Can Morphine be harmful to people with sleep apena?

Besides all the other problems my husband has had. He has sleep apnea the doctor had him on pain meds for his arm and shoulder like vicadine, morphine, ultrim. The dr. stopped giving him morphine after a year because it interfered with his sleep apnea if that was the case why did he give it to him in the first place and should they have weined him off of it.
I felt there has been something wrong I know morphine is a powerful drug. You take a person who has sleep apnea, sugar, stent in heart, constant in pain, high blood presure, The dr. told my husband hes a walking time bomb and it scares me. Everytime I try talking to the dr they blow me off I just dont know how to get there attention. Thanks for all the info.
----------

Morphine is a strong respiratory depressant. It will make sleep apnea worst. It can also dangerousely lower his oxygen levels. When morphine or any narcotics are given the person may not get the urge to wake up and start breathing again. Very dangerous combination. Patients with severe sleep apena can go on CPAP. This is a machine that gives you a breath automatically. It can be very annoying. But what choice do you have.  (+ info)

Is there a limit to the amount of pain morphine can take away ?

Evidence based or professionally given answers preferred but all answers welcome. If morphine cant take way all degree's of pain, is there such a painkiller that can take away any amount of pain ?
----------

Technically no there isn't. Provided the dose is increased gradually tolerance to the drug develops. I have seen terminally ill patients on huge doses running to thousands of mgs.  (+ info)

Is morphine the most powerful pain killer out there, or is it something else?

I've only had morphine once when regular pain killers wouldn't handle it as I was passing a kidney stone. And it was definately the most powerful pain killer I had ever experienced.

But morphine has been around a long time and does have it's draw backs. Has modern medicine come up with something better that does not carry as many risks?
----------

There are other medicines out there that are stronger than morphine but good luck getting your doctor to write you a prescription for them unless you have cancer. I had Demerol at the hospital while passing a kidney stone and it worked great. I have chronic back pain and have been taking pain killers on a daily basis for about 2 1/2 years. Nothing seemed to work. A pain management doctor finally put me on Oxymorphine which is supposed to be stronger than morphine. It works great. It was the first time in all those years that I was almost pain free. I had a nurse tell me one time about her husbands back pain due to a car wreck and had many surgeries but the pain was terrible. She asked what I was taking and she said her husband was taking that then they put him on Oxycontin then from there they put him on Methadone. So I would say that Methadone is stronger than morphine,
I read that Oxymorphone and Oxycontin were just a little different. Some said the Oxycotin worked better and others said the opposite. I watched a show on TV about Oxycontin and how people were shooting it up. That is why allot of people prefer Oxycontin over Oxymorphone. To sum it up...... I think Methadone is allot stronger than Morphine. I hope this helps.  (+ info)

Is there anything I should avoid before/after taking morphine or naltrexone?

Is it ok to eat chocolate or drink coffee after taking morphine or naltrexone? Or is there anything else I should avoid before/after dose?

Any other risks involved that you would like to mention?

Thanks!
----------

Are you taking a naltrexone pill and a morphine pill at the same time? Or are you taking the morphine/naltrexone combo pill? The purpose of naltrexone is to block the effects of opioid (ie, morphine). So, if you are taking the morphine, and then you take the naltrexone, its going to block the action of the morphine. There is a new medication out, a combination of morphine and a small amount of naltrexone, which works as a pain reliever, but it was just approved and I don't even think Its on the market yet. In either case, chocolate and coffee won't cause any adverse reactions if combined with either of those medications, so I don't think you need to be concerned about that. There are other things that don't go so well with morphine, the main one being alcohol, so yeah, don't wash down the morphine with a beer or something. And, of course, as with any medication, do not take it in an excessive dose.  (+ info)

I have been taking oxycodone 30 mg for breakthrough pain, I had it changed to morphine 30 mg, which is better?

I think I am feeling more tired with the morphine. I also started taking concerta 26 mg. Previously I was taking adderal, 10 mg for adult add. I have been sleeping more than usual, wondered what to change?
----------

The oxycodone is a faster for breakthrough pain and will relieve larger pain quicker but it is a little harder to stop taking, the morphine sulfate stays in your system longer and tens to have a lasting effect when most people seem to need the oxy more often i say which ever you use that relieves the pain and you have to take the least is the one i would use  (+ info)

how long does it take to get off prescription morphine?

I have been on prescribed morphine for over ten years. My doctor is retiring soon and I dont have health care or the money to go to a new doctor.Im trying to gradually stop taking it but the withdrawals scare me to death. How long does it take to go through these withdrawals?
----------

I dont envy you; I was on 190 mg of methadone every day for over 1 year and quit cold turkey. I wouldnt wish the withdrawal on anyone. At least you cant die from the withdrawal. Good luck. Oh, and by the way, you certainly wont feel like drinking alcohol or doing anything for that matter.  (+ info)

what are codeine and morphine and how are they related to heroin?

what are codeine and morphine and how are they related to heroin?
----------

codeine and morphine are pain medications prescribed by a doctor for pain management. morphine can cause respirations to slow down and can cause cold sweats, as well as other things...it is commonly used toward the end of someone's life to help them to rest comfortably, but it is also used for other pain management. codeine isn't quite as strong, but still needs to be prescribed by a doctor...not sure how they are related to heroin, except they may be from the same chemical family.  (+ info)

Shortly people will avoid the person due to the vice and they will end up only with other drug addicts as friends. Long term the vice will take over their lives so much that they will forget work, friends and family completely and end up alone.  (+ info)
