How many veterans are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder?

If the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq continue to escalate, what are the projected number of service members are to have PTSD in the next three to five years?
----------

Used to work for VA and they are already astronomical! They pretty much assume you have PTSD if you have a combat badge or can prove you experienced or were engaged in combat. A soldier can still get PTSD with the VA even if they do not have a combat badge etc. if the medical records show they were having symptoms during and after service. So pretty much all Afghanistan and Iraq vets file for PTSD with the VA.
Now there are a lot of PTSD cases that are not reported to the VA because the individual does not file. So the statistics may not be accurate that the VA has on PTSD especially related to Iraq and Afghanistan. Projected.....who knows but it's already to an astronomical number. Were finally realizing what PTSD is and it was around during WW1 and 2, Korea, and Vietnam (especially) but we didnt have a name for it and little research. If we had done that research for those wars it would be just as bad if not worse than Afghanistan/Iraq.  (+ info)

Can Post traumatic stress disorder be caused by living with a addict?

Let's say the person finally moved out and supposivily got clean.

But do you think living with that type of person could cause pts?
----------

You have raised a very good point here and I would have to agree that it could cause PTSD. Living with any kind of active addict takes its toll on us emotionally and mentally. We dance around the addict, begin to behave in a way that even we don't like anymore, and are exhausted at the end of each day. Living with someone who is not fully living in reality is not normal or healthy living. The addict affects every life they come into contact with, so living with one can certainly leave one traumatized and searching very hard to figure out what their own reality is. I would suggest talking with a counsellor. Take care  (+ info)

What is the leading treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

What is the leading prescription?
I am NOT asking what is the BEST treatment, I am asking (statistically) what is the MOST COMMON treatment and prescription!

The reason being, I know these Iraq war veterans are going to be coming home soon, all screwed up in the head, so I wanted to exploit that fact, and buy stock in what ever pharmaceutical company makes medicine to treat them.

What are symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

I read the entire entry in Wikipedia, but it seems kind of vague. I just don't get what exactly it is. I know it makes someone feel uncomfortable feelings about a past event but how exactly do they respond? Is it the same as depression? Why does it say they feel nothing and are expressionless whereas for depression it says they feel sad?
----------

Symptoms of intrusive memories may include:

Flashbacks, or reliving the traumatic event for minutes or even days at a time
Upsetting dreams about the traumatic event
Symptoms of avoidance and emotional numbing may include:

Trying to avoid thinking or talking about the traumatic event
Feeling emotionally numb
Avoiding activities you once enjoyed
Hopelessness about the future
Memory problems
Trouble concentrating
Difficulty maintaining close relationships
Symptoms of anxiety and increased emotional arousal may include:

Irritability or anger
Overwhelming guilt or shame
Self-destructive behavior, such as drinking too much

Hearing or seeing things that aren't there  (+ info)

How is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) shown by the character Robert Neville in the novel, "I am Legend?

I have to research topic that relates to the novel I am Legend. I chose to do PTSD as a topic. I am focusing on the main character Robert Neville because that is who I believe experienced a traumatic event that led to the development of PTSD.

I was just wondering what you people thought :)
-symptoms?
-signs of ptsd?

Ect;
----------

A person develops Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome when a traumatic or tragic event took place in their life. The words "post traumatic" basically means something that occurred AFTER a traumatic situation. In the novel, "I am Legend", Robert Neville does show signs of P.T.S.D. He always had recurring flashbacks of his child & wife's death. The image/memory replayed itself over and over again in his head, and he could not help it. Also, the drastic change in the human population over a short period of time could have caused him to develop symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

When my Grandfather returned from the Vietnam War, he had severe symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. He still shows signs today. I am a sophomore in High School and I had to do a research paper on P.T.S.D. Robert Neville would be a great connection example used for a research paper. Good topic. ;)  (+ info)

Is it possible to develop anxiety, or post traumatic stress disorder from a bad trip or a panic track on drugs?

I suffer from anxiety, disturbing thoughts, derealization, depersonlization, depression, and constant worrying. I avoid thinking or talking about about the experience at all costs, and I have a bunch of physical symptoms and insomnia.

Can hypnotherapy be treated for post traumatic stress disorders or obsession compulsive disorder?

John, why isn't it recommended if it can help?
----------

Well, yes it can help but is it recommended? No.

PTSD and other mental disorders/conditions, are treated by Hypnotherapy.

There is a technique in hypnotherapy called Past Regression and this MAY help release any feelings or emotions regarding what may of happened in the past. A Psychiatrist may be your best bet depending on how severe.

What hypnotherapy does is go into your mind and with your permission re-programs how you think about certain things. Its most commonly used to quit smoking, lose weight, overcome fears/phobias, etc.

Hope this helps you!  (+ info)
