What does it mean when you have acute myopia?

I was told that I have acute myopia. What does that actually mean and how can this affect me or cause problems.
----------

Acute myopia basically means very nearsighted (as in, can't see things far away very well). Someone with myopia would wear glasses or contact lenses as opposed to reading glasses (which are for farsighted people).

Contact lenses are actually better for people with acute myopia because the strain of the eyes trying to focus through glasses can make it worse; since contact lenses sit directly on the eyeball, it takes some of that strain off and prevents some further degeneration.  (+ info)

Is it true that as you grow older myopia disappears?

Some and said that as you grow older you tend to lose your near sight but if you have myopia what will happen is that you sight will get right and you will see far better, I am talking passing 50 years of age. Expert answers please. Thanks so much.
----------

Passing 50 years people experience trouble seeing near so in a way it makes sense. A correction could occur but the best thing is to one a person who is older than 50 and had myopia and see what happened to their vision and do it with many people to proof or disprove your hypotesis.  (+ info)

Can the use of medical marijuana be used to treat high myopia and astigmatism?

I am 20 years old and have had high myopia and astigmatism my entire life. Recently I have started to use marijuana recreationally but it seems to better my vision at distances and I heard it can relieve pressures of the eye, which I happen to have a ridiculous amount of pressure in my eye with extensive stress on my retna. I would like to know if Medical Marijuana would be a legitimate way for me to go about treating my vision problems.
----------

I've heard of many people, one man in particular with glaucoma, use cannabis to relieve eye problems.

I would definitely talk to a doctor. If it's actually helping you, use it. But just talk...  (+ info)

Does laser operation work for severe myopia?

A child of 5 yrs is severely myopic, and wears glasses of 10.5,11 power for the last six months. It was diagnosed that her eyeball size is larger than normal. Doctors say that once she is 18+, she can go in for corrective surgery.Till then , her myopia is going to get more severe with each passing year.Nothing we can do in terms of diet and exercise can help her .
Has anyone with similar symptoms got surgery done and benefitted? Also, is there anything I can do now to improve her vision and ensure that the number does not increase every year? .
----------

There's very little special you should be doing. This sort of myopia is essentially genetic in origin.

She should be encouraged to keep as long a working distance for closework as is feasible, rather than jam her nose right into picturebooks and computer screens and the TV. And to take breaks from closework, to re-establish distance focus.
But that's good advice for *all* children.

Other things will depend on her eyes:
You can enquire concerning at what age her doctor considers contact lenses will be a possibility.
And whether, if the Rx rises steadily (which is, I'm afraid the likely thing), using older, weaker, glasses for closework might be a useful policy.

When the eyes have finished growing, she is likely to be outside the range for laser refractive surgery, at least with currrent techniques, but there are other options including
"Insertable contact lenses" (Anterior chamber implants) to deal with refractive errors with high numbers.

What are the treatment options for degenerative disk disease in adolescents?

MRI showed degenerative disk disease in 16 year old, and an EMG showed a pinched nerve in the c8
----------

Often, DDD can be successfully treated without surgery. Physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, chiropractic treatments, or spinal injections often provide adequate relief of these troubling symptoms. Surgery may be recommended if the conservative treatment options do not provide relief within 2 to 3 months. If leg or back pain limits normal activity, if there is weakness or numbness in the legs, if it is difficult to walk or stand, or if medication or physical therapy are ineffective, surgery may be necessary, most often spinal fusion.

Osteopathic treatment treats various aspects of the degenerative process returning the back to optimal functioning. The treatment involves gentle stretches and manipulation to the facet joints of the spine. Relaxation techniques to the resultant muscle spasm. The osteopath will not just treat the degenerate area but treat the whole spine.

The overall goal of treatment is to :

-make you comfortable as quickly as possible
-design a spine-care program to reduce further degeneration
-get you back to normal activity in a timely manner  (+ info)
