What disorders and diseases are associated with migraine headaches?

Also if applicable can you list the other symptoms. I am looking for things to ask my doctor about next time I go in, because I found things to explain my other symptoms but not the migraines. The disease/disorder can be immune, autoimmune, deficiency, etc etc etc. Thank you!
----------

I have an auto immune disease that can be a big cause of Migraines. It is Antiphospholipid syndrome.

What caused me to wake up with a migraine?

I took a nap today and I got woke up by throbbing pain from a migraine. I do suffer from migraines but this was like the mother of all migraines. I dont have any sleeping disorders to cause them either. I looked up a few things that might have caused it but none of them described me. Any suggestions?
----------

i have had migraines for years, but only 2 or 3 of them were so bad that they were to the point if i moved even an inch, i would throw up from being so nauseous. What usually trigger them for me is not eating/drinking enough, hot weather, or i just get them every 4 months about. No medications work for me, but there is one cure. If you can fall asleep, you will wake up and it will be gone.

Another way to get rid of it, (as weird as this will sound) is the smell of a skunk. Once time i was driving home with one, smelt a very strong skunk smell, and it was gone. I know how weird that sounds.  (+ info)

For treatment of migraine and nueorological diagnosis?

Christian medical college(Vellore) and NIMHANS(Bangalore), which of these two institutes are better for the treatment of migraine and diagnosis of some other neurological disorders? The patient has been already diagnosed with migraine, would like to obtain treatment for it,please suggest which institute is better?CMC Vellore or NIMHANS Bangalore?I would like to have suggestions regarding some other medical institutes or organisations, that are renouned for this kind of treatment, provided it is in India.
----------

These are both good hospitals so I can't really say. But I do know that NIMHANS is supposed to be THE neurological place in India. However, ultimately I think it is not so much which hospital you must choose but which doctor. Try to ask around and see who is a highly recommended and experienced doctor in this field. (Sorry but I don't know more than that .. )  (+ info)

Is there an underline disorder that migraine can be a symptom for?

I have been suffering migraines weekly(almost daily) for 7-8 years. I'm sick of it, and was wondering if there could be something else wrong. I've tried almost everything, preventative and taking something when I get one. The Imitrex works, but nothing is preventing them.

Can anyone help me?
----------

A person who has migraine should be aware of the following.

1. If there is a change from the normal pattern should immediately inform a doctor.
a. the pain is severe and abrupt like a thunder clap
b. fever, stiff neck, mental confusion, seizures, double vision, weakness of a limb or one half of the body, difficulty in speaking
c. Chronic headache worse after coughing, exertion , strain

2, Those who are having Migraine with Aura are at risk of stroke, and this is increased if there is high blood pressure or if they are smoking.

3. Migraine may be associated with an intracranial tumor and because the patient may ignore the symptoms the intra cranial tumor may be ignored.

It is very important that if any change from the normal pattern occurs
further investigations like CT scan, MRI have to be done.

Migraine like symptoms can occur in other disorders but then the normal pattern that you are used to changes. The danger is that the change may pass unnoticed.
Unlike classical migraine Migraine with Aura is a risk for later stroke (see above)

Since you have had 8 years of Migraine it is best to consult a doctor again and for purpose of gaining self confidence, get the brain investigations done.

I have been studying stress related disorders for my research.?

The list is so wide and complex. Chronic Fatigue syndrome , Fibromyalgia , Somatoform disorders , headache , migraine , skin disorders like itching , scaling of skin , psoriasis , heart trouble , blood pressure , diabetes , elevated cholesterol , acidity , Irritable bowel syndrome , sexual dysfunction , joint pains , reduced immunity system and associated disorders and the list can go on where the stress contributes substantially in case of these disorders. Problem is that there is no quick solution and the worst part is most of the doctors do not take cognizance of the psychological factor in treating these disorders and just treat symptoms.
----------

i agree with you, but i am unsure what you are asking.
my mom has Fibromyalgia and could hardly even get any information from her doctor. many support groups and doctors later (and 13+ years) she has learned enough about it and how to manage it. she couldn't get a doctor to prescribe more than something for pain. which is actually not advisable for obvious reasons.
diet is important. when she changed her diet -not sure of everything she has done but i know fish oil is in there *gag*- she noticed a huge difference in how often she was down and out. and she even had high energy levels.
in her research she found that this disease can not only be a product of stress but lacking the proper type of sleep. -where i think sleeping pills that are specific to the need might actually help prevent this disease by treating sleep disorders early. and who knows, maybe it would even take care of symptoms by giving the body something it is lacking after the condition has already set in.

i imagine a lot of other conditions and diseases could be handled more appropriately if the underlying issue was dealt with and not just the symptoms.

so that's my 2 cents, not too sure what you were asking though :)  (+ info)

What is the best migraine medication you have tried, and why is it the best?

