FAQ - Neoplasms, Nerve Tissue

What is the basis of differing actions of antineoplastic agents on different tissue/neoplasms?

What is the basis for differing tissue- and neoplasm-specificites of antieoplastic chemotherapeutic agents? This doubt arose because considering what the pharmacokinetics of these drugs are it remains to be answered as to why a certain agent would act only in a particular tissue or neoplasm when the mechanisms they employ are so similar, e.g., various alkylating agents in spite having same action act of different tumors with differing degrees of effectiveness. Hope someone answers the question specifically. Useful links to free-text articles would also be highly appreciated. Bye. TC.

Is the brain tumor more likely to have developed from nerve tissue or from neuroglia? Why?

A brain tumor is found in a CT scan of Mr. Childs's head. The physician is assuming that it is not a secondary tumor (i.e., it did not spread from another part of the body) because an exhausive workup has revealed no signs of cancer elsewhere in Mr. Childs's body. Is the brain tumor more likely to have developed from nerve tissue or from neuroglia? Why?
----------

The definition of neuraglia is "intense or aching pain that occurs along the course or distribution of a peripheral or cranial nerve" so I tend to think it developed from the cranial nerve tissue itself not from neuraglia.

I assume they know the tumor is malignant, and if it is, it is considered "in situ" meaning the tumor is still in its original spot and has not broken out of its epithelial (outer) wall. Depending on the location of the tumor, that could be good news. Radiation and chemotherapy could very well treat it or perhaps even removal (depending on location).

I wish Mr. Childs the best of luck!  (+ info)

In Spina Bifida, what happens to the nerve tissue?

Well I read somewhere that said that there is no cure for Spina Bifida because nerve tissue that is damaged or lost can't be replaced. But what exactly happens? Like what causes that to happen?
----------

It is exposed or damaged, therefore, killing it.  (+ info)

cures please for chronic nerve pain caused by back surgery scar tissue pressing on the nerves.l4,l5,l5,s1?

I had a car accident 30+ years ago leaving me with a severe whip lash injury. Having now had 4 major operations I suffer chronic nerve pain. I take 15+ tablets a day to help cope with the pain including dihydrocodiene, gabapentin neurontin, celebrex. I would be grateful for anyone who has had or knows of someone with similar conditions. Please advice on how you/they are coping with the pain and problems. Alternative remedies/solutions considered.
----------

I have a cervical spine injury from a car accident and I have had 2 operations for it. It sounds like you are taking about the same meds I am except I think I may take a few more pain meds daily. I take hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine sulphate, Soma, Neurontin, Elavil daily. The newest change in my meds was to take 2 a day 20mg. oxycodone XR. It has really helped with being able to stay asleep for more that an hour or two at a time like I had been doing for about the last 5 years.

I have been in a pain management program for several years after spending years in pain and being miserable. The pain management program has really helped me try to deal with chronic pain on a daily basis.

One of things that has helped me obtain relief is keeping a daily journal of my pain. Nothing fancy, I use a notebook. I record when I hurt, where I hurt, how badly I hurt, and how it effects what I can and cannot do. I take it with me to the doctor every time I go so they know exactly what I am going through plus I can't remember everything I want then to know in just a few minutes in the office.

Here are a few links I think will help you. They are ones I use often.

Is a primary tumor in the brain more likely to develope from nerve tissue or from neuroglia and why?

The central nervous system has four types of neuroglia: (1) ependymal cells, (2) astrocytes, (3) oligodendrocytes, and (4) microglia.

Now my tumor was a mix of 2 and 3.  (+ info)

Would a brain tumor that was assumed to not be a secondary tumor develop from nerve tissue or neuroglia?

Why would this be?
----------

If a brain tumour is not secondary (metastasis & they spread) but is a Primary tumour it will develope only from brain cells.  (+ info)
