What other abnormalities are associated with hemivertabra/congenital scoliosis?

My daughter was born in January 2006. In July of 2006 through a routine chest x-ray she was diagnosed with hemivertabra at T3 (vertabra not fully formed) and a missing rib. She saw the pediatric orthopeadic doctor 3 times. At 16 months she died of sepsis as a result of undiagnosed asplenia (absence of spleen). I am wondering if her doctor should have ordered other tests when the scoliosis was diagnosed.
----------

I'm so sorry to hear the news of your daughter.

I'm unaware of other conditions associated wtih congenital scoliosis. Not that there aren't any, but I've never heard of any in the groups that I read.

Take care.  (+ info)

What r different ways of detecting foetal abnormalities?

- What r d medical tech. to detect foetal abnormalities.
- Is it possible 2 detect foetal abnormalities by physical exam. of abdomen of a pregnant woman?
----------

Blood work is the first detection. there is always amnio, with risks. then CVS(chronic vila sampling) with a greater risk. Blood work can let you know the possibilities of some things, the other 2 let you know for sure. but you must weigh the pros and cons carefully. there is always ultrasound that a lot of times can detect physical abnormalities or something with the heart.  (+ info)

Have a great swiss mtn dog less than 3m having mult seizures per day spinal tap shows no abnormalities. ideas?

I have a great swiss mountain dog less than 3 months old, he is having multiple seizures per day for about a week. A spinal tap was recommended done and spinal fluid showed no abnormalities. As of right now the doctors and I have no idea what are causing the seizures. Any ideas?
----------

It could be just plain old epilepsy. Even in people, sometimes a cause isn't found.

Good luck.  (+ info)

Are most late term abortions done in cases of genetic abnormalities?

I never put two and two together, but I read that 90% of children with Down syndrome are aborted, and that means that the abortion would have to occur between 18-22 weeks, following the triple screen test, amnio, etc.

So are most late abortions done because of results of the triple screen test?
----------

No, a lot are done because women don't face the reality until then. With nuchal fold screening and 1st trimester screening much of the terminations for trisomy abnormalities (there are many types) can occur in the 1st trimester.  (+ info)

Can a sonogram that is used for amniocentesis detect abnormalities right there during the procedure?

I recently had an amniocentesis and I was wondering as the doctor and nurses were performing the sonogram and the procedure, would they have said something to me if they saw an abnormality? I understand the sonogram used for the amnio is much more powerful than the average sonogram that determines gender.
----------

When I had a sonogram that showed a problem, the technician told me immediately. Of course some problems cannot be seen and will only show from the results of the amniocentesis but hopefully, all will go well.  (+ info)

Who treats musculoskeletal pain more effectively, a chiropractor or an osteopath?

I get a lot of head, neck and shoulder pain and inflammation due to poor posture. Who could rectify this for me please? thanks
----------

Hello, I would certainly try an osteopathic physician first. Chiropractors can be good, but there is a lot of variation in the field (some are very good, some are very bad) and you never really know what you might end up with. I also suggest a DO for two other reasons, first if it requires more than maneual manipulation (osteopathic manipulative medicine: OMM) they can write you either a referral or also prescribe muscle relaxers to help (Chiropractors cannot). The second, and probably most important reason is that DO's practice OMM a little differently, many chiropractors focus on quick movements called High Velocity Low Amplitude to move bones back into place in an attempt to relieve muscle tensions and restore proper functioning and alignment to your body. This can work and is used by DO's but DO's also consider that the soft tissues (being the muscle and connective tissue that is inflammed) is actually the cause of the problem and will treat this as well. If the soft tissues are the problem and you simply align all the bones back into place, in a short time, the soft tissue will pull the bones back out of place and you are back to square one! DO's also have a safer track record while performing manipulations.

Hope this helps!  (+ info)

Are ST and TWave abnormalities significant in an ECG when diagnosing heart failure or disease?

My husband attended a hospital with intermittant chest pain. After an ECG that was borderline and showed the above abnormalities and a BP reading of 210/120. He was sent away with a diagnosis of digestive/gallstone problems but asked to visit his GP for BP checks. he died 5 days later from heart failure due to heart disease. Should the ECG, if done properly shown up more?

Are birth defects such as Autism linked to genetic abnormalities and age increasing likelihood?

I read something that stated as a women ages the chance increases, however, my thinking is that if the gene is not in the pyramid the age factor would not be as likely to come into play. Please prove answer with links to research done by professionals. Any related link/comment is welcome.
----------

Most autism is not a birth defect. The whole age thing is just one study that is not being considered important by most who are successfully reversing the symptoms of autism. Very few genetic abnormalities have been discovered in a small percentage of those with autism. I can not say the cause, only what is reversing symptoms: ridding pathogens and toxins. My children are recovered from autism. You can Google "abstract maternal age autism" or "abstract genetic autism" to find the studies you are looking for. But, to learn how to reverse autism symptoms, which does take quite a while, you will only get that answer from parents and doctors who have actually done it. How it is reversed is currently the closest clue as to how it develops.  (+ info)

what are 5 links between the musculoskeletal and respiratory systems?

class assignment i have found 4 links including th diaphragm and how you breath, the heart, muscles with gas exchange and vocal cords.
----------

first of all the hear is not part of the musculoskeletal system although it contains muscle tissue but it differs.

1-the diaphragm:the major muscle of breathing stop it from working and no breathing happens.

2-the vocal cords and the epiglottis which prevents food from entering the larynx and bronchi.

3-accessory muscles of breathing are neck muscles like sternomastoid and back muscles like the trapezius and intercostal muscles between the ribs. Those act as additional to the diaphragm during strenious breathing as in exercise.

4-activation of the musculoskeletal system as in exercise means our muscles will need more oxygen to work so the breathing increases.
5-the rib cage and its muscles keep the lungs in place if there was a fracture of few ribs the breathing would be difficult and can be fatal.

gas exchange has no relation it is a lung and blood matter.  (+ info)
