How long to live now having morphine through syringe driver?

I know someone who has cancer and has just been put on a syringe driver with morphine. Does anyone know if this indicates the worst is closely looming?
----------

A terminal cancer patient will be given whatever they need for pain relief, or just to help them through, as addiction wont be a problem, usually becasue they havnt got enough time to get addicted, so yeah its not a good sign I'm afraid..  (+ info)

I failed a UA for morphine and I have not used any morphine or any like substance. How does this happen?

I am clean, have no desire to use morphine or anything like it. I failed which which will cause a lotof legal problems that will affect my college and job. Is something that can be re-evaluated? What do I do and what are my options in this situation when I know I haven't used?
----------

For the record, you have to eat about 25 poppy seed bagels to get even a blip on the reading. Do you have an unnaturally high level of endorphins? You can always appeal. Labs are not fail proof, there are possibilities of switched samples, poor reagents, any of a list of things can go wrong. Get it appealed, get retested, or get a lawyer.

I just remembered, did you have any dental work? Novicane will show up on the test as an opiate.

Good Luck,

How often i can take 30mg of morphine tablets?

I would like to know if I can take more of my medication because I am still in pain. I took 30mg of morphine at 930pm, and would like to know how soon I may take more.
----------

Since we don't know how used to morphine your body is we cant advise you on this. If you are not used to this medication you can OD very easily. Stick to what the prescription says to take, if you are still in too much pain in the morning call your doctor and ask what you can do, or what else you can take along with it such as Aleve.  (+ info)

What will morphine feel like during labour?

I remember my mum having morphine with my youngest sister and she was puking up bile and was still in so much pain. I'm pregnant in December and very scared about the side effects of the pain reliefs.

Thanks!

Hi Hun,

Best advice I was given was to start from the bottom of pain relief and work yourself up.

I started with the gas and air -Entonox - this made me feel light headed - almost like I was drunk. This helped me during the beginning of the contractions. Only downside is that if you use it often, your mouth and lips can become very dry so remember to sip water inbetween and take a lip salve like vasaline too.

I then started with the Pethadine - this was given by an injection in my leg - I went up to Pethadine as pain relief because the gas and air was no longer working for me. This can be used during the first stage of labour when contractions open up the cervix or neck of the womb to 10cm to allow birth within a couple of hours. I had a very bad reaction to the pethadine, it made me incredibly drowzy and out of control - a horrible feeling - because of this it made the baby drowsy too and my daughter had to have blood taken from her head whilst she was still inside me.

Due to the bad reaction the doctors decided it was either an epidural to bring baby out and if I didn't react well to the epidural they were going to go for an emergency c-section.

I had the epidural inserted into my back and then felt numb - due to the pethadine too I fell asleep. An hour later I woke up saying I felt I needed to push - the nurse examined me and I had gone from 5cm to 10cm in a hour. I didn't feel any pain at all as was completely numb. They had to cut me in order to help my daughter out - again I didn't feel this as completely numb - 3 pushes and feeling tugging - they had to use forceps - and my daughter was born - I didn't feel any pain at all.

Epidural are good and I here that side effects are that it can give women some bad headaches - i didn't have this.

Remenber too - if you have a water-birth you can only use gas and air and would have to come out the pool to have other forms of pain relief. Also in a birth centre they may only give you pethadine, if you decide you want anything stronger, they will move you down to the delivery ward.

Every women is different though - I used all the forms of pain relief whilst my friend found gas and air worked well with her and didn't have any other forms of pain relief.
It has to be your choice and request anything you need and keep an open mind.

Is it bad to mix alcohol with morphine? How dangerous (is it?) ? On a scale of one to ten and why?

