person by providing sexual satisfaction, which has been proven to increase a person's sense of well-being because of the endorphins and dopamines released by the brain during climax. If you masturbate or participate in sexual activity with someone else, an added benefit is that through sex play, you can really bond with that person. I guess that you could say that a downside of masturbation is that it can be addictive. Another downside for people who experience multiple orgasms is that they can occasionally get tension headaches as a result of pulling off the multiples.

Actually, masturbation is an excellent way to relieve menstrual cramps. :)  (+ info)

What's the difference between implantation bleeding and menstruation?

8 hours ago, I found my pantyliner soaked with dirty blood. Or at least I think it is. It seemed a little heavy not like the I.B. described on the internet. I had to change and use a napkin. I still feel droplets of blood dripping. I'm also feeling slight cramming. Could this be an implantation bleeding or menstruation?
----------

It's probably more like menstruation. Implantation bleeding is generally much lighter, really just like a little spotting. Is this your first period? if it is your period, regular menstrual bleeding, you will need to keep a pad in there (not just a pantyliner), changing it every few hours, for at least a few days. nothing to be scared of, but you do need to stay on top of it if you don't want your clothes to get stained.  (+ info)