I've had migraines off and on for years, due to a car accident. The last 2 years, the migraines have cropped up more often and my doctor will prescribe a migraine med for me to have on hand. The problem is, she says that they are all very similar.

So, the question for yahoo users is, in your personal migraine experiences, what prescription migraine medication worked best, and were there side effects, etc?

Thanks!
----------

I have had migraines for 30 years. None are the best. The question is in finding the best one for you. You are the only one who can determine that. Ask the Doc. to prescribe the migraine abortive medications one at a time until you find the one that works best for you.

I personally use Imitrex. I have also tried Maxalt, Zomig and all of the others that I don't remember the names of. Imitrex has been the best for me.

The key with any of these is to take them immediately, as soon as you realize that the pain is coming or expect that it is heading to migraine level. If you wait until you have a full blown migraine, no medication will work.

Keep a daily headache diary when you try the new meds. At the end of a few days, or weeks depending on how often you get them, you will have the details for the Doctor. Help them to help you.

Best of luck.  (+ info)

How can I relieve a migraine without medicines?

I get slight migraines when my body is under stress. Like when I'm working too hard, my sinuses are acting up, I'm worrying too much. What are things I can do to make my head feel better? It feels like there's a ring around my head and someone is pushing down on it. I took migraine medicine years ago, but I'm seeking new solutions.
----------

This sounds more like a tension headache than a migraine... usually improved by massaging back of neck to ease tight muscles, and maybe using some of that "4-Head" stick available from chemists, not medicine but aromatherapy I think.
Hope you find your solution  (+ info)

What's the longest a migraine usually lasts and is numbness on the side of your head a migraine symptom?

I've had a migraine for two weeks now and the pain is mostly near my eyes, but not really both sides of my head at the same time. Sometimes it feels numb, other times a sharp stabbing pain, and sometimes a dull throbbing pain. I have a history of head injuries and concussions and my mother died of a brain tumor. Because of my history, is it normal that I should have such bad headaches or should I see a doctor?
----------

Based on your symptoms and family history, please see a doctor, soon! A neurologist would be best. If you need a referral, see your primary care doctor first explain everything you did above to them and ask for a referral to a neurologist.  (+ info)

What is the most efficacious treatment for migraine headaches?

Migraine headaches is the biggest source of chronic pain. There is however a very thin line of distinction between Cervicogenic, Migraine and Tension headaches. I reckon drugs are the first line of defence however do other forms of treatment like physiotherapy help at all .
----------

to be honest, i dont know about physiotherapy. i suffered from migraines for years until i was refered to a "headache specialist", not a "neurologist", but a headache specialist, after my initial consultation, she felt that my migraines were caused by a vitamin deficiency, she ordered tests, and sure enough, B12 deficient.
ever since then, i take 1000 mcg of B12 every day and have not even had so much as a hint of a headache since then.
it might be something worth checking out for you.  (+ info)

What can i do to relieve my migraine headaches ?

My migraine headaches hurts so bad, my medications i took are not helping at all. Is there anything i could do to relieve my migraine headaches.
----------

Migraine headaches can be the worst if not addressed immedeatly. Here are a couple of helpful hints, that I hope you find useful: 1) Immedeatly focus on relaxing... running the thoughts of stress or fear in your brain will not assist in this, the easiest way is 3 deep breaths, each one a little deeper than before, we also don't want you to pass out! 2) close your eyes and start to visualize! Imagine you have a small camera inside of your own head and begin to inspect that area that is causing you the most amount of discomfort, what shape is it, what colour do you see, is it smooth or jagged along the edges, and as you notice the particulars of this discomfort, then start to take a look at a part of your head/ brain that feels perfectly fine. Migraines very rarely effect or occupy the entire head so there is usually a part if the head/brain that does feel "normal" as you notice the same qualities about that part of your head you can now begin to become creative in making the "two area" the same... preferabbly the area of discomfort the same as the part that feels normal!

Be Well