How much alcohol is safe to be consumed when on 10-15mg of morphine a day?
What could happen if you do mix it? I'm asking because my mother used to drink a couple of glasses of wine a night, then she had to go on morphine, along with many other medications, so she stopped drinking altogether. Just recently, she has begun drinking vodka, while she is still on morphine. Im not sure how much she drinks at once, but I do know it is about a 2 litre bottle a week, and she is on 10-15 mg of morphine a day. She is doing it secretly in the middle of the night, and I am really starting to get worried about her. Her whole demeanor has changed. She doesn't know I know about it, and if I told anyone, She would never let go of the 'betrayal'. I really don't know what to do. I truly just need some advice from a third party. Should I actually be this concerned about her, or am I just overreacting? Thank you for your time. God bless.

NO amount of alcohol is safe with morphine. Both alcohol and morphine depress the Central Nervous System, and a combination of the two can be fatal.  (+ info)

What is the difference between heroin, opium and morphine, in simple terms?

I think I am right to say they are all derived from the opium poppy? And that opium came first, followed by heroin...and that morphine is basically just 'clean' heroin...have I got this at all right?
----------

Opium has gradually been superseded by a variety of purified, semi-synthetic, and synthetic opioids with progressively stronger effect.

This process began in 1817, when Friedrich Wilhelm Adam Sertürner reported the isolation of pure morphine from opium
The great advantage of purified morphine was that a patient could be treated with a known dose.

Heroin, the first semi-synthetic opiate, was first synthesized in 1874, but was not pursued until its rediscovery by in 1897 by Felix Hoffmann at the Bayer pharmaceutical company in Elberfeld, Germany. From 1898 through to 1910 heroin was marketed as a non-addictive morphine substitute and cough medicine for children.

Heroine is about 1.5 to 2 times more potent than morphine.
Heroine is morphine with 2 acetyl groups added.

Opium is the latex from the opium poppy pods. It's the raw product. It drips out of the pod milky white, and then dries to brown and is collected.  (+ info)

What will the difference be from morphine to dilaudid?

I have tirated down from 140 mg of morphine to 45mg a day. I am now going in for surgery and they are going to put me on dilaudid. I liked to know what the diffference is and will I enjoy a "buzz?" I never caught a buzz from the morphine which was prescribed to be for a back injury, the surgery I am to undergo is to remove the upper lobe of my left lung.
----------

Morphine is completely derived from opium, while Dilaudid is partialy synthetic. The biggest differences are that Dilaudid is less likely to cause significant nausia and is less likely to cause dependence.

If you didn't get a buzz from Morphine, you probably won't get a reaction from Dilaudid. Generally, if you take either drug as perscribed, you aren't going to get much of a buzz.  (+ info)

Can Morphine Use that prescribed by doctor cause uncontrollable bowel movements?

Can Morphine Use that was prescribed by doctor cause uncontrollable bowel movements? Or can it cause nervouse system disorder? If you have any side effects that you have had towards morphine, please reply...... Thank you!
----------

ACTUALLY...no. I was on it for 6 months following back surgery several years ago..and it made me HORRIBLY constipated. All opiate painkillers do this. They slow down digestion, and the nerve impulses that move food along the digestive tract (causing more liquids to be drawn out of you know what, than should be).

No side effects from morphine, other than dependence (notice I didn't say addiction.) After awhile, my body/brain became unable to release its own endorphines (that are usually secreted in response to pain) so I did go through withdrawl symptoms as I was weaned off of the morphine (my body did a "mad scramble" to figure out how to pick up where the morphine had left off). I DIDN'T, however, have any cravings for the drug. It made me rather sleepy all the time, and while it was welcomed relief from the pain..I couldn't get much done around the house if I was in bed all day sleeping.

All in all, its a wonder drug for pain...it does its job well..but it makes a person constipated...and if you're on it long enough, you'll go through withdrawl when its time to stop taking it.  (+ info)

How do I reduce dependence on friends?

I am very dependent on my friends. Especially my good friend Joanna. I need her to feel secure and comfortable. And when she has to go for some activities of her own during lunch, I feel like I'm not half as confident or comfortable. How do I reduce this weird dependence on my friends?
----------

Have activities of your own. Join a club or some other activity alone, so you can meet more friends. It is never good to be dependent on someone because stuff happens and you don't wanna be left alone.  (+ info)
