What types of mental illnesses are linked to poor hygiene?

What specific mental illnesses attribute to poor hygiene (avoiding showers, neglecting teeth) and poor housekeeping (letting dishes pile up, letting trash stay in the floor for weeks)??
----------

i just recently found out that the avoidance of showers for a lot of people is their way to self preserve themselves~ie;; I smell bad enough they won't bother me~i have a God son that we just recently found out was raped when he was 6 he is 17 now & has kept this all to himself~counselors where he was @ say that is one of the 1st signs of sexual abuse is not showering also staying awake till everyone else is asleep ~ is also a defense mechanism to make sure all predators are out for the night~the teeth go along with the showering~the worse you look & smell the least likely in their eyes they'll be attacked again~btw he has been diagnosed with ptsd~depression~and bpd♦  (+ info)

Is compulsive lying for attention linked to any mental disorders?

For instance, is there a particular disorder in which a person will do just about anything to get some sort of attention?

I know of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, are there any others similar to this?
----------

Hey, I've often wondered the same thing, so I googled it and this is one of the better website that I've found:

http://www.bullyonline.org/workbully/attent.htm

It also mentions the Munchausen that you said along with the original syndrome that by Proxy stems from. It looks like they classify them according to the role they tend to play when seeking behavior (the savior, the sufferer, the rescuer, etc.). I thought that was pretty interesting.

Narcissism also can manifest itself in this way. You can also check out information on Histrionic disorder, which includes a very overly-dramatic and emotional sense. Here's the wikipedia site for that:

Delusions of Grandeur linked to mental disorder?

Do delusions of grandeur have to be linked to a mental disorder or can some people have it without a mental disorder? also are/can delusions of grandeur linked to depression? ADHD?
I'm not asking for advice for myself i just wanted to know the answer. Also, can delusions of grandeur be present along with low self-esteem?
----------

You know what...no one can give you an educated answer with out some more information. Letting one of us give you a "label" can be worse than not knowing what is really wrong. "Delusions of Grandeur" can mean different things to different people. If you strongly believe that you are more important and secretly special than anyone else...that means one thing..if you are just a jerk who thinks he's "intitled" thats another, or perhaps your just very intelligent and know your self well. One is a mental disorder and one is a personality issue....you have posed a very good and interesting question..don't you think it would be of great benifit to yourself (and loved ones) to go to a professional therapist, counselor, or doctor?  (+ info)

Does anyone know where I can find info on the chromosones or dna strands that may be linked to mental illness?

For example I have seen pictures of my baby's chromosones which showed triploidy kareotype 69xxy. In looking in to such things I have learnt that a tiny mistake in the chromosone structure can cause mental disabilities such as down syndrome. I am studying psychology and reading about the genetics of inherited or likely to be passed down mental illnesses such as schizophrenic disorders, and ADHD which has like a 99percent chance of being passed from parent to child. If I looked at someone's chromosone structure who had mental illness such as Borderline personality disorder, depression etc would I be able to see a difference in the chromosones compared to a person who does not have mental illness, if so can anyone tell me where to find this information?
----------

They're getting closer to finding the exact location of the genes for things like bipolar disorder and depression, but they're not there yet. However, the disorders are not exclusively genetic, so mapping the entire genome can only do so much. Things like Borderline Personality Disorder don't have much of a genetic component and are based more in early life events.  (+ info)

Is the choice of gray as a favorite color in any way linked to mental disorder?

I read somewhere that gray was commonly chosen as the favorite color of people with a certain mental disorder that I don't remember. Has anyone heard anything along those lines?
----------

No, I have my masters in mental health counseling. Who ever told you that was misinformed.  (+ info)

Is emotional abuse linked to mental illness?

Suffered with depression for a little over 10 years and also (mild) OCD and anxiety.

Looking back at my childhood, I'm starting to realise that I may have been emotionally abused by a parent when I was growing up. Actually I have often thought this but put it to the back of my mind because it's hurts too much to know that this is true.

Is it possible that this could be the cause of my mental issues?

very much so forgiveness may play a big role in your healing here learning to forgive
we do all of this and get results

All treatment recommended by the doctors should be tested and approved and quite rightly so.
That makes sense right Obviously it costs vast sums of money to test and approve treatments because of the possible damage to people and the subsequent litigation costing millions of pounds.
Drug companies Fund most research and only and I mean only look at treatments, which show the promise of good deal of a profit, will even get examined. …….and thus other therapies do not get recommended by your local doctor or hospital. Despite The fact that some of them do have overwhelming benefits some, which have saved needless operations, needless amputations, needless pain and trauma, needless kidney failures and much loss of life. Drugs are not the answer for depression with mind altering chemicals or any other mental ill ness
This does not help you does it though. when you are ill and suffering—not hearing about therapies which can help from a person you look up to and trust Have you heard your local doctor recommend, Massage Spiritual healing, Knieisiology Herbs, Light therapy,Colour therapy,Regression therapy, Osteopathy,Magnetic devices, Electrical Frequency devices.

