How can you tell the difference between muscle and fat?

How can differentiate between muscle and fat. Ex: a little bit of either fat or muscle on the inner thigh. Can you see the difference? Also, what exercises burn calories and fat without building muscle?
----------

Flex your leg muscles and pinch. If you can grab that extra little bit, then it's fat. If not, it's muscle. Cardiovascular exercise - running, biking, swimming, anything that gets your heart rate up - burns calories and fat. All exercise will build muscle, but cardio less so than targeted strength training.  (+ info)

How does muscle testing work to diagnose illness?

Hi, I visited a Naturopathic Doctor who used muscle testing to find why I'm having digestive issues, primarily no appetite and nausea. She said I need a parasitic cleanse which sounded strange to me. Can anyone with knowledge about this type of testing give me some details please? (By the way, I already visited my family doctor and GI doctor who gave tons of tests and found nothing, which is why I am trying this). But there is definitely something wrong. Thanks for responding.
----------

how it works is still something of a mystery. that it does work, when used by an experienced practitioner, is beyond question. a great many health problems which medical tests fail to detect can be found using muscle testing/applied kinesiology. anyone who says it doesn't work is simply ignorant and hasn't a clue what they're talking about.  (+ info)

What is the difference between muscle strength and muscle endurance?

what is the difference between muscle endurance and muscle strength? can you give me an example of it? how do you build muscle endurance and how do you build muscle strength?
----------

The names explain themselves.

Muscle strength, or strength, means that you can generate a great force/strength/power for a short moment, or for one lift. Sprinters, Olympic Weightlifters, Jumpers. They all require strength, as they aren't required to last very long, but to perform quickly and efficiently.

Muscle endurance. Being able to perform an strenuous activity for a longer duration of time.
To be able to generate and continue to hold a force for a certain duration of time.
Long distance runners, Rowers, Military, Soccer players. These all are required to generate power through a certain amount of time, and "endure" it.

It is true that a strong person won't have enough endurance to last as long, but an endurance athlete is nowhere near the strength of a strength/power athlete.
When it comes to lifts, though, the stronger person will probably have more reps than the more endurant person, but he wouldn't last in his endurance sport.

MMA and BJJ are two such sports. MMA require more of an endurance, while BJJ require strength to grapple your opponent and hold on to him and defend against his strength.  (+ info)

How fast would i gain muscle under these conditions?

I am 16. I read that you rebuild lost muscle much faster than building new muscle that you never had before. I lost a lot of muscle due to under eating on a diet while doing a lot of cardio. How fast should i rebuild the lost muscle if i start working out? Would it be realistic of me to gain (as a beginner) 3 pounds of muscle a month?
----------

the general term for this is muscle memory. When an active person repeatedly trains the outcome is to induce physiological changes which attain increased levels of accuracy through repetition. Even though the process is really brain-muscle memory or motor memory, the expression "muscle memory" is commonly used.

an estimate that meat heads tend to use is that we lose muscle at a third the rate we gain, so if we train for 3 years after 1 year we will be back to normal. To get big quick depends on your natural ability, your diet and the amount of and quality of effort you put in.
as a guide you will need to increase your calorie intake by about 50%, see how that goes and give your muscles time off to recover. 3lb muscle in one month is a bit optimistic and for every lb muscle gained you should expect to gain 2 or 3lb fat. Thats just the way the cooky crumbles im afraid, you can focus on losing the fat and getting ripped later, that will need another question.  (+ info)

What is causing my father muscle pains upon waking up in the morning?

My father complains of bad muscle pain when he wakes up in the morning. The muscles on the whole side of his body which he has been sleeping on ache. Everything else feels fine. They only start to hurt after he has woken up and starts to move around, not during the night.

What could be causing this, and what can be done? He is 55; does not smoke, is at a normal weight, and is in very good health (although we tell him he doesn't eat enough).
Again, only the side of his body which he has been sleeping on hurts.
----------

It may not be muscle pains. It may be caused by vascular pain, or it may be arthritis. It could also be a mattress that is too soft. No matter what, he should tell his doctor what is happening and when so he can be evaluated properly.  (+ info)

How do I lose some muscle and fat while exercising?

Some of my weight consists of the muscles i have built up over my younger years. Now that I am working out more than I used to, I would like to lose some muscle in my calves and legs; how can this be accomplished while also losing fat? Also, is doing the elliptical machine good enough?
My current weight loss program is obviously eating better but using the elliptical machine for thirty minutes two or three times a week.

What muscle provides the upward force in a push-up?

I know that push-ups use just about every muscle in the upper body at least a little bit, but I've been working out for a while now and I'm still having trouble doing a lot of push-ups. So my question is what muscle gives the upward force when you are pushing from the bottom up. I would like to know so i can independently train that muscle.

How severe is pulling a muscle in your neck?

I learned that I pulled a muscle in my neck and while my own pain has fluctuated from minimal to very severe, I wanted to know how bad pulling a muscle in your neck actually is? Should it be this painful or am I unknowingly overreacting? Does it vary significantly?

Thanks!
----------

A pulled muscle is painful, but it is impossible to know how bad yours is over the internet.

You might take a shower and let the warm water beat on that muscle. A nice layer of Tiger Balm all the way from your scalp to the base of your neck on both sides will help relax it. Take an otc pain tab like aspirin, Tylenol, or Ibuprofen.

Depending on what you were doing when the muscles were injured, you may need to go see a doctor for some powerful muscle relaxers or go to a chiropractor. Both will insist on x-rays to make sure you haven't damaged your vertebra. Insist on it before a chiropractor tries to adjust your spine if it isn't proposed. Better yet, find another chiropractor!

Try to hold your head still as much as possible. If you have a thin pillow or a towel folded lengthwise you can wrap around your neck to support your head like the cervical collar used for accident victims it will help immobilize your head. If you have no way to do that, you are going to have to consciously turn your entire upper body to see something to the side. Make sure your neck is well supported when you lie down.

If it is just a pulled/strained muscle you should be feeling better within a day or two. If it is whiplash of some sort, you need medical intervention.

How long does it take to build a 1lb of muscle?

I just started working out, I have kept my caloric intake the same amount as usual but I have shifted it to more protein. I am eating 1g of protein per pound of body weight. I was curious on how long does it take to gain muscle.

I weigh 150 lbs, I am 5'11''

And if I want to build muscle will I have to consume more calories than I am now or will I just need to eat more protein, since protein is the only macro molecule that is used in building muscle through via amino acids as building blocks. So it makes no sense to eat more carbs or fat than I am at the moment to build muscle.
----------

Muscle tissue consumes carbs for power. To make proteins from amino acids requires gobs of ATP, which must be made from carbs.  (+ info)
