what is the difference between spinal block and epidural?

How do they do the spinal block i have never heard of that? I know everything about Epidural but what is the difference between them and which works better?
----------

There are several layers between your skin and the subarachnoid space (where your cerebrospinal fluid is).

The layers in order are skin > fascia > supraspinous ligament > interspinous ligament > ligamentum flavum > epidural space > dura > subarachnoid space.

When placing an epidural, the anesthetist places a catheter (thin plastic tubing) in the epidural space. This gives you a continuous infusion of local anesthetic that numbs up the part of your body that is covered. It can take 10 minutes or so for the epidural to start taking effect.

When doing a spinal, the anesthetist performs a single injection in the subarachnoid space. There is no catheter. The effect is immediate and the numbness can last for a few hours depending on the dose and concentration of the drug. In general this is used for surgical anesthesia (e.g c-section) but can also be used when the patient needs quick relief and she is about to deliver.

At many institutions including the baby factory known as Prentice Women's Hospital (Northwestern Memorial Hospital - Chicago), the anesthesiologists usually do a combined technique to get the immediate effects of the spinal and the continous infusion of the epidural.

How to move someone with a spinal chord injury?

I am doing a poroject in health and need to know if in a critical situation like fire or sinking how can you safely move someone with a spinal chord injury with minimal to no further damage. Also when is this legal?
----------

Well, I am not a doctor but once there I was racing this biker on my bike and he came off badly, he was pretty broken and not moving on the floor after hitting a lampost and I was there, big and strong and the lady nurse told me to carefully lift his left side by rolling his body to the right side and she pushed in a thin stretcher while his side came up, wedging the stretcher in between his back and the tarmac.
Then we carefully lowered him back and that was it.
There was no way to know if he had his spine damaged, I'd say there was a big chance considering the way he came off so I guess that was the procedure.
It was either that or leave him there.

I do know from doing a diver course that if someone has water in their lungs you put them on their side to get them to cough it out, so, combining this to the biker case I guess that's what you could do but in that case the stretcher was used in a way to keep his back straight, I wouldn't move someone without it or some sort of plank for the back to firmly rest on while doing the moving.  (+ info)

What is the medical term of spinal swelling?

Also, what r the sign & symptoms of spinal swelling? whats the medication & diagnosis? is there any link on the web? if a patient is suffering from blood infection also, what is the situation?
----------

I'm not sure what the medical term for spinal swelling is especially since there are so many different causes of it. Here are two websites that seem to have some good information:
http://www.wellsphere.com/wellpage/spine-swelling-symptoms
http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec06/ch093/ch093c.html
It seems corticosteroids can reduce swelling in or around the spinal cord but treatment also varies so much as it depends on the cause.
Can you be any more specific as far as any trauma you have had? If this doesn't help I hope someone else is able to post a more helpful answer. Good luck!  (+ info)

What gift is appropriate to give to my brother who has a spinal injury?

My brother has been in ICU with a C5 spinal injury for a month. I'm finally able to get to him across the country and am wondering what I can bring. I put audio books on his ipod and am thinking about making a dream catcher. Any other ideas?
----------

Your ideas are good as it can get very boring resting with a spinal injury,i have injured my spine in the past and needed surgery so was in hospital for a month, one answer says make him laugh yes good but laughing with a spinal injury really hurts,so be aware of that but cheer him up gently, but just seeing you will do that anyway he wont notice gifts so much just you,

i was given books in hospital and a box of chocolates, and you could film things from home on your cell phone if it has a camera, record messages from his friends that cant get there, they can even do something funny for you to film that will cheer him up no end!,

so hope he feels better soon, and your gift ideas are good and so thoughtfull, the thought behind it will mean more than the actual gift.  (+ info)

What are the best machines for spinal decompression?

I want to do the spinal decompression therapy but there are different machines and I don't know which one is the best. I already saw these 2: 3DactiveTRAC, DRX9000. And I asked what machines they have at 2 other locations so maybe I'll have other names of machines to choose from. And I know nothing about it.
----------

The only true spinal decompression machine that has the research, proof, success rates, and testimonials to prove it is the DRX9000.
The manufacturer is http://www.axiomworldwide.com   (+ info)

How long can I expect to be off the job for having a spinal fusion surgery?

I am a driver for UPS and on average life 35-40 pound packages but, I lift packages up to 150 pounds and I drive and walk about 10 hours everyday. How long can I expect to be off work from having spinal fusion surgery? Thanks for your help.
----------

It is not advisable that you return to a manual handling position after this surgery.
If you do , it is recommended that you do not lift, push pull any object weighing more than 5 to 10 kilos.
I was off work for 4 months , and had to return to "light duties"
4 years later , i have "re-injured " 3 times Please be very aware of your limits.  (+ info)

What does it mean if my head hurts really bad along with my spinal cord and lungs?

For the past night I have not been able to sleep, and it feels like something is moving in my brain/head. My lungs ache, my spinal cord aches, and I feel really dizzy. I have not been throwing up, but I have had diahrrea and I feel really weak. Is this worms? Brain tumor? Please help!
----------

It could be a chest infection because diarrhea and headache sound like flu like symptoms so if it hurts around your chest then that probably means that it's a chest infection. You need to go and see your doctor soon before it gets worse. Don't worry or panic because that will make things things worse and it can be treated easily any way. Hope everything's ok.

God bless!  (+ info)

What is the difference between epidural and spinal block? What are their specific indications?

I know the area where to administer epidural anesthesia (between the ligamentum flavum and the dura mater) as well as with the spinal block (in the subarachnoid space between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater). But I don't know if what are the scope of difference covered between the two when it comes to indications. Can you give light to my confusion? Thank you [",]
----------

The big difference is that epidural anesthesia is continuously delivered through an infusion pump through an indwelling epidural catheter whereas as spinal anesthesia is a one time dose of anesthesia injected using a spinal needle. Their placement areas are generally the same.  (+ info)