Depression protocol but these therapies will work for many complaints of a so called mental nature
my research centers around the teachings and study of the Edgar cayce material , with added principles where appropriate. we have thousands of testimonials and results showing years of successful applications of the Edgar cayce material. Please make no assumptions or cast aspersions unless you have studied the material at hand .
Do this and I will guarantee improvements to you inside a day its that simple, of course getting these things in place can be much harder. But we have personnel experience of the effectiveness of them and they do work. Every one of them can have a very beneficial influence on you.
Print this all off save it and enact it and share it --- of course someone to help you get these therapies in your life is invaluable but do not be swayed by them trying for short cuts ….
1,get someone to massage your back and legs at least 3 times a week use peanut oil or a mix of 50-50 olive and peanut oil.
2 use the violet ray machine an edgar cayce device google search this --- 3 times a week on the other days especially on the spine….we use it every day with very positive results
3.get a tent sleep out side 3times a week utilising earth energy - nature can help big time especially with how you feel how much energy you have
4 study and apply good nutrition adequate minerals all of them particularly calcium and magnesium iron essential fatty acids as well omega 3 6 9 protein etc
5 ensure your thyroid is working well
7 ensure you do at least I hr per day some kind of voluntary work when you are able..the reasons you are ill , or poor or have allsorts of bad things happen to you is because of karma -----usually from past lives but some from this one –voluntary work will offset your mistakes--- how much it offsets well that is down to god and how much you do. Healing us is in direct proportion to the help we give others ie your healing comes with helping others achieve theirs so if people are doing very little in helping others ---they suffer more and longer...and if they are doing a lot they get well faster....so now you know what to do ,,and like a lot of us are already doing being of service.

can an obsession with garbage be linked to a mental illness?

Long story short, I have a "friend" who can't keep himself out of trash dumpsters! Me and my crew were walking along the sidewalk, looking for "steve". We heard some ruffling in the dumpster near by, and low and behold, look who it is.... steve. he was "chest deep" in garbage. he was always like this, he says that garbage has a special place in his heart. what's wrong with him? and, can he get help? thanks.
Oddly enough, he also has a striking resemblance to Joseph Stawinoga!
----------

It is dangerous to jump into garbage bins, he could get pricked by a discarded needle or cut on something sharp within a garbage bag.

What the hell is he trying to find? He must have some mental illness. If he is trying to find something valuable that was tossed out, tell him to buy a metal detector instead and look for buried treasure. He will mostly find junk and bottle caps but you never know. I read a story the other day about someone in England finding millions worth of treasure buried in a field.  (+ info)

How are neurotransmitters linked to mental illnesses?

For many mental illnesses, there is either too high a level of a neurotransmitter or a group of them, or levels are too low. For example, we think schizophrenia is linked to too high OR too low levels of dopamine, but we still know very little. Clinical depression is related to low levels and activity of serotonin, dopamine and norephinephrine. Some mental illnesses are caused by degeneration of cells (permanent brain damage.) HOWEVER, in both cases, the effect is the same; either too low levels or too high levels or a neurotransmitter. If a cell is damaged, it cannot perform its function properly, so in most cases it will not be able to release as much neurotransmitter substance as it usually does. Did that makes sense? I hope so, hehe. In other words, mental illness is caused by an imbalance in neurotransmitter substances.  (+ info)

is heartbeat somehow linked with mental health ?

my heart feels pretty like heavy and too sensitive, it`s uncomfortable to sleep on the left side... could this be linked to mental health ? well i feel like i have lost myself, the one that lives
----------

Sometimes depression or anxiety can cause physical sensations, like a "hole in your chest" feeling. There is a reason that so many people describe losing a loved one as having a broken heart - it actually hurts, in your chest, like a hollow ache.

However, you should NOT just assume that your chest pain is related to your mental health status. Any time you have ongoing chest pain, you need to be seen by a doctor. Especially since it is uncomfortable for you to sleep on your left side, that does not strike me as a mental health problem, that sounds like something actually going on in your chest. I think you should make an appointment with your general doctor right away and tell them what's been going on. They may refer you to a cardiologist who can do what is called an echocardiogram, which is a sonogram (what they do to look at babies inside of pregnant women) but to look at your heart instead. They may also do an EKG, which measures your heartbeat and the electric pulses in your heart.

If they determine that there is nothing physically wrong with your heart or lungs, then you can start thinking about whether or not it has to do with a mental illness. But you really need to rule out physical causes first. Better safe than sorry.

Good luck!  (+ info)
