Does increasing the level of morphine for cancer patients inhibit ones internal organs to function?

Terminal cancer patients typically receive increased doses of morphine and other pain killers, especially prior to entirng a "hospice". I heard from a nurse that increasing the pain killers inhibits the internal organs from functioning.

When Morphine is given to someone with a terminal illness, does it speed up the dying process?

I have a loved one who has advanced esophageal cancer, the doctors say, all that's left to do now is to make her more comfortable. She is being given Morphine for the pain. Someone told me this makes the body shut down more quickly. Does anyone know if this is really true? I can't find that info in my online research of the drug! Please help if you are familiar with this situation, or if you have medical knowledge.
----------

morphine is just allowing comfort. The only way morphine would shut down the body is if the doctors increased the dosage to a toxic level. Doctors are not going to administer drugs to kill someone, it's against the law. Without the morphine your loved one would be in terrible agony. I'm enclosing a link where you can light a candle and say a prayer for your loved one.  (+ info)

Does morphine mask the symptoms of tumors in the spinal column, with memory& sensory?

Some people think my mom is healed, but we cannot tell because of the morphine she is taking, please help me, help my mom.
----------

morphine blocks the sensation of pain, and can cause euphoria..unrealistic feelings of elation. The only way to know if your mom is healed, is to take her to a doctor to check on those tumors.  (+ info)

How do I get rid of the terrible nausea/upset stomach from morphine?

I took a little bit of morphine yesterday and now i cant stop throwing up anything and everything. I feel so terrible. I heard that Medical Marijuana can do something for this. I can not talk to "my doctor." I need help. please and thank you.
ahaha. no. i was a dumb-dumb, and i snorted it, on an empty stomach.
----------

Medical marijuana will most likely make you more nauseous if morphine did that to you. Phenergan is you best bet, or if you can't get a prescription for it try dramamine, it's over the counter and should help.  (+ info)

Can you share your experience in how you dealt with someone taking morphine?

A friend of 9 years has been taking oral morphine for her pain from post-polio syndrome for maybe a year. She's aware of the addiction possibility so she's showing responsibility.
Her personality has changed to the point where it sends me over the deep end sometimes. My patience shreds. And of course she doesn't know how annoying she is. Any experiences?
I never really got to learn how to own myself I suppose when MY mother was taking her meds with vodka the color of a glass of water. So I felt good for about a year that I was able to not Freak when my friend started acting the same way. I had grown. I had not taken the bait. ....until now.
I think I need to tell her .... on one of her good days.
----------

my friends mom gets them from her doctors, who reluctantly gives it to her, and she got addicted to them, she began to give them to her 3 sons and 1 daughter. 2 of the sons themselves became junkies. one of them is pretty much screwed while the other suffered so much. the mom over dosed. and shes now in a coma for the last 2 months. The son is on crack and the other son made it:P  (+ info)

How much alcohol must be consumed and for how long to reach PHYSICAL dependence?

No one seems to be able to answer this. I am not talking about alcoholism, addiction, or psycological need, but PHYSICAL dependence, ie; measurable physical withdrawal upon stopping.
----------

This is a broad question with infinite answers. Every person is a different size, shape, color, weight, etc. For some it could be much less than others. Ones' weight would be the most significant factor in determining the amount, but even then it would be only one of the many contributing factors. There are many correct answers to this question, but there is no one answer that will render an absolute solution.

502 gallons in 5 months and 4 days. Sounds like an answer, but it's just shot in a large dark room of answers.  (+ info)

How much pain would require a 100mg morphine patch.?

93 yr old with advanced colon cancer has to wear a 100mg morphine patch for pain. She is in the 18th month of a time frame that was given of 6-18 months to live.
----------

she probably needs that much because she has built a tolerance to the effects of the morphine over the course of treatment. Her pain is likely no worse than it ever was, but the medication's ability to help is getting less and less so they must give her more and more to achieve relief.  (+ info)

can a probation drug test tell the difference between percocet and morphine?

i am prescibed to percocet and i am in alot of pain.. i ran out of my percs and a friend told me to take one of hers, she had a 30 mg of morphine. will they both show up as opiotes? or will morphine show up different?
if you do NOT know the answer for fact please dont say anything thank you..
----------

Hi,
Simple drug tests like the sort they may administer at work do not look for the actual drugs themselves but for their metabolites. So it will show up as "opioids". Only a full GC/MS test can determine exactly which opioid you've taken.  (+ info)

Is the pain caused by Crohn's disease and endometriosis enough to justify morphine daily?

This girl I know in her early 20's has morphine every day. We fear she is addicted. She always looks and sounds strung out, she doesn't work and is mentally unstable. It seems like overkill to me - I know there are things that can be done for endometriosis, but what about Crohn's? What do you think?
----------

hi, I am a crohn's pt. for 28 yrs. Some crohn's pt. are in severe pain almost daily because the newer treatments just don't work for them so they go under a doctor's care for pain management.

Before you judge this poor girl, she may be suffering w/abdominal pain, fatigue, bleeding, the big "D" or "C". You just don't know unless you've been in her shoes.

Check out the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation's site to educate yourself. There is also a live chat & hotline run by healthcare experts who can answer your questions as well as an open forum where you can post this question to others who have IBD (crohn's or ulcerative colitis).

Don't judge a book by its cover. I know many folks w/Crohn's who are on pain management medications because they are not able to take the newer treatments. Check out the CCFA site and EDUCATE YOURSELF. If things get worse for your friend, then yes, definitely step in and talk to her family into getting her help.

It's nice to know that some people actually care when a friend isn't well.  (+ info)
