Is follicular thyroid cancer hereditary?

My grandma has it, and not only am I worried about her, but I am wondering if I have a higher risk of getting it, or if my mom has a higher risk. I understand that cancer is a mutation, but I also know that some cancers can be hereditary especially if they are autosomal dominant. Is follicular thyroid cancer hereditary or not?
----------

Follicular thyroid cancer is not hereditary, Medullary thyroid cancer is. There is a small possibility (5%) that one could get a HNMTC (hereditary non-medullary thyroid cancer) and if 3 or more first degree relatives have it, your chance of getting it is 94%. You would have to get screened to rule out everything. Hope this helps, good luck.  (+ info)

I had a pelvic ultrasound and it read "follicular changes in the ovaries" What does this mean?

I've been off the pill for five months and am trying to become pregnant, but no luck so far. I have always had irregular periods, so of course I'm now considering that I could have PCOS, but that pelvic ultrasound that showed "follicular changes to the ovaries" was done five years ago and I was told it was "normal" at the time w/ no further detailos provided. Yesterday I read the result when I requested a copy of my medical records.
----------

Nothing. Follicles are basically our "eggs" that will grow throughout the monthly menstral cycle. The follicles grow and release the egg upon ovulation. They can become cysts, which mean NOTHING. It is normal. As a physician, and a woman, DON'T Worry!
It is NOT cancer. It is not harmful. basically just radiological terms to describe our follicles as they enlarge throughout the menstral cycle.
Hope I helped!

What is a subcentimeter follicular-type cyst?

This doesn't have a simple answer. Follicular cysts of one type are typically associated with the ovaries and are not usually a big deal. BUT There are also follicular cysts of the dermis that are associated with hair follicles. AND there are follicular type cysts in the lymphatic system that are sometimes associated with granularity palpated in BSE. Your best bet here is to be sure you are reading and studying about the right type. You could either scare yourself to death or be too casual about a cyst that needs attention. Depend on a doctor you trust to make clear what you have and what the implications are.  (+ info)

what are multiple follicular cysts are they good or bad to have them?

AM ON MY 11th day of the cycle and expecting to ovulate soon. i went yesterday 4 ovary checks.the radiologists report was ;
normal sized empty uterus
both ovaries are well visualised and containes multiple follicular cysts of varying sizes.Thats my worry can somebody explain to me plizzzzzzi
----------

I don't think that follicular cysts are anything to worry about. They usually occur around ovulation and disappear on their own. Sometimes the doctor will prescribe birth control to help them reduce if they don't go away. I used to have what is called dermoid cysts. They were painful and I had to get surgery to get them removed. If you are really concerned about it... I think that you should talk to your doctor about it and see what they can do to help you get rid of them. In all honesty... I don't think that you have anything to worry about. Good luck.  (+ info)

Is it possible for me to be pregnant if I was in the follicular stage of ovulation......?

I had some tests ran that indicated I was in the follicular stage of ovulation on May 7th. I had unprotected sex that morning of the 7th and again, that night. Would there be any possibility of me getting pregant from that? Even if I wasn't in the luteal phase yet?
----------

Yes. You really can't conceive in the luteal phase. That's the phase AFTER ovulation. You want as much sperm as you can get waiting for that egg AT ovulation. Sperm can live for up to 5 days. So if you ovulated between the 7th and 11th, you've got a chance. Chances drop dramatically the day after ovulation, as your egg only lives for 12-24 hours if not fertilized.  (+ info)
